🎤 Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
You got a fast car
And I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Startin' from zero, got nothin' to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothin' to prove
[Verse 2]
You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I've been workin' at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just across thе border and into the city
And you and I can both get jobs
Finally see what it mеans to be livin'
[Verse 3]
See, my old man's got a problem
He live in the bottle, that's the way it is
He said his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
So Mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said, somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did
[Pre-Chorus]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Verse 4]
You got a fast car
We go cruising and entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
So I work in the market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
And we'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house, live in the suburbs
[Chorus]
Said I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Verse 5]
You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans, I ain't goin' nowhere
Take your fast car and keep on driving
[Chorus]
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast, I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped around my shoulder
And I, I, had a feeling that I belonged
I, I, had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
[Instrumental Break]
[Outro]
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Still gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

I appreciate the fact that Luke understood the perfection and simplistic beauty of Chapman’s song and kept his cover true to the original.
I LOVE that he didn't change a thing about the original. What a tribute! ❤
Thank you Tracy Chapman for giving us the gem. Thank you Luke Combs for bringing it back into the spotlight. This is an amazing cover of a timeless classic! I believe I speak for most everyone who has heard both versions…”please record a duo!” To all the critics, put race and opinion aside for just a moment and appreciate great music.
“Checkout girl” is a subtle acknowledgment and respect Luke gives to inimitable singer songwriter Tracey 🙇🏻♂️
Normally I am skeptical about folks covering songs that should be left untouched. But after listening to this cover all I can say is WELL DONE! He remained true to the song.
"Leave tonight or live and die this way..." Glad to see this tune back at the top. Some songs transend generations. I still have this vinyl. Chapman was a poet - a pure spirit. Luke hits all the right notes.
Wow he didn't change one word... 😢thank u Luke, for respecting a classic, most people wouldn't... Excellent job❤
It really doesn't matter who sings this song it still brings tears. It's so beautiful and connects with every generation of young people trying to overcome the situational bullsh*t they were born into and self destructive habits they inherited from a toxic family.
Now this is a cover! No fancy pointless touch ups, no trying to reinvent something that didn't need fixing. Just a nice simple tribute to an extremely beautiful song.
This song is as pure as it gets. It’s like your soul getting a little taste of the divine. Thank you Tracy and thank you Luke for this beautiful cover and honoring an American masterpiece by keeping the pure, timeless essence of the original.
I would absolutely love a Chapman and Combs duet on this song 💜 it would sound like heaven.
Tracy loves it, and that's great. Everyone is trying to make something of this hitting number 2 on the country charts. Great music will always survive. It still gives me chills.
What a lovely tribute to Tracy Chapman's iconic song. Luke stayed true to the simple, raw, elegance of this meaningful song.
Crazy, after all this time, still brings tears to my eyes. Luke, thank you for breathing new life into this classic song. Although I will always think of this as Tracy Chapman's masterpiece, you do a great job of singing it. No one seems to write like this anymore, exposing heart and soul while telling a compelling story. For me, this is what songs are all about. This and "Jolene" are two amazing examples of what songs should and could be.
One of the greatest songs of all time. A timeless classic and great cover by staying true to the song and not altering it.
Nice cover, good to see it will reach a new generation of listeners but you gotta hear the songwriter, Tracy Chapman’s original, beautiful, magnificent recording. The song slayed in the 80’s and it does still.
My dad used to blast the original in the car with my sister and I back in the 90’s. This is a great cover, and it’s wonderful that this has also brought new generations of fans to the music of Tracy Chapman!
I am so pleased with this cover of a song that was an icon of the late 80s and still is today.
Earned a new fan.
