  • On the edge of one of England’s largest forests lay a medieval building abandoned for nearly a century. Dating back to the 1400s it was built by the Prior of Our Lady's Priory Thetford by license of the king to hunt small game. This gamekeeper lodge continued to be used as a rabbit warren until the early 20th century before being converted into a farmhouse and abandoned soon after following a fire in 1935. A famous ghost story surrounds this location relating to a so called ‘leper’ who is believed to haunt the lodge. A caretaker of the lodge between 1903-05 claimed a man suffering from leprosy once inhabited the top floor a century before and he even found his bell and begging bowl - although was advised not to touch these for fear of cross contamination. The caretaker also claimed to have a frightening encounter with the spectral leper on the spiral staircase of the lodge. So intense was the paranormal activity he later resorted to bricking up the stairwell entrance. Said to have black holes where his eyes and mouth should be this spirit is still terrifying passersby in modern times and recently a detailed eye witness came forward who identified the entity in blue and white ragged clothing peering down from the upstairs window - bearing in mind there are no internal floors for him to stand on. During medieval times those suffering from leprosy were kept separated from the rest of the community and isolated on the edge of the town due to the highly infectious nature of the disease.

Although having left Norfolk many years ago I have fond memories of my cousin and I playing in the ruins of the old lodge, that was before the ironwork was installed of course.
Never saw or heard the ghost though, nor the terrible guardian rabbit.
Must say I've never heard the rabbit legend before, that's new to me, although my grandfather used to warn us to take care and be careful of the ghost.
Some of the old-timers in the area certainly used to call the place 'the leper warren', so there's probably some truth in the story that a leper did indeed reside there at some point in the past.
Anyway, great video with superb drone footage. Stirred memories of my childhood long past, enjoyed it very much.
    Thanks for uploading.

Hi thanks for the kind comments. How interesting hearing from someone with past connections to the lodge. When you used to visit was the staircase accessible and did you have access to the upper floor? Or was that already gone by that time?

      @@HauntedandAbandonedNorfolk :
Hi there. Back during the mid 60's, when I was a nipper, there was no upper floor nor roof on the place. Gazing up from the ground floor it was just open sky above.
I do seem to recall the stairs were dangerously open, as were all the doorways.
One of my great uncles was a warrener for Euston estate, from around the time of the Great War through to the 1960's, and his son, now in his mid 80's, is an absolute mine of information on the subject.
He donated much of what remained of his father's warrener equipment, nets, 'ruttlin poles', traps etc, to the museum in Brandon, where they're all currently on display.
Incidentally, both my great uncle and and my grandfather knew the family who lived in the lodge cottage before it sadly burnt down.
Next time I visit my second cousin I'll glean a bit more info from him about the place.
