Yup, good example for a good ad. Not too long, funny and entertaining and still advertises well for the product. Most modern commercials are so dull and boring, car ads are usually cranking lifestyle shit to 300% and nobody cares to memorize them. But the old lady driving like a stunman, that's something to remember. Also because of perfect execution.

And by the way, we know about the sales ("VW Golf sales" on Google). The commercial was released in 2011. Apparently, it didn't work. The sales went down, while at the same moment, the car industry was selling more cars than the previous year, globally.

@@resnonverba137 Yes, like spending quality time with your friends, or working for an NGO, or learning something new. It's good and enjoyable, with no commercial purpose, and therefore, no commercial success.
But commercials are created to manipulate you. That is not enjoyable. Plenty of people who have worked in marketing have explained how it works (in my country, I can name Frédéric Beigbeder and Thierry Ardisson, who created some of the most famous and liked commercials in France). They have explained that their job really consists in brainwashing you while giving you the illusion that it's fun and harmless.
Your reaction was expected. The commercial was crafted to generate this very reaction.

My father had VW all his life and they all got old. Last our Polo got 20 years old without any big issues, but it started to rust at essential parts that's when we knew it was over. But that car turned 20 years old without any kind of special care. Dad is still driving a T4 from 2002. Starts to have some trouble with rust as well, but treatable and not on carrying parts. Before he had a T3, that was idk how old, I wasn't born when he got it. Unfortunatly my brother had a nasty accident with it, the car was a write-off, but everyone in the car was fine luckily. That car would have easily survived much longer. Uncle drives a Golf 2, makes the checkup every time.

Of course, there is also the " flip side ". My mother's maiden aunt bought a new car every 7 or 8 years, though I am not sure why. In 1964 she traded a pristine looking 1956 Plymouth for a new 1964 model. If I remember correctly, this car had a 6 cylinder engine, power steering and brakes, and a factory tinted windshield...and that's it. No radio and no other options. The car was probably never driven over the speed limit. And because she had the body painted after every little scrape or bump, the fenders must have had nearly double the factory paint...when she wrecked it. In 7 years it never accumulated more than 15,000 miles.

    Fantastic commercial.
Though I never understood, why a car owned by an old person was considered a good deal. Because they often don't know how to properly handle a car, unintentionally torturing many mechanical parts, which then need to be changed. Also often running short distances, which really isn't good for the engine. Also many of them drive rarely, it's bad when the car is only moved every 2 weeks - a lot of standing around kills a car.

    • @ignacymoscickifilms670

Yeah, my grandpa has a corsa from '99, it drives nicely (although the steering wheel is tilted). When i talked to him once, it turned out he was convinced that engine braking is bad for your car, the lower you go in the rev range the less gas you use and he never used 5th gear, even outside of town.

    • @HellHunter00

The stereotype is that old ladies drive the car gently; they don't high rev it or fly over speed bumps etc. Which is everything the old lady in this commercial wasn't doing. 😂
I'm also not too sure how standing around kills cars? Modern synthetic engine oil doesn't goop up like the old mineral oils and the only thing you really need to be worried about are tyre flat spots but those won't develop in 2 weeks either- months at least. Another small concern is the battery but a healthy battery should be enough for a few weeks without starting.
I've kept cars in storage before and consulted multiple mechanics who generally say it's fine as long as the car is turned over every 2 weeks and moved a little if not on stands. If there's no one to run it there's a longer procedure list like draining certain oils etc. and the car can be stored for years.

volkswagen are just solid cars. No cheap plastic, durable engines... . The new ones, after 2020 are great again, from 2014 onwards there were some shitty cars. i am driving an 2002 Passat 3bg with a 1.9tdi engine. it was the first car of my uncle, he bought it used, after that it was the first car of my aunt. she drove it until 2015, where it got sacked for 2 years. The funny part is, that up until 2015 there was only like 1000€ used to newer some parts, like waterpump (excluding other services like oil change). i got it gifted then in 2017, took 1000€ again, made service and renewed a hose that got eaten by mise and the car drives perfectly fine with still a lot of power for 131ps. I am so happy with it.
To sum up: for a lifespan of 20 years, 18 years it was a daily driver, got 290 000km on it (mostly short distance, normally not good for a diesel) and only had to renew parts worth 2000€ in 20 years. if that is not a deal than i don't know what in life it is. Best car ever.
