People joke, or just legitimately don’t get it, but those freckles are letting her Clark Kent away from the annoying rabble. Little details in the face really do make a massive difference.
Yeah, it never seems like enough of a change in shows - especially animation - to make them unrecognizable, but the fact is in real life it does not take much to trick the human brain's facial recognition software. People don't see what they don't expect. This is how Robert Downey Jr. managed to enter an Iron Man lookalike contest only to come in second place.
people underestimate the power of makeup
Not to mention how plainly she dresses normaly and she is not wearing conventional makeup either.
The hairstyle itself can make someone not recognize you ^^
The current Emperor treats Lishu like a daughter and has a prounounced hatred for pedophiles.
He's a G.
I mean can you blame him when you think about how his father was, the empress dowager gave birth extremely young and even Lishu was a concubine at nine years old. If my father was like that I would detest him too, makes you wonder if the former emperor died of unfortunate circumstances.
@@azedenfender880Or fortunate ones...
The current emperors mother almost died giving birth to him and only survived because they did a C-section. So not completely surprising. Also the former emperor went out to "hunt" for new women and the rear palace exploded in numbers. Just an overall creep and monster even if you ignore the age aspect.
I love how everyone is just like "oh man she doesn't know about the hairpins" and then proceeds to *never explain the hairpins.*
Since it doesn't harm her, I believe they want to see her reaction when she learns the truth.
A couple people tried and she didn't listen. Guess they just gave up lol
Jinshi is so hurt and Lady Gyouku is just drinking his tears~
They are almost the same age, and she's the sister in law, at least officially, so........
My interpretation is she's snitching now to SAVE the lady-in-waiting. Notice her reasoning for originally not snitching was also to save her. She wasn't certain until now that the poisoned dish was the one she swapped. Now though, Maomao needs to explain why there are so many sets of fingerprints, knowing that hers are among them and that she did not do the actual poisoning. If somehow anyone found out another way that she had touched the dish, she could be executed for a crime she didn't commit.
Sometime feels like Gyokuyou is a stand-in for the audience because she be eating up this drama just like us.
She's stuck in the palace with little to do most of the time. So got to get your entertainment where you can lol. (She's also anya from spy family and Frieren.)
Lihaku: You think you can just come in here and use me to go home?
Maomao: … yeah.
Lishu was returned to her family after the Emperor died. The Ladies in Waiting are usually from family and their treatment of her reflects family’s attitude. The current Emperor rescued her, but in doing so she 9a widow) was now disgraced as a woman getting re-connected with the new Emperor.
Maomao understands this tragic situation. She also understands the food taster is lowest rung among Ladies in Waiting and is hoping/trying have the Food Taster become an ally.
They aren't usually from the family itself, more like servants of said family (usually from other nobility as well at those levels, just not as high as the actual noble family itself where a Concubine is from)
Sorry I did not mean the Ladies in Waiting were blood family, but rather members of the household (e.g., Ladies in Waiting) or other nobles closely associated with the family. Using people close to the family improves the odds they will support and protect the consort. However, if the family has apparently distained Lishu and this distain was instilled into her Ladies in Waiting ergo bullying. This hypothetical backstory of mine (so often this trope in stories) explains Lishu return to Rear Palace prob encouraged by Ah-Duo who knew the young 9 year old girl with previous emperor. What going to happen in the future for Lishu is open, remaining in Rear Palace so young and not visited by the Emperor is unlikely, being sent home again is not happening, maybe retired to a nunnery (although embarrassing is safe), being sent to Ah-Duo Palace, maybe, but long term is open ended.
One other thought, Fengming’s family had wider contacts and there is the mysterious mastermind behind the conspiracy maybe targeting Lishu and Lishu’s family is powerless or doesn’t care.
I can’t believe a character like Lishu (young innocent) was introduced to disappear from the larger story. She is just too cute.

This show is like an anime version of a 90s era medical drama, where she dispenses medical advice and solves crimes. Odd there haven’t been more in that genre.
There are . . . they just aren't very good due to the target audience they attract. The few I really enjoyed got cancelled because they didn't pull the audience they wanted.
This is why I've grown to dislike Western television. Everything is made not to produce a good story that audiences love to watch along, but rather to create never ending drivel, designed to attract the audience that will net them the most money on ad placement.
