    Every day at the property is packed to the brim. We spent the cold morning hiking the perimeter to get a better idea of the property lines and discovering new areas. Then we get working on the first jump line of the "confidence course". Aaron is the Dirt Wizard and I just follow his lead. It's amazing what he's been able to do so far!

    Hire a couple of Forest Service firefighters when they are off the clock, to thin out the trees. That is what the do a lot when they aren't fighting fires. Arborists will be too expensive. In the mid fall season is the best time to cut because of the fire risk.

    • @TheTennisCompany
      @TheTennisCompany Před 2 lety +3

      I live in Bend OR, there are plenty of FSF that will cut and thin trees in this area. In my area, a licence is required to be using a chainsaw in the mountains (cutting firewood etc..). Just south of Bend 2 weeks ago a fire was started by a chainsaw (400 acres). During the hot dry months of summer, my biggest worry/scare would be using a chainsaw and starting a fire.

      Will Cook, yep. I worked for the Forest Service in Sisters, OR. I was B faller certified by the government. I owned my own saw and people in my area paid me to cut trees on their properties, on my days off. It wasn't uncommon for us firefighters to cut several hundred trees each per day.

    Use marker flags to help sight the line you are trying to build then lay out an old garden hose to help you get the radius of the turns right. If it starts to kink or bend it's too tight and won't have the flow you want.

  •  Před 2 lety

    Don't be afraid to build turns with a larger radius. It's easy to think that the turn is big enough while on foot. Have a 5-6ft rope as a radius guide.

    I’ll second the fire notes. Start clearing out brush, small trees, and lower limbs, so that with luck (and neighbors who do the same) when fire comes, it burns out the understory and leaves the big trees.
    Also, two pieces of advice for when you’re walking out in the steep/loose stuff.
    One, if you’re getting boots full of rocks, shorts and gators is the way to go, IMO.
    Second, for walking on that stuff, keep your weight over your feet - your instinct is to lean towards he hill and maybe put a hand on it, but the smaller the angle between your body and the slope, the easier it is to slip. The other trick, if it’s loose enough, is to take the mountaineers approach and take extra heavy steps, heel down and toe up, or weighting the uphill side of your foot when side-hilling. That puts your feet into the material, rather than on top of it, which makes it way harder to slide.
