I am a black woman. During the 60s, 70s and 80s I listened to all types of music. Music don't sound this way anymore, This is music not what I'm hearing today.
You are sooo right! Real instruments, real voices, melodic lines and beautiful lyrics, some funny, and the harmonies. I'm a white guy "not that there's anything wrong with that" [from Seinfeld hahahha] , and grew up in Michigan with everything from Motown, to Beatles, and beyond. Became a music teacher. Something I never knew until mid life, Stevie Wonder went to the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing Michigan with my late cousin....a brush with greatness "I missed it by that much" [Remember "Get Smart?" lol]. i hate computer sounds and auto tune crap.
Well said!
I'm a white woman who listened to the same types of music during the same years. And I totally agree with everything you said.
I'm in my 60s and I would say that finding good music from the current era takes a lot more effort - it is lost in the huge pool of bad music out there. A couple of examples of current music I think is good would be the singer LP singing "Lost on You" or Veta Gran Fleet singing "Heat Above".
Peter cetera teamed up with Amy Grant for a while. That may be the duet you're thinking of.
This is indeed the unmistakable voice of Peter Cetera.
With "If You Leave Me Now", a song written and sung by Cetera on the group's tenth album, Chicago garnered its first Grammy Award.[6][7] It was also the group's first number one single.[8][9]....cited from Wikipedia
Yes they definitely need to get their ears checked how could they not recognize his voice
That shit made me laugh so hard
@@rcherry1978 I wondered if I'd misunderstood them. I thought surely I had, how could they not recognize his voice?
Butter ….. the man’s voice is Fuckin butter
This indeed is Peter Cetera. You cannot mistake his very distinguished voice. Not only is he singing, this song was also soley written by him. It was released in 1976 and it is one of Chicago's biggest selling singles 😁
Came here to say this.
First #1 actually
He sounded different before he got his jaw broken
Chicago were never the same after Terry Kath went.
This is like 1976. So yes it’s Peter Cetera
I'm a white guy who's married to a African American woman since 1968...we listen and dance to all genres of music... music=happiness 😊
This is indeed Peter Cetera in the lead on this one. However, early Chicago had a rotation of three primary lead singers: Peter Cetera (bass), Robert Lamm (keyboards) and Terry Kath (lead guitar). Give a listen to "South California Purples." It's from their first album, and has a HEAVY psychedelic influence! Robert Lamm sings lead on that particular song. Terry Kath SHREDS on guitar..and don't forget..HORNS!! 💯❤👍
Totally agree👊🏻
Yes the horns. That was the biggest unfortunate change with the 80s power ballad Chicago. The horns were almost non-existent or an after thought. Producer David Foster basically took over and changed the group sound and deemphasized the horns.
Two of those horn players from the original Chicago Transit Authorty, James Pankow and Lee Loughnane still play with the band, along with Robert Lamm.
He's also the bass player. Some cool bass stuff in here.
Pankow is a DYNAMO!
Yes, that WAS Peter Cetera singing lead and harmony vocals. "If You Leave Me Now," was Chicago's first #1 hit around the world in 1976. This one song single handedly shifted Chicago from its big rock band sound, to the softer, rock ballads of the early 80s.
This song became such a popular seller, their record label pushed Chicago for more ballads. The radio stations back then held a HUGE influence in directing record sales. The more this song was played, the more the record buying public wanted Peter Cetera singing Chicago love ballads. This, coupled with the death of Chicago's rocking soul, co-lead singer/guitarist Terry Kath in 1977 and the popularity of MTV music videos in the early 80s featuring the face and voice of ballad singer Peter Cetera, Chicago's "rock band with horns" reputation and sound died. Peter then left for his solo career and Chicago's sound died with it. The "original" Chicago sound ONLY lives on their early albums (1969 - 1975).
If you want that BIG BRASS SOUND of Chicago you both fell in love with, do a deep dive into these older albums, Chicago Transit Authority (1969 - their first) through Chicago VIII (their eighth in 1975), most are double albums. Try these songs for that sound - "Movie' In," "Lowdown," "Now That You're Gone," "I'm A Man," "Just You 'n' Me." "What's This World Coming to," "Call On Me" and "Beginnings," ALL feature Chicago's horns and their true musicality.
Saturday in the Park
@@sourisvoleur4854, they've already reacted to it.
I’m a Man was first made a hit by Spencer Davis Group singer Stevie Winwood!
@@mitchridder4071 Okay thanks!
