  • This 1 hour 48 minute video was a recorded as an online studio visit and conversation about nettles for textiles in early July 2020.
Allan (UK) and Sharon (Canada) follow each others work online and this is the first time the two have a chance to talk with each other 'in person'.
Listen to the conversation and show and tell that unfolds.
Allan shows progress on the current Nettle Cape Project, using nettles sent from places near and far his UK home base and some of his weaving with nettles projects. Sharon shows her local nettle knit undershirt and the braided vest project in progress at the time. Both are processing fibres while they talk- and this is the best way to watch and listen to this recording!

Three years latter, here I am, sitting in my room, crocheing, wathching and listening you two wonderful people and creators talking about three magical sisters :). Your conversation had a relaxed effect on my body and mind, I enjoyed so much. Thank you for sharing this dear Sharon! I took my first steps on nettles for textiles journey this year in Serbia, where I live, and I'm so excided to learn and create from all of you. This fall, Allan is coming to Croatia and that's such an amaizing moment for us here in Balkans. Whishing you all the best and looking forward to seeing you creating! P.S. I recognized few common things - I was, since my studis, and remain curious about every single step in this process - textile and how it's made, textile manipulatins, design, tailoring, sewing, crocheing and so on.

Loved this! Thank you for posting. Lots of interesting titbits. Loved your jacket and the very organic way you approached the making/design.

As a knitter, I rarely to never sell my work. It can't be sold at a price that respects the hours and skill required. I think the only items which I have charged for have been some quick baby booties.

Some folks will pay. Never hurts to try. Some folks don't like sterile items like you get when a factory pumps out millions of the same identical thing.

Just finding this 3 years into my Nettle adventure, since joining the FB group. I love what you both said about how we need to slow down our production of textiles and food, and bring our work back to the discovery stage while we are living in this fast, fast, fast world . I've been working in hand processed textile production for about 17 years now, mostly with wool, but I also do flax, silk, hemp and alpaca fibres and whenever I demo my skills in public, people usually remark they are so amazed that I have so much patience to do this work. The thing is, it gives me patience, it slows me down and keeps me in the moment. It helps to quiet my busy mind.

Yes!! The plants and process do teach us patience don't they? And quieting a busy mind is an excellent way to frame the joy this work brings as well...

Storage of my retted flax has not changed the quality of the final fiber.

Sharon, Im looking at the partial shirt and it looks like you spun singles and just knitted the singles by the way the fabric looks. Am I correct in that? Im still on the hunt for Nettle and Milkweed in my area. I know it grows here but just can't find it. Time to do a heavy search by the riverside to see what I can find. I so much want to do nettle vs flax. Flax is nice but I'd rather get even more primitive that that.

good eye, you are correct! the shorter tow fibre was spun and knit- my longer fibres were spun on the fold, plied and used as the warp for weaving the nettle jacket

interestingly I saif to my husband that nettle would make good armor against low power ballitics, when watchig one of your videos about the jacket you made.

Lol, yes, the braided green nettles cloth feel like it could be armor and stop blunt, slower moving arrows😉
