I really feel like the average NBA fan drastically underestimates what an exploitable weakness having a bad coach in the playoffs is. In the regular season the Celtics were a well-rounded team of professionals and they won a ton of games. In the playoffs you have to see the same team night after night and your opponent will take away all the easy stuff, all the stuff you like to do, they will pick apart your weaknesses like a bad scab and if you can't adjust as fast as your opponent you're constantly running uphill. I think the real pressure on the team is underdiscussed - Tatum spent two days hearing about how he wasnt scoring enough points, and so Mazzulla had to placate him, bc despite every one of JT's teammates coming out and basically telling the media to f-off (which was correct of them to do, bc the Boston media pool is ridiculous), Tatum really only cares about impressing the ESPN crew and the Boston sports media, who do not watch basketball. So, like every Tatum Placation Game, they scrap the unbelievably tested formula of letting Brown cook in the first quarter, with Tatum stepping off at 6 minutes, then coming out to start the second ready to take over, and instead Tatum forces a bunch of stuff - doesnt matter what, drives, threes, turnarounds, whatever. The issue is that the offense never gets started. So they dont really figure out what the cavs are doing, bc the C's arent doing anything familiar - does that make sense? They cant read the defense, bc they arent running plays, it's just Tatum forcing stuff, and then everyone else panicking and trying to pick up the pieces. Then they get behind, and bc the Cavs borrowed some of Miami's intentional mismatches, which made driving the far easier option, the C's end the half having shot a ridiculous number of 2's for themselves. Then the coaching staff, which loves math, decides they need to force more threes, bc that's an important metric. So all those god awful pick and rolls collapse, bc everyone on both teams knows that rolling isnt a real option, so they just...dont cover it, bc the C's arent running it (this is sort of like in the first half, how no one covered the Tatum PnRs, bc no one actually thought Tatum wouldnt shoot). And then it's jacking garbage contested shots until the Cavs' lead is sufficiently insurmountable that they can sit the starters. This describes, like, most of the Celtics' losses this year. Tatum decides he needs to meet the expectations of everyone except the people in the organization, and so they blow a game to pieces, and then they go back to what actually works til the pressure builds up again, and they have to do it again. I've literally never seen a more talented player less capable of taking a game over - and to make matters worse, bc he IS there, and emotional, Brown isnt allowed to try, either. Jaylen Brown, the Celtics' leading playoff scorer, attempted two shots in the third quarter!, which they started tied, and ended down 12, while White and Horford went 1 for 9. And when he was back in the offense, they had him doing the one thing he doesnt do well, which is jacking threes. Tatum wants to be Kobe, and what he actually is is the super evolved form of Draymond Green, and if he played that way they'd be literally unstoppable.
Agreed. JT heard the media and screwed their mojo. He isnt an alpha scorer. He never will be. He is indeed a better draymond green. The sooner he accepts it, the better. His job is to facilitate, score opportunistically, rebound and play defense..nothing wrong with that because the celtics blowout teams when he does that. The best version of these celtics is when white is their primary scorer. He is the steph curry of this team. Steph didnt take less shots than draymond. When JT goes to hunting shots, the celtics lose. Its best when he scores organically within the offense: catch and shoots, secondary drives, quick postups and cuts.
