As a Belgian non beer drinker I still found this entertaining and somehow proud about Belgian beers. 8 down, only about 1492 more beers to go :)

My first thought was “Dayum! SIX in one session?????” Kudos to you that you made it to the end, it’s quite a feat. Belgian beers that aren’t pilseners are strong. I’ve lost count of the non-Belgians I’ve met or organised an outing for who’ve buckled at less. It’s not just the ABV (alcohol by volume) but how you drink them and if you do so on an empty stomach.
I’m a Belgian and I’ve also lost count of how many non-Belgians are surprised that a skinny woman like me can happily down several high-ABV beers without batting an eyelid and without displaying any effects. The trick is to lay a foundation by eating something, and to drink it slowly.
A bit of advice for future tastings:
1) get a glass for each beer you plan on tasting
2) get a glass of water and some bread to cleanse your palate between tastings
3) take your time
4) pour at least 3 beers, preferably all of them and then go from one to the other
5) you don’t need to pour the full bottle
About the art of pouring:
1) make sure there is no trace of grease on the glasses
2) always pour in a WET glass (rinsed in cold water)
3) tilt the glass as much as possible during the pour, righting it only when you want to create the head (the foam). That’s just a smidge more than the thickness of the head you want. When you do, right your glass and pour a bit more aggressively. Perfect head every time regardless of the beer.
Edit: so happy you like Belgian beers! The bitterness comes largely from the hops. The colour is mostly from the malt, from caramelised sugars. So if you don’t really care for bitterness, don’t go by colour. Belgian beers are known for being very smooth and balanced. Balance of flavours is the trick for a beer being pleasant (for any alcoholic beverage, for that matter). You need a balance between bitterness, acidity and sweetness. Some will include alcohol in that because let’s face it, alcohol IS a flavour. One of the flavours needs to he dominant and the others need to carry that flavour and round it out. I’m not a beer brewer but for over 30 years I’ve been making my own meads, ciders and fruit wines. The same concept applies. Because Belgian beers are so smooth and balanced with next to no alcohol burn, they’re known to be so treacherous. They go down easily and then the alcohol hits you. I hope you didn’t get too bad of a hangover because man… you had a lot when you filmed this tasting.
wanted to add an extra tip to your 'about the art of pouring' :
you want to pour slow enough so that there's a constant flow of air goin' back in the bottle and it doesn't go like gluckgluckgluck (this prevents getting too much foam at the start of pouring)
@@dj_genrefluid - True! I do that without thinking…
Never pour in a wet glass. That's the worst thing you can do actually. The foam will stay much longer in a nice dry glass.
@@simeonemascarpone But some beers have a lot of foam, while pouring with the same speed and the same angle. And if you had at least four of them, it is not that easy to limit the foam. A dry glass is good for tasting, but if you have 'no limit' (being at home before going to sleep) it is better to rinse your glass in between. At some moment you can't control the foam anymore.
@@duudsuufd I know what you mean. But you can control the foam with every beer. I've had around 500 different ones and never had trouble with too much foam. Take a Duvel for example. It's a really foamy beer. You can literally pour it like water if you know what you're doing.
That you still can speak after this tasting session is awesome.
Dude! the yeast in these beers is super healthy, Health stores sells beer yeast in pill form. They are probiotics, Thanks for promoting our beers btw.
i would sugest, after half the bottle is in the glas, turn the bottle in a few circles and put the rest in the glas..INCLUDING the yeast.
I always drink it completely. When the beer bottle is almost empty, I drop the last on the foam. There are vitamins B in it, but if you are not used to that yeast, you will feel the need to go to the restroom...
I would say it stimulates the digestive system. For someone who has a lot of 'exercise' in it, it is no problem at all.
Bottums up! The more yeast the better.
Bottoms down please as yeast can cause severe diarrhea.
I always pour the yeast out in the glass. I like the flavour of the yeast with the beer. The creaminess it gives.
As a Dutchie I have to admit, our southern neighbours are insanely good at brewing amazing beer. After having tasted hundreds of different beers I have to say that the Westmalle Tripel is one of my go to beers.

Just to be clear, the yeast in the bottom shouldn't make you sick ( I don't know who told you that). They do however change the taste (more bitter), which is why they are usually left in the bottle so the consumer can choose whether to put them or not.
doesn't make you sick, but can do a number on the expediency of your nr 2's
Sommige mensen hebben darmklachten na het drinken van dat gist hoor. Dus het is geen mythe, maar niet iedereen heeft er last van. Zelf probeer ik het gist te vermijden voor de smaak.