Like anything on tv that genre got bad when low quality high quantity number of trash shows happened, this is a well written and thought out show of that ilk, it just wouldn’t be bad to see another few animes like this happen
a cool detail!
it's more clear in the full version, but the intro song is actually Jinshi talking about his emotions towards maomao~ it doesn't spoil anything in the show but the lyrics are actually really sweet
This show is primarily a historical drama, and a Rom-com second.
Historical Fiction, since it's based in a Chinese setting without existing in Historical China. Not once is a single country name uttered in the story.
Also, it's far from Rom-Com, since there's no actual romance. The accurate genre is closer to Mystery, drama, and Slice-of-life. We are following Maomao on her daily adventures through life.
@@Ncyphen”No actual romance”? Did you really just say that? Romance is literally one of its listed genres. Maomao and Jinshi's relationship is integral to some parts of the plot already and will become even more important going forward!
@@normalpeoplelikemeYes, I did.
Yes, Maomao's relationship with Jinshi grows over time, but I don't know how anyone could label this series as romance when it's less than 10% of the actual story, and I've read through volume 8 of the series.
@@Ncyphen Because just like how good stories do, it's complex and has tons of different story elements, interesting characters, and plot elements, 10% is pretty big in that perspective, and I know you're low balling that number, I've read until the latest chapter. I might not be light novel reader but I know how the story goes from here. Furthermore romance doesn't have to be a dominating element to be one of the genres, it just has to be a point of focus, and the relationship between Maomao and Jinshi receives quite a lot of focus. I agree with you that it plays less into the story than the slice of life, drama, and mystery genres though.
@@Ncyphenidk man to some as long theres romance then its part of the genre. Though it is pretty accurate to say that this is not a romance anime
Gyokuyou is a chaos gremlin, don't know who came up with that term first and for who or who first called Gyokuyou that but I will spread it every chance I remember!
I love hearing Gyokuyou laughing. Since Frieren's VA voices her, its like a happy Frieren!
Lihaku suspects Maomao is offering herself for some kind of reward - she is not his taste and he has bit of honor as a big puppy.

Look you are so right about Gaoshun being dreamy. That’s a good man right there
Hey I highly recommend you check out “Welcome to Demon School Iruma kun” great world building, sweet relationship, and wholesome babies for a cast of characters.
It's one of the best
Yes! She needs to watch this!
I love freckles soooo much, i prefer freckles than no freckles
I was suprised Alicia already reach ep 7 that quickly
iirc she watched 21 episodes in 2 long sessions on twitch, shes caught up now
@@Its_Dave_Just_Dave wow...If only I can join twitch...especially her patreon.
There are more revelations to come in the future concerning momos birth parents as well as jinshis. It's a little complicated, so you may want to re watch parts in order to fully understand things.
Spoilers jinshi was swapped at birth as is actually the son of the virtuous concubine, not the empress(they actually look a lot alike if you look close. He's only pretending to be a eunuch to help out the emperor by seeing who's loyal to him.
Mamos mom was a courtesan who was attacked by a high ranked military officer in order to bring down her purchase price. Mamo is the result of that encounter. The guy she calls dad is a eunuch who was dismissed from the Palace and took her in as a baby. Her bio dad works at the rear palace.
I assume you've never fallen into quality binge. It's easy to get oneself caught into a binge cycle when the episodes are so good.
@@Its_Dave_Just_Dave I'm half tempted to sub to her Patreon if CZcams is not caught up by next Friday's episode. Next week is going to be so good.
Hi! Just found your reactions to Apothecary Diaries and love them! If you want romance anime where they fall in love quick, please watch Ore Monogatari and A Sign of Affection!💜
I know I'm late on this, but it was stated in episode 1 that the ONLY men allowed inside the rear palace are Eunichs and the Emperor's family. Since you've been convinced from the start that he's not a Eunich, he must be high, high royalty indeed
Episode 7 out of 19 is crazy😮😂😂😂
Not much to say on this episode that Alicia didn't cover, also props to our host for immediately catching onto the true nature of Jinshi's hairpin.
But it's basically a tradition for me now so, avoiding spoilers...
