A much requested comparison between my 8138, a darker leather 875 style Classic Moc-Toe boots and the 8111 Iron Rangers! Materials and construction are discussed in depth. Both boots have high quality throughout but significant design departures which results in a very different break in process and feel on the foot!
Please give this a thumbs up if you found it informative and if you're new here, I'd love to have you as a subscriber! Thanks for watching.

Those Mocs are due for a re-sole! Also, 8136 and 875 are built on different lasts. 875 sits on the 23 last.

Great review! I've had the Iron Rangers for years and walked many miles in the field dove hunting with them. I can say they take a while to break in but once they do they're pretty comfortable, especially if you wear a good pair of socks. If you keep them oiled they'll last a lifetime.

Ive got a pair of moc toe 1907's. I've had them for 2 days now. Its taken me a bit to get used to the white crepe sole but I absolutely love these boots. First day of break in was brutal. 8 hours of work and my feet were killing me lol! Bought some obenaufs leather preservative to soften up the leather and after 3 hours of work on the 2nd day of break in and these bad boys are almost broke in. Highly recommend these boots for anyone that spends a lot of time on their feet doing hard labor

Word of advise. The obenaufs will darken up the leather a tad bit so if you are one that wants to keep the original color of the boot, beware. As for myself, i want something that is gonna make the leather last a long time and this stuff is the best on the market.

I am a Red Wing fan because of your videos. I discovered the brand watching your videos. I ended up collecting many boots. After many years of experimenting with Frye Alden, Danner, Allen Edmonds, Golden Fox and Red Wing I am convinced about Red Wing top quality. Currently own a old Generation Black Smith, an Iron Ranger, a Rover, a heritage work chucka and a work Cap Toe with super sole. I had the 875 in Oro Legacy and will buy again some day. I love Red wing boots for work and play . Thanks for the inspiration.

Hello! I really enjoy your videos about Red Wing boots, and they have given me lots of insight into my own pair of boots; the classic 875's. I would like to suggest that you make a video about how you take care of your boots. It cannot be denied that your reviews are quite popular and informative. You also undoubtedly have an enormous amount of knowledge on them. Your expertise and method of caring for your boots would prove very resourceful. You might consider it. Keep up the high quality!

I have the 877 8" moc toe and the 8111 Iron Rangers and my experience is that the Iron Rangers needed no time at all to break in, where as the 877's are still very stiff and not yet broken into after about 3 months of regular wear. Just thought I would share.Great video by the way! :)

  •  Před 4 lety +1

I pretty sure I got into Red Wings because of you. I have 4 pairs now. One correction about the iron ranger tough. It is a one piece footbed with a heel pad covering for the clinch nails that hold the heel. A 2 part footbed would be catastrophic when thinking of durability. Also no shank is needed when you have a 360 welt wedge sole.
    Great videos man 👍🏻

With regard to your question on lens use. I'm a photographer and personally find 50mm prime to be my go to lens most times I'm not shooting wildlife or botanical macros. If you're doing anything you'd like to look like a POV shot, 50mm is perfect, as it mimics the field of view of the human eye. All those old photographs from important times in our history that illicit a feeling of "being there in the action" were shot on a 50 for that reason.

I've worn Red Wing steel toes for 40-60 hours a week for 13 years now. I've found that it isn't the weight of the boot that is an issue, you get used to that. Break-in is everything. Am I the only one that hates the turned up pant cuff look? seems like people are just trying to show off their expensive denim.

The video is very good, I believe other CZcamsrs use the term crispy and your video is very crispy. The macro shots on the boots, both on the inside and outside, are great. This normally true for all your product related shots. It really helps me to understand the construction and quality each boot.
I normally watch your videos on my laptop or phone, as the audio of my prime devices is solid, but not premium. I can not hear quality changes in the audio from video to video. What I can say is the I can hear and understand your voice, I don't need to turn up the volume to hear your videos which I need to do on some other CZcamsrs I follow. As for the boots, how do the sole's hold up. The moc toe's sole appeared as if it needed to be replaced.

Great review. If Redwing would put the moc toe sole on the Iron Ranger I would be all over it. I find the soft wedge sole more comfortable and safer. I had a pair of the moc toe boots that I gave away because where the upper leather met the boot portion above the heel created a large very uncomfortable ridge that rubbed me bloody raw. Not comfortable at all. I opted then for Redwing's hiker style boot that were great until my dogs ate them. Be careful where you leave your boots after applying mink oil. Lesson learned.

