    Thanks for this awesome video, I had a great time working on this game (I did most of the AI, pathfinding, some staff combat and some player movement stuff). And you're totally right, the player movement and combat were absolutely the prototype for Jedi Outcast, which we did in 10 months (for that one I did the lightsaber combat, the force powers and the Jedi/Reborn AI). We brought over the player animation system from this game into our Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force engine and lightsaber combat was born. These are some of my favorite game development experiences.

      I spent endless hours playing in JK:JA multiplayer. Up to present times this is still the combat system imo. Thank you for your work!
      Shame that your work is not being developed further -- it would be amazing to polish it and to get rid of the quirks produced by unstable connections and liberately introduced network lags for some new games!

    For reference: Raven was thrown into the COD mines because they REALLY screwed the pooch on Singularity super-hard. (Searching for "the confessional singularity" should bring up an article with all the gory details.) Combine that with seemingly nobody buying Wolfenstein 2009 until people started making videos about it being underrated, and they kinda *had* to make Faustian bargains to keep the doors open...

      Neversoft and the ghost of Infinity Ward apparently worked together well enough on Ghosts that, combined with the decision by Neversoft's bosses to retire, the decision was made to merge the two studios together. Since they were working on COD games, the Infinity Ward name was kept, and the Neversoft eyeball was, uh, doused in petrol and given a viking funeral at the tip of a flaming arrow. Really!

    The third person view in Heretic 2 was an innovation and had some of the most flawlessly designed animations at the time. But considering that the game was completed in 10 months, there were quite a few elements that were not thoroughly play tested.
    My critique of the third person was as you mentioned, the inconsistency between the crosshair and where your projectile actually hits. This issue becomes worse when you aim for enemies which are quite a distance away. Another issue was the strafing animation.
    Potentially this game has a lot of things to offer, but they shipped it out too early. Although I think it was a commercial failure because of the sudden switch to the third person view rather than the mentioned issues, which honestly don't take much away from the game.

    Ok, do you take suggestions? Three letters, MDK. Very different in style and tone from the Build/Doomclone lineup, unique in its own way to this day I'd say. Also, gggman hasn't covered it. I know, because I've been heckling him for it since he had 1K subs. MDK is awesome and all the yunguns need to know.

    The "ghost shrine" didn't appear in the single-player game, but grants temporary invisibility and appears in the multiplayer DM maps. Btw, this game had a lively community in the 2000s, with a lot of extra content made, including multiplayer mods and single-player add-ons. It kinda died down after 2010 or so, though... :*(

      If I read your name right, you're the guy who designed the Ogle Return of Morcalavin addon. I enjoyed playing that along with Shadow Slayer and a few others. You did a really great job there and truly reminded me of the long lost abstract level design from the 90s. You should try working with indies on one of the retroshooters. I'm quite sure 3d-realms will appreciate your talent.

      Hope you do get a chance to shine there. Anyway thanks for creating those awesome add-ons and THF. Heretic II was undoubtedly my favorite entry from the Heretic-Hexen franchise and it was the first 3D game I played as a kid along with Wolf-3D. I was deeply saddened to see it not receiving the attention it deserved only thanks to community's presuppositions about how a Heretic game could look like in third person. In fact, even the popular "Siege" mode in multiplayer games started off as a Hexen II multiplayer mod sometime in '98 and this was before the first Team Fortress released

      Truly one of those games that i would mind if it would get the sequel or full remake. Gore system and fair but hard balance were the brightest sides of that game. And with all respect for Dark Souls but those aspects are the things that DS series did not achieve even in the last game. The closest in fun of hack and slash (or just slash) the enemies to pieces is RUNE but it is more fast paced than SBoD and less tactical which is another very good game i guess.

    • @craftyyoungster4528
      @craftyyoungster4528 Před 5 lety

      Rune is the one about a viking, right? It's pretty simple compared to SBoD (and at least seems pretty short), nothing complex like Severance's combos and more restricted movement but it's fun. Another simple 3rd person hack and slash game that I really liked is the first Bloodrayne. It's a little bit different with its abundance of guns (that you drop once they are out of ammo) but your main way of dealing with bad guys should still be close combat. The only problem with recommending it is that the first short tutorial chapter is pretty BORING. But once the player is past it, the game improves significantly, in my opinion. It's just so fun to run around playing a half-vampire killing machine that can actually terrify her enemies. It has a pretty nice dismemberment system too and I like how there are many situations where you find different groups of enemies fighting each other. Also, Bloodrayne 2 improves the graphics, adds more depth to the combat and platforming and manages to screw up by ending up way more boring than the first game. It's still bearable and okay to play with some breaks here and there but way worse than its predecessor. Too many stupid repeating puzzles, the platforming feels somewhat stiff and the enemies are way less fun: in the first game, you have the likes of Nazi soldiers with guns pissing their pants when up against the protagonist and you can understand why, in the second game you often get human punks fearlessly trying to punch a night monster lady with their bare hands after she chopped the rest of their buddies up with her arm blades.

    Damn, just watching that wide selection of weapons and magic spells.blasting colorful particles all over the place makes me want to play the game again. The spell variety and colorfull missles was so on point, every single weapon and spell felt impactful and out of the norm and I remember how excited I was when I realized I can kill the rats by stepping on them in brutal stomping fashion which was accompanied by grotesk sounds and blood splatters on the ground. I remember being so impressed that the developers put those little details in the game, instead of making them take only weapon damage like other foes. I remember getting excited when the miner started an uprising when I attacked the guards like you showed. I remember disliking the swamps and getting lost in the water temples for hours searching for spell ingredients and I remember replaying the final battle 3-4 more times, thinking I did something wrong and got the bad ending when the evil sorcerer ascended to godhood instead of getting slayn like evil antagonists in most games. Still even with the frustrating parts the game is great.

    Fun fact(s): Sidhe, short for Aos Sidhe, is a gaelic term meaning people of the mounds, used to refer to faeries who were often said to live underground in a realm that could be accessed through faerie mounds. For those that don't know the fair folk were nothing like Tinkerbell, they were more like some combination of elves, ghosts, and demons that follow strange rules and can absolutely fuck you up if you offend them.
    One fairly common explanation of where faeries come from is that when Lucifer was cast out of heaven, the angels that sided with him were sent to hell, while those that remained neutral were sent to Earth. Only those that sided with god stayed in heaven. The angels on Earth became the faeries. Since seraphim, or seraphs, are the highest order of angels, you could say that seraphs are an older race that became the sidhe.