Excellent for intestines! Lol
Het is gezond, maar als je het niet gewoon bent moet je wat rapper naar de grote WC gaan.
For your information, in the bottom of the bottle of a Belgian beer you have yeast beer, who are very beneficial of the intestinal transit. So it is not true to say that you can be seek if you drink it. This is the otherwise. And more over it gave you an additional interesting taste. For the Orval we usually drink it not cold but at a normal temperature. A friend from Belgium.
Holy smokes Charlie, you could have found me under the table after 6 strong beers! Wrt the last one not tasting very well has to with drinking lots of different beers. These all have heavy flavors so your tasting is influenced. Try that same separate and you’ll see it tastes better. Thx for the fun content
Cheers from Belgium! Next time try "La Chouffe" Blonde, my personal favorite.
Nice tasting, the yeast in the bottle is perfectly safe to drink and actually contains a ton of vitamins and minerals! These beers get their carbonation and do their fermentation in bottle like Champagne sparkling wine (called Méthode Traditionnelle), it definitely adds to the flavor in my opinion and we Belgians generally drink it, try it out some day, adds a rich texture and body to the beer, cheers!
So surrealistic to see someone so seriously diving into the world of Belgium beers on the other end of the world in that setting... its just great. And thanks for the youtube gods to suggest it... 😊. And kudos for staying relatively sober after that alcohol ride...
My favorite is Westmalle Tripel, and that’s not a beer man, it’s a meal! 😂
considering Belgian beers : dark doesn't mean "heavy". But if you're drinking all six one after another, you'll definately feel it, lol... Love the fact that you actually test them out ;-) About Orval : there is a style of Orval, you can ONLY drink in one café (pub) next to the abbey, that one is less known, but very very very good.... So you need to visit ;-)

It has to be said if you can do that you’ll fit in nicely with the locals. As to the putting the beer in the glass: start at a +_45 degree angle and pore on the side of the glass. don’t go to fast. Once you have about 2 fingers of collar, hold the glass straighter and pore more to the middle of the glass. You’ll get the hang of it.
I actually felt pretty good the next day 😊
So? What's special about that? Living the life here in Belgium!

That Chimay beer... I went out with a girl, we had quite a few shots and because I'm not used to driniking, I was really feeling those shots! I decided to slow down and to have a beer. I don't know anything about beers, so I told the girl to surprise me, to order one for me and the waitress brought me that blue bottle. As soon as I took a sip, I knew I was in trouble! I didn't throw up, I didn't fall down or make a scene but inside of my head, I was a mess!!
Sounds like an initiation, young paduan
Tasting usually means a sip or two. Drinking to oblivion means drinking it all.
Well done, Charlie! I used to work in a brewery just outside Amsterdam (for connoisseurs: De 7 Deugden). The pay was lousy but the beer was free. Sometimes we had to taste a new brew on Monday morning. As part of the job. 😊 We had some really good special beers but you made a great choice: any beer can come only second to the Belgian beers. A friend of mine lives in Roeselare, near the famous Belgian brewery of Rodenbach. He takes me to his local bar and out of politeness he and his friends speak Flemish/Dutch. After a few beers they switch to their local accent and I'm left clueless. But can't be bothered after a couple of them local bad boys from their local brewery. 🥳🤪 When you come to live in the Netherlands, I'll take you down there. But not by car.
Seeing this, and getting all patriotic and proud of our lil country, I have to big up my hometown's brewery 't Gulden Anker which has produced some world renowned beers over the years. Gouden Carolus Classic and Triple are amazing, they have a range of Top-notch seasonal beers, and their Whiskey-infused is the nectar of the Gods.

Mechelen ❤ Gouden Carolus Trippel one off my favorite beers.
You have a tough job my man. Proud of you that you made it to the 8th bottle.
I call drinking Trappist beers "giving to charity". Read the fine print at the back - most of the proceeds usually goes to fund the Abbey's charitable activities.
Going to remember to tell my girlfriend that one lol 😂👍

When I was studying for my MBA a number of years ago (which you can only do at that university if you've been working in a management position for a number of years - just writing that to let you know that it was a long time since I was in my 20's), some of the face to face lectures and workshops were in Belgium. We obviously had plenty of very nice Belgian beers in the evenings, but didn't stop at 6.
Westmalle Tripel is quite bitter and that's due to the hop. Bitter drinks is an acquired taste so it takes a few to convince the lizard brain that the bitter taste is not bad/off/poisonous. It is one of my favorites.
To convince the lizard brain eh! Astute.
Damn you even got an Orval. It's an acquired taste but it's my favourite beer. That coppery taste never gets old.
Yeah coppery was what I was tasting, it was different than anything I've had but really enjoyed it
I agree on Orval being totally different and an acquired taste! I never really got into it but have always respected it for how different it is.