I think the broke the clutch.
Not only is Peter singing he wrote the song. This one is a childhood favorite.
In my opinion the best Chicago song you haven't listened to yet is Color My World. It's not just their best love song, but it's one of the best love songs ever written.
Terry Kath's bluesy vocals on that were phenomenal and such a switch from Peter or Bob. I love to sit down at the piano, play and sing it to my wife. Agree, one of the best love songs ever written.
I think everyone played, or tried to play, that song on the piano back in the day
@pjg58x - My band (me on keys) played it back in the day. It was a hit for slow dancing and I loved playing the flute solo on a Moog synth with one hand and the piano with the other. Always a couple pleaser.
@@pjg58x I did. LOL.
I agree 1000 %. "Colour My World" is a masterpiece and my favorite Chicago song.
Chicago's 22nd charting single and first #1 record on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1976. Also won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Group.
Chicago was so cool! They had planned a major concert at our Civic Center that night! During the day they gave a free concert in the city park! So cool…. they rock it!💕
I remember being shocked this was their first #1.
I just love the French horns in this song; they add so much to an incredible piece of music.
Their first #1 hit from 1976
One of my favorite Chicago songs. Peter Cetera and his unmistakable vocals will always live on.
This really was a transition song for Chicago, from the Jazz Rock fusion sound they began with to the power ballad powerhouse they became. ✌️
Although this song was a little different than the rest of their 70s material it still felt like Chicago to me.
The power ballad Chicago of the 80s just never felt right. Yes that’s what helped them survive the changing times and yes there were some nice songs but they were the same type of songs that a lot of others were doing at the time. Chicago lost their uniqueness in the 80s. Also a lot of the songs were from outside writers.
@@pjg58x Chicago 80s songs are top. But only 3 or 4 of them.
David Foster wrote most of their 80s power ballads. He basically wrote out all the horns.
The beginning of the Cetera years. I prefer the early stuff myself.
@@pjg58x Right words.
The farther you go back with Chicago, the more rockin' they get. "I'm A Man", "25 or 6 to 4", "Make Me Smile", "Questions 67 and 68", "Beginnings", "Feeling Stronger Every Day", "Saturday in the Park", "Old Days", "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is", "Free", "Dialogue Parts 1 and 2"...these are the classic and essential Chicago set list songs and they play all of these still in their current concert tour.
"Lowdown" and "Scrapbook" also to add to that list.
They've def reacted to 25 or 6 to 4 and loved it
25 or 6 to 4 was about LSD 25...
One of the best songs ever made.. PERIOD!! ❤️❤️🔥
UHHKAAY !!!
70s Chicago @their BEST
Okurrths 😁
I was one of the fortunate ones dancing this song with a girl when released (I was
fifteen back in 76) and when people danced in couple.....magic...
Terry Kath was Chicago back in the day....the soulful voice and ripping guitar compositions....he was so good.
When I think of Chicago, that’s the era I love most… in the beginning
I couldn't agree more!
You can never go wrong with Chicago. And maybe I’ve missed it, but if not you HAVE to do “Hard Habit To Break.” It’s my all time favorite song of theirs.
Outrageously GOOD song!!!
My Favorite ❤❤❤
Oh yeah love that song.
Absolutely please do that one
You can post Terry Kath.
Chicago has never made a bad record.
This is indeed Peter Cetera! Maybe a little toned down, but that is what the song called for! This song is what my friends and I called our "break-up song." If a guy broke our hearts, we would listen and sing this song ❣️
Definitely Peter Cetera voice! Reminds me of the 80's, which was an Incredible time for music! So many bands back then, could make your heart just Melt!!!!! They don't make music like these bands did back then these days! Love that you guys cover them, Thank you!!!!❤
About as unmistakable a voice as there is. Got to cut them some slack though, they be listening to a lot of music in a short amount of time. I really like the live version of this song much better, the studio recording seems to mail it in.
This song came out in 1976.
@juliewiseman29 The 70's was an incredible time for music.
Their signature ballad, but my favourite is 'Wishing You Were Here'
Beach boys on background vocals .
'You're The Inspiration' is another ballad by Chicago
Great suggestion 🥰
“Will You Still Love Me?” Is my favorite love song by Chicago
@@acoronado2728 I believe that was the lead singer after Peter Cetera, he also sang on Look Away.
@@acoronado2728 Beautiful song 💖
That was my high school prom theme song. Has a special meaning when I hear it.