For those curious, Maomao's oyajii has that slight limping gait for a reason. One of his kneecaps has been removed. Explaining why, and how, would be spoiler territory and most of the other points of interest relevant to this episode will be expanded on in the next and future episodes.
Alicia has good insite on those characters.
I absolutly watched up to episode 7 at least when I watched this, it's addictive 💯💯💯. I'm loving these reactions, this show had so many omg moments ❤
So my (german) sub and dub call it "Rokushokan" and the three "Graces"
Can someone tell me wich transliteration is more adequate?
Rokushokan is the japanese word for 'Verdigris Hall' so its pretty word for word.
Graces vs Princesses is subjective in my opinion. I think since we're dealing with an Imperial Palace calling them Princesses is a bit confusing to the layman. Graces is a good substitute, in that it makes them sound elegant and very distinct from the Emperor Consorts, some of which are *ACTUAL* princesses.
If you want a good romance story, that's pretty short. I recommend My Adventures With Superman. Good series with a cast of precious beans.
Does anyone else think 10 months might be a writing error? Like, the makeup business went down three months after the kidnapping, and I think her narration said it was another month before Jinshi brought her to the Jade Pavilion, and she was nursing Lihua for two months… admittedly, that’s six months already, and a week here and there can add up. But on the other hand, she was kidnapped in fall, I’m pretty sure the garden party was in spring, and it can’t have been long since then. 7-8 months feels more plausible to me.
Maomao was only in the rear palace for 3 months when the truth about the makeup was discovered. I doubt they would have waited long to purge the makeup from the rear palace. A month is accurate for Maomao and Guokuyou, as the narration did say it was a month before the rear palace was made aware of the prince's death. This would also give the princess enough time to get better for Guokuyou and Jinshi to trust Maomao's tip.
For anyone coming back to this comment section later, the error was mine. I checked the LN, and while I remembered the anime’s first scenes having falling leaves, I must’ve been wrong - the timeline is pretty clear that Maomao’s kidnapping is early in the year, and the garden party is in winter - early, I think, as the year draws to a close. Which means that the first 6 episodes of this season cover more time than the remaining 18.
(I think the year changed between the ep11 departure and the ep14 arrival, which was part of the reason for their timing.)
Ngl it made me so annoyed when u said “no she’s just entitled so she wore pink,” since it was so wrong. 😭😂
How many episodes did she watch and when did she watch them. Also is the stream still on twitch.
i come to yall with two anime recomendations, danmachi, which will make elf gal cry... and proving love with science, which will ether make elf gal cry laughing... or cringe herself into a singularity... :3
I second that notion of watching "Science fell in love, so I tried to prove it". Dunno if Alicia studied any STEM fields in her educational background, but regardless of that, I'm sure she'd learn a few interesting things on top of enjoying a cute romance between two nerdy and adorkable college students.
Alicia, please try Ore Monogatari.
It's funny, it's whack, it's wholesome, and has beans, big and small.
da baby!
Can someone tell me if she watched or plan to watch the ascendance of a bookworm ?
or Card captor Sakura clear card arc ?
Alicia lady in waiting
Episode 13 is like Season 2.
Alicia can be very sharp or dense sometimes.
so many shows would have had the dad have died while she was a way; glad that didn't here
I think everyone presumes jinshi is the empors brother, but from later episodes, i think he's actually the empors son.
W
What a twist of fate - what if he was the former doctor of the rear palace, but was ordered to leave for some reason, and that's where she gets her love of being an apothecary?
Are you a novel reader trying to hint at what's to come?? If you are, you're doing a poor job at hiding it.
@@Ncyphen HEY GUYS, I THINK THIS COMMENT IS FORSHADOWING. Admonishing a post for potential spoilers works against you.
Also, the dad saying her working at the palace is a twist of fate immediately sounds like he or her mother has a connection there. Thats basic media literacy. You know what is a spoiler though, the fact that Cat-Cat likes herbs and poisons because of her father. How dare they irreverently reveal that your parent has influence over your life.
@@EyePierce I'm a part of the Ascendance of a Bookworm community. We have so much trouble on the reddit prediction threads from people who've read the web novel secretly spoiling the book as a "prediction."