Greetings from the Netherlands! Looking forward to seeing you visiting our country whenever you are planning to. And I must admit (some Dutchies might be mad at me for saying this) the Belgian beers are the best in the world.
Good to see you mastering the pouring skills after 1 or 2 beers. The golden rule is 'max 2 fingers of foam' but I admit these boys are hard to control. Respect for doing the 6 of them.. some people have not survived 3 in a row :)

Belgian Beer is king. Nothing will ever top it. Rochefort 10 and Westy 12 will forever be my favorites. Immediately after a healthy dosage of Tripel Karmeliet and Trappiste Achel.
Goddamme we always find you the look a like of Jack Sparrow.
Bit after this video you are 100%
Jack Sparrow😄😄
Haha that's great
Try belgians sour beers. It is very surprising. It knocks you out with every sip. Cantillon, 3 fonteinen, Tilquin, Boon...
And don't forget the beerstyle "Vlaams Oud Bruin" (Flamish old Brown) or "Vlaams rood-bruin" (Flamish red-brown), mostly brewed in the western part of Belgium. Some of them are barrel aged and the result is a balanced "sour" with some sweetness, very suitable for food pairing.
Lambiek Fabriek (Fontan-elle/natur-elle are my favorites) easily beats Boon (although I like the Mariage Parfait) and 3 fonteinen for me. I'm not a big fan of the very little carbonation of 3 fonteinen.
Respect for having 6 strong beers in one session. In Germany we have a term to express the mood or feeling to need a rest after drinking - Bettschwere - the literal translation would be "bed heaviness". And at the end of the video you look like as if you have reached / achieved bed heaviness. So much fun to watch, thx!
Have a nice sleep 😅😴
🤣🤣🤣
With some of these kind of beers you're supposed to swirl last bit in the bottle before pouring everything in your glass, including the yeast
It depends. The yeast can upset your gut as it.s often still viable (dormant but alive).
westemalle triple im sure is brewed using black coffee instead of water.
fear last ones your taste pallets were numb already from the alcohol. Nice video as always. Hope the hangover was not too bad. :-) Take care - Looked up info for you on the Westmalle website about the tripel and translate it for you: The Tripel van Westmalle is a clear, golden yellow Trappist beer of 9.5°. The slow brewing process and secondary fermentation in the bottle yield a complex beer, with a fruity aroma of ripe banana and a nice, nuanced hop nose. The soft and creamy taste, with a bitter touch carried by the fruit aroma, has a lot of finesse and elegance. Enjoy the wonderfully long and dry aftertaste.

Keep it at a max of 3 beers at one day next time ! Drink some water in between for taste cleaning (rinse and spit).
I use the Westmalle trippel as a index and compare other triple's to it and rate them according to my taste. Is the trippel more or less tastefull, more or less bitter, more or less sweet, more or less smooth and most important do I like it better or less that the Westmalle Tripel. Double's , blond specials, grand cru, quadrupple's , ipa 's , stout / porter should not be compared to a triple (Tripel), in my opnion.
As a Belgian, i’m impressed you drank 6 of those in a row. Nice !
Helemaal mee eens 😂
Loved it, makes me feel blessed that I can get these beers in any cafe when going out
You can drink the whole bottle. You can drink the yeast. It s not a health issue, it s superstition. It ll make the beer more cloudy.
Rochefort is pronounced as "rosh four". Also heavy Belgian beers always contain yeast in the bottle (not always that much), because the fermentation continues after it's bottled. It's perfectly fine to drink, you won't get sick of it lol. It might be bit bitter if you drink a high concentration of it.
Indeed, best bit was left in the bottle (although not everybody likes it, but getting sick? Well, it might stir your bowels a bit the next day 🤣).
We drink the yeast with the beer, if the bottle doesnt have a "bubble" shape, like Duvel or La Chouffe
Westvleteren 12 i still my fav Trappist, and still on my top 5 overall after tasting 5000+ types of beers. And with foam I find it better to have it in the glass then in the belly and also having dedicated glasses for beer that have only been washed with hot water without soap to reduse the amount of foam in the glass.
I loved to watch this, wel done. Tell us about the hangover tomorrow 😉
Love watching you do videos like these. You always give it your best. Love the happy vibes around 7:10. So very surprised with the great tast of the Westmalle
Dang, Charlie, you shouldn't be drinking those beers like lemonade, you know? Unlike the horse piss that US breweries produce, these are hard hitting beers! You're gonna be so wasted at the end of those 6 bottles!
The glass is fine doesn't really matter if the shape isn't exactly the same. Not having watch the whole video yet but if you drink all 6 of them in the same evening good luck next morning.
And im at the end of the clipp now you drunk to much for a good tasting of at least the last one. It was fun watching you get drunk though but a bit of advise if you do 6 beers like that do it in 2 days or only drink half a bottle if you really wanna taste the last one. I have to say i'm impressed by how well you handled it know a lot of people including meself at the moment that woudn't even drunk the last one..Salute.