This was Chicago's biggest hit in the UK. Number one in 1976. And it is Peter Cetera on lead vocals. Much love from England 🏴
This was a smash hit for Chicago. A soft rock love song that continually aired on all the radio waves in the old days. Love that mellow sound. These guys had several hits. A groove, for sure. Thanks, guys. I always love to watch you discovering our music. Never gets old. I am still watching ya and digging it. Shoutout from your guy in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Peace and love. Bless you and yours. Go with God. See you on the next. Love ya. Later.
Chicago isn't same without Peter Cetera..this was his vocal..."Once in a lifetime",and I've been Searchin..were two of my favorite Chicago songs
It isn't the same, Chicago was far better before he helped ruin them.
Once in a Lifetime? What Chicago album is that song on??
Peter was a cancer in the band. The only member whose ego went out of control. They were happy when he left. Much prefer Robert Lamms vocals.
Like Earth Wind and Fire without Maurice White.
Just you & me is a great one too
Amber just melted into her "Amber Sway". Another Chicago ballad with a similar vibe that I know y'all will love is their song "Wishing You Were Here". What makes this beautiful song even more special is that the Beach Boys provided the harmonies on it.
No that is definitely Peter singing. His voice is so distinct, I'm surprised you don't recognize it right away. He also wrote this song like many of their other hits.
This is a prime example of how Peter Cetera moved the band from its roots as a rock/jazz fusion band to what Peter wanted, to make ballads that would show off his voice. Many in the band did not like the direction the band was moving (the horn guys). You can mark the history of Chicago from with Terry Katz and without Terry, he was the soul of the band.
Agree, but dig the lushness of this arrangement, with percussion, horns and strings, plus heart tugging lyrics
By the time the 80s came around, people's taste in music had changed and the early Chicago stuff was not working much anymore. Their lead writer, Lamm, hadn't written anything substantial since '76 or so. They had to change with the times or not survive.
Terry Kath.
Peter Cetera was the lead vocalist. This was Chicago's straight up ballad. It was also was their first #1 single on the billboard hot 100
Peter Cetera has one of the most unique voices out there. He's unmistakable.
It's not before or after Cetera, it's him singing, Lol.
They had several more ballads before this song.
French horns by Gene Hyde and George Sherry, acoustic guitar was not Terry Kath but actually producer James William Guercio according to Wikipedia.
For me this was the Chicago song, when I was 7 years old it seemed to be No1 everywhere and you couldn't; turn on the TV or radio without hearing it. Great days. You may not wish to review it again, but watch Peter Cetera perform this live in Sau Paulo, in his sixties, with audience participation his voice still incredible.
Some singers stand the test of time, he's definitely one.
Chicago we’re on fire during this period. What a band 🫶
Lovely song from 1976. Love these old dreamy 70s songs sad and soothing.
Jay/Amber, you'll LOVE their "Beginnings" and "Just You n' Me"!!!!
edit- Terry Kath was the best voice of Chicago!!! edit- I meant Robert Lamm. Terry had the killer guitar.
and lead guitarist!
@@bertisjordan1085 I messed up, Robert Lamm has best voice. Terry Kath was a GREAT guitarist.
Terry Kath had a beautiful baritone, and was actually my fave singer of the three
I LOVE Beginnings!! It's a perfect love song!!
Kath was amazing for the band, but vocally, Lamm was the best of the bunch.
I put this on a burned CD when I was maybe 15 and we listened to the mix driving up to my friend's grandma's lakehouse. She was driving and when this song came on she gasped and said she hadn't heard it in years and got tears in her eyes. Still think of her everytime I listen to it.
“Color My World”… a personal fav of Chicago
I've been waiting for this one. It's my favorite Chicago song. I was 4 years old, and I remember loving this when it was a hit. It was their first #1 hit, which was 1976. The strings at the end are so memorable. They bring me right back to a simpler time... before school. You just heard Chicago's BEST!!!
I have the same exact sentiment from the same exact age.
Same here. My absolute favorite Chicago song.
The same with me. Every time I hear this song it reminds me of being driven to school while listening to this song on the school bus. This and Dreams by Fleetwood Mac.
My favorite too
You remember this song when you were 4? Lmao 🤣
I love this band Chicago. You can always tell one of their songs because of their signature horn section. But fun fact when they formed in 1967 they were called "Chicago Transit Authority" Then in 68 or 69 something like that. They changed it to just Chicago
I think, like Grand Funk Railroad, they were made to change their name due to conflict or confusion with real transit company.
