A couple points to note.... When using the fragrance oils....its best to use no more than 3% (oil weight) (make sure you look at the IFRA data) lower then 3% and the fragrance will be very light. Keep you lye water and your oils within 10-15 degrees of each other....your oils will work best at 160-170 degrees....when the lye gets too cool and you add it to the hotter oils, it has a faster chance of "curdling" (kind of like seizing up) You can use Aloe Vera Juice in place of the water at the same amount....30-35% aloe water is ideal. Some KOH lye (potassium hydroxide) is less than 90% purity. If your KOH isnt 90% it will affect the outcome of your soap. Clays....doesn't matter if if its kaolin or bentonite or french....dont use it! Clays dull a shave razor and also makes the razor build up under the blades faster..especially with multi-blade disposal razors. Key oils and fats to use are those that have a high stearic SAP value. Key fats to use are tallow, lard, shea, mango butter, cocoa butter, and palm. The higher the stearic value the better the lather. Superfat...be careful with this....dont go to high on the SF (at most 5% is best) the higher you go, the softer the soap is. You WANT a semi firm soap...not as hard as a bar soap, but you dont want a soft soap that you can push your finger into easily....the softer it is, the less lather it is. Shave mugs/bowls.....these are designed to fit a shave puck...there are many commercial makers that make these pucks...porasso, williams, clubman, and others. Those pucks are anywhere from 3/4 to 1 inch thick. They are made to set down inside the shave bowl/cup so that the brush has room to build the lather....if you are going to prefill a shave bowl....fill it up half way....3-4 oz is pretty close to half way mark on most shave bowls. I also developed and formulated a shave soap ( I actually have two types...one is vegan and the other is animal fat based) The pucks I make are made in a PVC pipe and I also prefill shave cups too. A few fragrance oils to consider...Depending on who you buy from For the masculine side Mahogany Teakwood....manly, musky, bold Black Sea...Fresh and light Shave and a haircut...old fashioned barbershop smell Sandalwood....earthy and bold but not over powered Bergamot Waters....fresh and light Noir....this is a BBW fragrance....(top notes..{Coriander, rosemary, sage, bergamot}....middle...{Lavender, cardamom, orange flower} bottom..{Musk, vanilla, amber, woods, vetiver}) Enjoy!...Happy Soaping and Shaving!

Lovely lather. What percentage of glycerine did you add at end of cook? Did you do a water discount while making lye to compensate for added liquid at end of cook?
First of all, I love your videos!! 🥰 I do have a question for you regarding the addition of glycerin at the end of the cook. Did you do a water discount to add it or did you just add it at the end as extra water? I will say that I do the HTHP (High Temp Hot Process) all the time and I LOVE IT but you definitely have to research it really good due to using such high temps and of course the volcanos that could happen! 😁 Thanks so much!!
@@EllenRuthSoap I will be trying this with my ceramic bowls that are handmade!! I can't wait. Love all your videos truly. I just watched your video again, and in it you say you didn't water discount. Just wondering if this is a typo or if in fact you did water discount and said you didn't. If you did, by how much?
Hi, I’ve never made soap of any description before, but I’m keen to make my own shave soap. I have a few questions that maybe you or your viewers could provide input on. 1. Is is possible to make up the soap without scent and melt it at a later date to add scent? 2. If I were to use tallow, would I just replace some or all of the fat? 3. If I wanted to add menthol crystals, at what point in the process would be best for this? Thanks!

Not sure what I did wrong but mine went really thick and hard to stir after I poured the lye in with the oils (before the fragrance). I followed the directions. Measured carefully.
Yes, I did a water discount 😉
@@EllenRuthSoap Ok and thanks for you reply! I plan on making this in the next week or so! :)
Thanks!
Here are a few videos that may be of help, you'll need some good soap making basics: czcams.com/video/AqKxin0q1bM/video.html

Ellen, could you whip it for whipped soap?
I'm not sure, never thought of doing that...?
Hi ..thanks for the video
But I don't understand how did u calculate koh ..naoh..and water
??
There are several links in the description box that have great info on that.
It is okey to use metal insted of cristal (glass) for melt and lyes?
Stainless steel is okay, but nothing with aluminum..
Not sure what I did wrong but mine went really thick and hard to stir after I poured the lye in with the oils (before the fragrance). I followed the directions. Measured carefully. I'm a CP gal so maybe I need to try again. How do you melt your oils/steric acid? Microwave or double boiler method? I squished it into the molds. Let's see what happens!
I would recommend watching Holly’s video, and Amy Wardens.. they each have a different experience with it.
Hello, how does it make sure that it's ready or done for transferring to mold or cup? Is it when it's start to glossy? Thank you sharing
Yes, you can see it turn glossy and then it's ready.
Thanks for response. How about the hot process, does it need to cure for 1 month too?
Hi Ellen, would bentonite clay work here to add? I need to use mine and wonder whether you would recommend. Looks beautiful!
You could add a couple of Tbls to this and it would be great! I would pre-blend with the oils to make sure it's blended well.
@@EllenRuthSoap Thanks Ellen!
Hello, love your videos. Would this work without the glycerin?
I haven't tried it without, so I'm not sure??
Thank you so much for the reply. I'm allergic to soy I can't use glycerin 😢 maybe I'll try a small batch without and just see what happens lol😂
Welcome. I always like to follow you. I love your work very much. Your friend is from Egypt. What is the name of the thing that you put in the water in the beginning? Thank you very much.❤️
I think you're talking about the tussah silk fibers? They melt in hot lye solution and make the lather very silky
@@EllenRuthSoap Yes, it's the first time I've seen it
Great, thank your sharing your recipe.! May I ask the water amounts you have used to make the lye solutions? Not sure if I missed it?
Water is approx 2.5 x the lye amount, or 28% lye solution.
@@EllenRuthSoap thank you so much!
Hi Ellen. How much sandalwood fragrance was used in this recipe?
I typically use 5% unless the recommended amount is less than that..
Do You have a link for te mugs? Love your work!!! Awsome soap!! Thnxxx
Yes, they are in my amazon store link, in the description box
Did you got the mug I couldn’t find the link?
@@MariaRodriguez-rh8rj it's in the Amazon link under soap molds & accessories
@@EllenRuthSoap thank you I will look for them
