      As much as I would love to agree with you there was a study that people change their phones every 2 to 3 years, I personally try to make mine last at least 3 or 4 but in reality most manufacturers support their phones with updates every 3 to 4 years, after that you are on your own with security. Sucks I know but it is what it is.

      I've had my iPhone 6S Plus almost as long as it's been released (approximately 5 years ago) now that's an old phone right there, but it's still kicking and being updated by Apple.
      Yeah soon enough, it might not get updated anymore, but 2 years isn't old enough, unless you somehow can't take care of your phones and need replacements every now and then. I'd understand if it's considered old for at least 4 or 5 years after you had it, but 2 years is definitely not old enough. I'd say that's a rich person's perspective if they consider a 2 year old phone to be "old".

    The 636 was a mid range chip when it launched and even now no dedicated retro gaming console (even $200+ ones like the GPD XD+) gets even close to its performance. Recent flagships (855/865 chips) can even run the majority of PS2 games smoothly now. Even if you don't have top end chipsets, most people will get far better value for money just investing in a decent controller setup. The only real reason to go dedicated is for the nostalgia factor of owning a handheld console.

    You mention that "in some cases" a dedicated handheld console is better, but I would really like to hear you discuss the various pros and cons in detail. After owning several handheld emulation devices, and being disappointed by all of them to an extent (bad built-in emulators/firmware, mediocre performance/battery life, long boot times), moving to phone+controller ended up being the far superior solution for me.

    • @TakiUdon
      @TakiUdon  Před 4 lety

      A huge con is security. A lot of the devices on the market request root privileges and use apps that pose a large security risk. I've yet to see a controller software package that matches the performance of the built-in one on the i7s.

      @@TakiUdon I don't understand, do you mean the Bluetooth controllers require root access on Android? (I don't understand what "root" would mean here, you don't need a rooted phone.) I have done that before but phones degrade hard after a year or two. The controller usually takes up the charging port, they become disconnected often, it's hard to carry, and emulators usually require a lot of unusual tweaking.

    Thanks. Though, I really don't think a small screen (~5-7 inches) is very suitable for anything above 16-bit console emulation. Those early console games were made for small screens; big dialogue boxes, no mini maps in the corner etc. Exceptions to this (minor complaint) would, of course, be the handheld console emulators.

    I tried for a long time to use my phone for emulation because of the power that these have, I tried every controller in this video, mounting the dualshock, the switch types, but it was a big nope.
    The emulation quality that you can achieve with them is not disputed. The immediacy by having all in one case with included controls, designed exclusively to be ready to play that the portable consoles give you will never be replaced by a phone, I even arrived to the point to skip android-based consoles too, for the simple fact of having another apps, web browsers and functionalities at hand that take you out of the gaming experience.
    Experience told me that my search will always be 100% dedicated consoles.

      Lightweight custom roms for Android are out there. You root your phone to flash them, use Pico GApps or don't use GApps at all, root after flash to remove simple bloatware (calculator, whatever you don't want) and unroot/deroot. Then install a launcher of your liking, or use DIG.
      The Moto G5s Plus is a good phone, and there's a very good and light Android custom ROM for it. If you wanna know, tell me, i just have the name of it on my PC notes.