@jrox6091
Yes, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) which ran the metro trains threatened suit. On top of that I've read the long name gave them billing problems on venue marquees. On one they were billed as Chicago Transients, lol. Thus, they decided to just go with Chicago which is where they all met and went to college together anyway.
@@kbrewski1 yep, that's true 👍🏽
Every single time I hear this, it's the summer of '76. My sister and I were on the living room floor, looking at the the CHICAGO X album cover. I read Cetera's name as lead on this song. I told my other sister about the name and she named my first niece after him that July.
Kinda surprised you didn't recognize his voice. It's most distinctive. 🥰
One of their best, and their biggest hit
“JUST You And Me!”
By Chicago is great!!
Horns and beautiful lyrics!!💕
Yes@susanliltz, I've been advocating for this song for ages!! So lovely, often overlooked. 💜💜
Yes!!
They also haven't reacted to Wishin You Were Here (with the Beach Boys singing harmony vocals), I've Been Searchin So Long, Call on Me (all from VII), Old Days, Questions 67+68, Lowdown, Dialogue, all iconic.
Beginnings and Call in Me are 2 of my favs.
That is undeniably Peter Cetera’s voice! Don’t know why they showed pictures of the band post Peter! I love this song and I love Peter!❤❤
A rock band with full orchestral instrumentation. When else have you ever said “that was a killer French horn” unless it was in a Chicago power ballad.
I'm 67 grew up listening to this magical band!!!!!!
Just love when youngins finally hear our music 🎶
I truly appreciate this version of Chicago....
As an old guy....I remember that when they started out they were "The Chicago Transit Authority"....local DJ's would shorten that to simply CTA. Later the band changed the name to simply Chicago.
This is bass player/lead singer Peter cetera playing and singing this song
Peter Cetera has such a magical voice!
Chicago has always been some of the finest writers, musicians, and singers in music.
Love Chicago, Peter’s voice is beautiful. I do believe Peter is in the photos shown. Thanks for the reaction
He has one of the most distinctive voices in history so there is no mistaking his voice.
J/Amber, you guys are the absolute best. I enjoy you every day and I thank you for having this channel and for being as wonderful as you both are keep it coming.
It's a song of love it's sung so heartfelt its lyrics just relate to anyone who's been in love or had their heart broken. Loved it when I heard it in high school and still love it today.
Just for fun, I saw Chicago in Tampa stadium back in mid 70's and then warm up band was skynard! Amazing day!
Quite possibly my favorite Chicago song. They have a big band sound here but with soft horns. This song is so beautiful, and romantic.
You can't go wrong with this classic band. He did duets with Amy Grant and Cher, among others. The Cher one was "After All" and Amy Grant was "Next Time I Fall In Love." I suggest some early Chicago such as "Make Me Smile" (1970).
This is a song where your at a night out and you and your partner get up and slow dance holding each other and the only thing that matters in this world is the person in front of you feeling the love for each other.😍
Just being an old romantic at heart.
@RobSquadReaction..... ?
I used to listen to this sing with my headphones in the 1970s. I don't know which is better the instruments or the lyrics. The blend is perfect.
This was before Terry Kath's tragic death. The band, with the exception of Laudir de Oliveira (percussion), was the original line up. After Terry's death, Chicago would never be the same.
One of the best love song s ❤️ ever
Love the violins in this song.
this is my favorite Chicago song. My wife and I were newly married and I had to go to Japan for 6 weeks......this became our song for that time.
One of the most beautiful love songs ever written
Hi family!!!
Great!! In my city is a cold winter Saturday night ideal for listen this song. Love Peter Cetera’s voice.
Thanks for your reaction!
What a beautiful song. Takes me back to some great times.
If you're a music geek.....you know those French horns through-out are on point.
Just gorgeous.
"Make Me Smile" was there 1st big hit & their best fast song, in my opinion.
CHICAGO !!! "If You Leave Me Now' Part of the shift to ballads. Next up - "Wishing You Were Here" There is a live version from the - Rockin' New Years Eve Chicago - concert. They did it with the backing vocals of the Beach Boys. Absolutely beautiful
This is a good selection and one of my favorites. My very favorite is "I've Been Searching So Long", you should react to this one soon, it's one beautiful song.
Yes awesome song!