Respect from Belgium. You'd fit in here. For a next level experience: in my experience, getting drunk is different for each of these. My favourite is the Chimay Bleu. Getting drunk means starting to filosofise with that one. At least for me. 😋

The Westmalle Tripple had fruity notes you couldn't discribe. They say they have banana flavors in them, to clear that up for you :D
Westmalle is one of my fave , with the correct glas the “ gist “ wil stay on the bottem while drinking , you wont get sick of it .. atleast I never did and iam drinking it every week

Orval is my absolute favourite beer and I still struggle to pour it right, especially if I don’t have the right glass 😅 Many Belgians will tell you that drinking a beer with the wrong glass is evil and changes the taste… As a Belgian, I am definitely a bit picky with my glasses 🤓
Btw, yes, Chimay is a Walloon beer (from the French-speaking part), and so are Orval and Rochefort… Westmalle is Flemish (Dutch-speaking part). Belgium can sometimes be very divided between the different language communities, but something we definitely have in common is beer! Amazing ones on all sides… 😂
Great how you manage these pretty heavy beers so well. As a Dutchman, I certainly enjoy a beer, especially a Belgian one. The dubbels and tripels are quite strong, but definitely worth it. Awesome that you captured this in a CZcams video. If you ever come to Europe, you’re welcome to visit Ghent in Belgium where you’ll definitely enjoy the delicious Belgian beer. But, of course, all of Europe has its own unique and interesting beers. I hope that if you come, there's still something left of the beautiful Europe that is now being attacked from the east by a mafia boss and a sick regime. But rest assured... the beers remain worth it. Welcome to beautiful Europe.
wait did you drink them all after each other? 😆 A real Belgian in making lol
Yup lol
Great commentary on the beers. New sub. As a beer drinker, who really enjoys beers from around the world, I really like the Belgians. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦!
Haha, lovely video! We gotta send you beer more often man
As a Belgian bar tender, drinking beers: the yeast won't make you sick. Example, the Tongerlo Prior is served with 2 glasses. 1 big, in wich you pour 90%, and taste. A shot glass, for the last 10%, have a taste and pour it all together for a new experience. Beer yeast is healthy
Belgians are the master beer brewers .
My younger brother who is a Weihenstephaner "Braumeister" (brewer/brewing engineer) would've smiled at the advice to not pour the yeast. Very entertaining video. Reminiscent of the tasting sessions we had at home when he was a very young micro-brewing enthusiast already, long before he went to Freising to study at the Technical University of Munich. We'd go to Westvleteren abbey (Sint-Sixtusabdij) to buy the beer from which he'd cultivate those strands of yeast that could withstand high alcohol environments. One day he made a special recipe for a large family feast, a Russian Imperial Stout based, over 12% killer of a beer with a deceptively smooth "dubbel" kind of a first taste ("voorsmaak").
We had sort of a bar in the attic that was home to my drumkit and his electric guitars and most of the aunts & uncles came over to have a taste (and then some..). Most of them had planned to drive home after the party. Long story short: all of them had to stay the night 😂 Cheers from Amsterdam!
In the Netherlands we have some good beers but to be fair, the Belgian beers are the best!
About the"cheers", we do the same here in Belgium, but then you have to look each other in the eye
Try halve a bottle double Westmalle and halve a bottle triple Westmalle 😜
Btw: Belgium beers taste way better with the glass from the brand itself.
My home is 3km away from the brewery. 🎉😊
That is no lemonade. Double and triple are pretty strong. Lots of flavour. Normally after two one is getting some tipsy 🤪
Here's to the little joys of life. Cheers, Charlie 🍺👋

In Belgium, the northern half speaks Flemish, not Dutch ! And don't be afraid of the worked out yeast.
Inderdaad, opzuipen en niks overlaten.
Also the wheat wont make you sick if you give the last bit of the bottle a good swirl, so it mixes in. It WILL make you extra drunk tho.... lol
Hey Charlie, So there are some principles to know: Alcohol percentage and color are not connected. The color is depending on roasted malts , temperature during brewing stages and lagering (maturation). The amount of foam is a measure for protein content. So these are all different aspects of making beer. Roasted malts can render more caramelized , sweeter tastes and a dark color. Triples are usually a light golden color and usually a more bitter taste by being more "hopped" Hop was originally used for conservation of the beer. (IPA is bitter because of the hops used in UK brewed beers that were produced to be shipped to India when the Brits ruled there hence Indian Pale Ale )
Hopped (bitter) beers are excellent thirst quencers ! 🙂 I prefer Chimay Blue for winters and a good triple for summer. I never mix drinking dark beers with drinking bitter beers. Mixing different styles of beers can really steer up your stomach... The yeasts are not making you sick but they can steer up your stomach after drinking several beers. ;-)
2 tips: the Rochefort 10 and the Westmalle Tripel.
And we you ever find yourself in Belgium, go on a pilgrimage to the Abbey of West-Vleteren. You will not be disappointed.
