  • In this new series titled Sustainable Home, we will take you through a series of videos on how to build a sustainable home. At Aanandaa, we are building an innovative and creative home, which is as sustainable as possible. We have explored several construction technologies and designs to ensure we have the most natural, resilient and energy efficient home.
    Sustainable architecture at Aanandaa is directed by Ar. Jitesh Malik from Studio Aureole. The integral design practice at their studio combines a commitment to environmental sensitivity with a contemporary design language and a pedagogical process. At Aanandaa, Jitesh creatively contextualised a diverse range of sustainable practices to collaboratively work towards an aesthetically enriching experience.
    Studio Aureole team: Prabhjot, Richa, Mandav, Harshita and Tanvi
    Collaborators/Experts: Lallan, Ashumi, Malvika (Mlime), Narayanji (Rohtak domes)

    This ramearth works is actually revival of rural technology which was in place some 30 years back before this cement revolution when soil,Sand & lime where the main ingredients. This project is an amalgation of rural knowledge &modern architecture.
    Back at my rural house ,when the summer temp soars in between 40-45degree Centigrade, it's cool respite inside without any fan /electricity and u never come to know it's evening. A great work done by your team in preserving the ancient traditional culture which was self-dependent/reliant & eco-friendly.

    • @farmaanandaa
      @farmaanandaa  Před 2 lety +4

      Difficult to do so because we havent finished building, but it costs the same as regular construction. Only material cost is lesser and man power cost is more.

    • @jiteshmalik3606
      @jiteshmalik3606 Před 2 lety +2

      Cost per square foot could range between 2000 to 3000 or more, depending on the availabity of materials and resources, infrastructural costs and kind of finishes. If we look, just at rammed earth, labour cost of ramming and finishing is abour 225 per cubic foot but total cost is dependent on a few factors:
      1. Availability of earth: on site or does this have to be brought to site. What other aggregates you need to mix with your base earth/soil.
      2. Experimentation/ Tests to get the right mix...proportions of stabaliser to the base earth/soil. We have used about 10% lime by volume for the earth/soil type that we have here. In some cases ( more sandy soil) 5-7% cement may work better as a stabaliser. If you have the right mix and can do thicker walls, you may not use any stabaliser, but more labour for ramming.
      3. Shuttering or Formwork cost: This can be reduced if you are sharing, or renting or reusing the materials afterwards. We have used marine plywood and metal pipes, both of which we plan to reuse on the same site.
      4. You will save on plastering cost if you do the repairs well and leave all the rammed earth walls exposed.

    Do we need to many jeevamrut drums to irrigate in farms?
    I am just curios to know as looking to implement permaculture in my farm!
    If i am not wrong, those small drums can be easily carried to the required plantation areas for irrigation than drip setup!

    your sustainability should be defined by the simplicity of it's set up:
    1> ram pump for running water - gardening (including hydroponic gardening) and long term water storage
    2> 6x12v battery bank that is charged by waterwheel, solar and wind (both the water and the wind can be rigged with an simple electric motor) - depending on the weather conditions...heck, they have even developed a charging system that works off of a rocket stove...
    the main goal of the battery bank is for shelter heating...if it can be used for lighting, etc - then that's just gravy...
    3> shelter heating (non electrical) - saw a vid where a craftsman wrapped the stove chimney around the shelter and out the other side (where he built an access door for smoking and drying meat...another one built his bed on top of the horizontal part of the chimney to warm his bed)...
    4> dealing with human poop is actually easier if you don't have to ship it off somewhere else...
    i guess the key is to not depend on the technology - always have a backup plan that doesn't involve it...

    How much living space is sustainable? None of the current architects will address that basic question. The sustainable living paradigm has to expand to include the size of houses being built. A small family can live very comfortably in about 1200 Sqft of living space. Should they buy or construct a large house of 2500 sqft living space simply because they have the financial capacity? Should the need for external validation drive this family to build a large house?
    Sustainable living can only happen by limiting our wants. No architect will tell you that for obvious reasons.