Writing and performing original music is really hard. Bands with more than one hit are rare. Those with many hits are amazing. I don't think most bands consciously think about changes in direction or music as much as they are trying really hard to pen another hit. When they hit paydirt, they follow that vein until it runs dry. To a degree, aren't we all just trying to stay employed. It isn't until we finish that we look back and appreciate (and maybe understand) our careers for the first time. Probably that way for Chicago too. Talented musicians just trying to stay musicians for one more day and that takes you places that you might not expect. They left behind wonderful music that has enriched my life so I'm thankful.
"If You Leave Me Now" is a song by the American rock group Chicago, from their album Chicago X. It was written and sung by bass player Peter Cetera and released as a single on July 30, 1976. It is also the title of a Chicago compilation album released by Columbia Records (Columbia 38590) in 1983.
This Has been one of my favorite songs of all time. Glad you finally got to it.❤
I Don’t Want to Live Without Your Love- Chicago. J/A this is another top 5 charter and is a great upbeat song! Love to see you react to it! Thanks for reacting to this classic!
This is Peter singing. I believe he was always in the band. On the live video from 75 he is also playing the 12 string Guitar.
Tremendous,
Number One Worldwide And Total Class In A Soothing Way...
Chicago In A Explosive Way
I'M A MAN !!🧨
I enjoy reading the comments when I'm on CZcams, and I can tell you this song is one of the most suggested ballads here (along with "Waiting For A Girl Like You" by Foreigner). Great choice.
It's time to see a live Chicago rock song. I recommend 25 or 6 to 4 live at Tanglewood from 1970. I know you have done the studio version, but you really need to see this one. This was when they had their original guitarist, Terry Kath; you will be impressed. They get started while the drummer is assembling his kit. When it is ready, they really get going. A young Peter Cetera takes the lead vocals, so you will get the chance to see him.
Saw them in concert in 76 when this was the #1 song on the charts.
An underrated song of Chicago is "Wishing You Were Here", a mellower, more moody sound from the band. Great harmonies and backing vocals are provided by Al Jardine, Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys. Definitely worth a listen, guys.
This is Chicago's best. Incredibly moving song.
If I’m not mistaken, this song was #1 for that year.
I’d listen the top 100 hits every New Years Day on AM radio
This is what I call a dreamy song. I love Chicago!
That is a newer picture of the band, probably from 2000's or 2010's; which is long after Peter Cetera left the band. But this song is from 1976 & was written & sung by Peter Cetera.
this is the song that introduced me to Chicago and been hooked onto them since then.
That IS Peter Cetera singing.
Fantastic song , his voice is perfect ❤
This is a great 70s Chicago song. Such a great voive.
Pete Cetera's vocal is STERLING, fantastic!
I LOVE this song. Has to be one of my top 5 ballads. Has to be. ❤
Great reaction Amber! You really make this channel great with your positive energy and great vibes and you really mean it not just saying what you think we want to hear. ☺
I jammed to all of Chicago’s songs as they came out - but wasn’t aware of the intimate history and internal dynamics of the group - and the impact of Terry Kath’s death on the band until years later. The sound changed when David Foster took over, eliminating the horns and showcasing Peter Cetera. Again, great songs - I loved the later ballads, but now I mourn the creative loss of the horns along with Terry Kath’s more jazzy leadership when he so tragically died.
The original studio version of "(I've Been) Searchin' So Long" from the 1974 double album Chicago VII should be next. Composed by trombonist James Pankow, lead vocals by Peter Cetera and lead guitar solo at the end by the late great Terry Kath.
Chicago hard habit to break!!!! Next the vocals And harmonies are amazing
🎶🎺 Chicago "Just You and Me" very special lyrics 👍
Peter Cetera wrote this amazing song. The first major hit of the band back in 1976. And Peter Cetera sings the song too. It was one of my favorite bands of the 70s and 80s.
"If You Leave Me Now" is a song by the American rock group Chicago, from their album Chicago X. It was written and sung by bass player Peter Cetera and released as a single on July 30, 1976.
OK, that was a beautiful Chicago song for Amber. Now it's time for something that rocks for Rob. Try Chicagos 1969 "I'm a Man".
Beautiful song✌️
This song was written and sung by Chicago's bass player - Peter Cetera - in July 1976, whom was with the band from 1967 until 1985. Back-up vocal/harmonizing is Robert Lamm, the band's keyboard/pianist, and also another of the band's primary songwriters, along with James Pankow, trombonist for the band. All 3 of them have been inducted into the R & R songwriters HoF. Robert Lamm is one of the main vocalists for the band, along with Cetera and Terry Kath (up until his death in 1978 - RIP)
