Having 4 young children, we were apprehensive about moving to a new country, but your channel was probably one of the biggest resources that made us make the big decision to move here. Great to watch this video! We've been waiting for it! But slightly different viewpoint from us - we're moving to Mackay (two drs) in January and childcare although yes oversubscribed costs as much as what we pay in UK (£75a day- 150 dollars) but opening hours of childcare centers in Australia actually cover our working hours as opposed to having to have nannies/babysitters every day to cover our working hours here in UK. Schools much cheaper than what we would pay here - we would never be able to afford a private school for our older one as good as the one we registered her in Mackay. And although we won't be eligible for any childcare initially while on 482 visa, we are not eligible for almost anything in UK either. So it's important to do "your maths" because sometimes even with apparent higher costs in Australia it may work similar/better.
Hello! For us in Scotland we were given 1140 free childcare per year, everyone was given this regardless of income so it's definitely been a 'more expensive' cost for us. That being said, I do agree that prices probably aren't that much different as we were apprx £60 per day. Good luck with your move! :)
@kimberleylucas true! Definitely depends on circumstances. We now both work full time, one salary almost goes to childcare and afterschool costs! Also, a lot of people in our area have been left with no choice but to put their kids in private schools as the state ones in our area aren't great! We can't and instead of waiting for the school to sort library books (it's been 6 weeks with no reading and Australia's literacy rates are not great so this really annoys me) we do that bit at home. Luckily rhe public library is fantastic!!!
You should consider Campbelltown, SW Sydney. House prices are affordable (for Sydney) and the public transport to the city is pretty good. Good hospital, lots of childcare facilities, beaches in Wollongong, Kiama, Seacliff, Gerringong are less than an hour away and aren't crowded like the city beaches (also free parking unlike the city!). It's a pretty good area for immigrants, ignore what the city snobs say about it!
When you move it is not going to be an instantaneous upgrade of your life. If you had made this move in 1970 ish you would have been guaranteed a visa last allowed you to stay. But you still have to have done the hard yards to fit in. It is certainly worth hanging in. Do your time like we all have to.

Just some thoughts from someone who has lived in several places in UK and NSW. As a Civil Engineer traditionally you are pretty employable. It might be even worth considering a bit further up the Coast - Newcastle is Australia's largest town outside of capital cities and has big city services and reasonable employment opportunities as well as some great beaches (and vineyards). Some attractive suburbs like Lake Macquarie. Just over 2 hours by train from Sydney. Good schools including state selectives. Having lived in Port Macquarie would not recommend further up the coast except for retirement - even if you get a job very difficult to change; great climate but very small town facilities; great beaches and scenery with cheaper housing which can also be a trap.
Kids missing out on relationships with grandparents has to be tough , they play such a vital role in children's lives , growing up without close extended families is definitely the biggest payoff for chikdren , not knowing their cousins /Grandparents/Aunties & Uncles (except through a screen ) is kind of sad for children .
Oh yay! Kimberley and Ewen! I really hope u guys stick it out and if possible, move to Perth. Easier for holidays to and from Scotland and better weather.
Can you do some day in the life type videos? Maybe a video of you guys shopping/getting ice cream then going to the beach or going camping? Or a video of a night out with your mates sort of like the Christmas special you did. Cheers
Look at catholic schools, as an atheist that's hard for me to say lol, but have had mates that put their kids in catholic schools and the costs were quite reasonable.
First off as an Australian we dont all spend all our time with a can of beer most now working long hours to pay off mortgages or rent. Things changed big time here when Covid arrived and also Society we have grown up we are not yobbo's we dont all go around drinking our heads off and go to pubs. Ok we are a Multi Ethnic country and you need to learn this that if your escaping problems in the UK we also have same people here but they do live mostly peaceful lives ok and the weather every state here is different. Yes we are not all wealthy many live below poverty line here and cannot get a home to even rent its bad so please dont give people wrong idea not to mention the snakes spiders and mosquito problem in Queensland if you come here thinking its England forget it we are further from being British as your warm beer. I had cousin from England who came here self employed spent about 45k british pounds to a so called immigration specialist went home to England after two years broke and sorry he came here. So be careful here its not safe in Cities or the suburbs particularily in Melbourne and Sydney Youth Gangs and assaults are big home invasions too. its not like it used to be ...

Isn't the crime rate on the higher side in that part of the city?