Thanks for the video Andrew, I know it takes a lot of time and effort into creating extremely high quality videos and this upload is no exception.
Co-incidentally you uploaded this the very same day I just bought a pair of 8114's to match my 8166 moc toes! A shame that the only retailer of Red Wings down here in New Zealand is raising their prices to the $700 NZD mark, and paired with the fact that they have limited range, I probably won't be buying any more boots soon.
Also regarding your final note on the videography stuff, I really liked the look of the previous 50mm prime lens with the shallow depth of field, which lets us focus more on you by blurring the distractions of the background. Get your widest possible aperture (smallest number), I think your zoom lens should at least hit 3.5.

I'm getting the moc toes soon . I was at the shoe store the other day and for the first time I bought a pair of Redwing loggermax made in America. The boots were 320$ and they are awesome. I wore all other American brands like Thorogood , Danner and Carolinas Domestic line. Word of advice spend the extra money and buy the Redwings the build quality and materials blow the completion away. Make sure you try them on . In the heritage line and work line that I tried on I was a 12 D. Carolinas I wear an 11 , Justin's 10.5 Danners 11 ee. The reviewers will tell you to size down in Redwings so if would have ordered on line I would have went with a 10 and I would be sending them back because they would be too small.

You may have figured this out, but when using a camera on a tripod make sure image stabilization on the lens is off. Also, it may be useful to use a wireless shutter remote to achieve focus at the desired distance, so you can do it from in front of the camera.

But I will be changing out the speed hooks, I love them on my other pair but my work boots end up bending the hooks to crap after months of crawling around in attics.

I am considering either of these style of boots. I have the budget Irish Setter of the moc toe boot. It was great once I got a bigger size and they broke in. However the sole is gone in one year from daily use and abuse with work. The cost to resole them is 80% of the original cost of the boot and I don't think its worth the cost to resole on the Irish Setters. I think I were to go with the Moc toe Red Wing Version again I'd go with the 8" version for more ankle support.
However, I love the look of the Iron Ranger better. I just love that early 20th century styling. I am concerned about not giving enough support for my back with 8 hrs on me feet with outdoor work. Are they good with impact shock etc. Are they a real work boot or recreated for fashion?
Which of these would be good for work in dryer climate (Southwest), good for every day work, digging, planing, and grounds keeping. Maybe some concrete work etc.
You're right the Iron Rangers can be dressed up. I get credit form work for a pair of Red Wings on my new job so I'm going to be getting a pair soon. Thx.

I just found them to be a far better walking boot , also have a loop on the back for slipping them on quicker ,
    When sizing those wing shooter
I had to go one size smaller from a 13 to a 12
    And go to wide size
Also have the Irish setter Ashby moc toe and those run true to size . the Ashby is on the lower end seemingly a very light duty boot with less support . easy on and off cool in the summer time boot

This might be a dumb question, but how is the iron rangers supposed to fit? Put on a tennissock and if you have some millimetres to spare in the toe department you're good? the capped toe seems so long!

Those moc toes are at the epitome of being broken in so it's not surprising that they are more comfortable. Any chance on a follow up video to see if the iron rangers become equally comfort over time?

How do u feel about the footbeds with these boots? I bought the 10875s and the sale reps told me to purchase the footbed. I havent used a footbed in any of my other boots so that was weird, are the red wings very hard on the bottom of the feet?

I enjoyed the audio quality during the vid but I'm guessing you were too close the mic because you can hear the mouth chomping whilst you talk?
I didn't like the hissing mic at the end of the video.

    • @frankfattore989
      @frankfattore989 Před 4 lety

lobosps1 mic toe will inherently bee more comfortable, due to the softer composition of the TT sole. Also, try a good pair of merino wool socks with any RW heritage. They have cushioning properties.

Hey I was looking to get a pair of red wing 8119 mainly because of the lugged soles that would provide more traction during the winter. But was wondering on the iron ranger what is the width of the toe box? Is it wider than an Oxford or dress boot or roughly the same in comparison? Thanks

I got a lot out of this
I’m a camera man that’s how I pay the rent
Maybe get a mic stand and bring your ride micro over the top so it’s even closer
And re depth of Feild you want to open your iris all the way ideally 1.8 in a room that size but focus will be tricky not sure how the canon 60 is with that .

+Idea Called Freedom shoe trees help to absorb moisture. i wore a pair of red wing 3140 without trees for 3 years and the insole started to crack a bit. got some new white's boots and made sure to get some nice cedar shoe trees to protect the insole from moisture and counter act he creases in the vamp when not being worn.
