- Who knew that a non-expired passport is actually expired? Such a dumb rule. We have to get Abbie her first ID card and they require information from her that doesn't exist...the world just isn't built for people with disabilities. We made it work though and she's official!

I had waited forever to get my license in the mail. Finally, I called and the address was incorrect. Be sure when they ask you to check over your information, you do. The gal had flipped 2 numbers. Live and learn!
Same thing happened to me with my permit, but it was due to telling the desk agent I have autism so it took me a bunch of years to get my plastic card in the mail.
Good thing about that, though, is I ended up getting a Counselor (therapist) and psychiatrist.

My daughter was three when she got her first state Id. Cause the airline said school ids where not valid forms of id. The airline said this and the funny thing is they never even looked at it. And we kept that id current. She is now 26 and still gets an id every time it’s about to expire.

No judgment. Shouldn't they know what your rights are as her guardians? It is important for you and other to not have their rights violated. In some cases the person may not be able to sign or be willing too. The law gave you the right to be her guardians for a reason.
I don’t know if that specific situation is covered in their training. With everything they do at the tax collectors office it’s probably pretty difficult to remember everything about everything.

We have a 2015 Travel Trailer that still has the original roof. I did the roof maintenance myself until last year when I had our RV tech put the Dicor Coating which extends the roof life for many more years. It also reflects more of the heat from the sun which is very helpful here in Texas.

I also got my state ID at 19 I’m autistic too. This year at 20 I got my learners permit. Be aware she might get a jury duty notice because they now go off of state ID and not just are you registered to vote. I was excused from jury duty because I have autism and I find it very difficult to be in a room with a lot of people and other things.
maybe you can teach her to make an X.... I worked in elder care and most the time the patients couldn't sign their name.... just had to have a witness to sign after them....which is anyone that is asking them to sign....lol
I got my daughter Nicole,who is 17,her first ID this year,a police officer in my state said. She needs a Indiana State ID,once she turns 17.

My daughter. To answer your question. she knew her passport was expired and had 5 months to get it before our Europe trip and the week before she had to go to Manhattan to pick up an expedited passport.
I mainly have a ID to get into casinos lol

I tend to do the quick "chicken scratch" signature for a lot of stuff. It's just a squiggly line with a dot and a crossed "T." So it winds up always being different on different forms and 'sign here' line on the machines.

My sister has been in a group home for over 40 years. Same home. My mom visits her once a week due to the location. My sister will do behaviors around my mom and myself that she never does when were not there. They try to recreate the scenario when we're not there but it never works. Sometimes they're positive behaviors sometimes negative behaviors.

@@Cheyenne-vi6fi But 20 or 30 years from now technology could advance, programs for people with disabilities could advance, leading to her own abilities and understanding advancing. No one can see what the future holds.
Not politics, but right now Abbie may understand more then what people watching give her credit for but she may be just unable to communicate that.

I am absolutely shocked she never needed ID before. Is it a disabled ID or a simple state id?
It's because of the expiration time on her passport for travel out of the States. And it takes time to get a new passport...it wouldn't be coming in on time before their cruise. Depending on the destination of a trip you can use a picture ID & Birth Certificate. Which the destination of the cruise they are taking she can use that. Asa talked about it one or two videos ago.
She’s had a passport for 5 years so she never needed an ID
@@fatheringautism gotcha. My kiddo has autism and his pediatrician filled out form for disabled ID years ago. My state does them free-of-charge.

I have cerebral palsy and I was needing a ID and I signed but the dmv didn’t like my signature so they just put unable to sign which messed up me being able to vote so when I went to vote for the first time my mom and I had to fill out a bill stack of paperwork so frustrating

It also depends on the state too In Maine even though your her full guardian she still has all the rights every citizen has, so if she used her device to say she wanted to vote she still has that right. And yes I realize that probably would never happen with specifically Abby but other people with full guardianship may be able to verbalize and understand an election
Voting rights are federal as is guardianship laws in regards to voting. I thought it was universal regardless of the state.
@@fatheringautism perhaps in the instance of voting but some guardians will say no to things that their say doesn’t really matter. I am of course speaking from a group home experience setting. Like if Abby communicated she wanted to do something you guys didn’t want her to do we would have to honor her right to that thing. If that makes sense it’s called Hcbs. I am also getting guardianship of my daughter and we plan to do informed decision making with her as she doesn’t always understand the consequences of decisions. I’ve been a long time watcher and you’ve taught me a lot of stuff to prepare my almost 18 year old and what we want to do with her into adult hood. 😀
I had to take my mom to the DMV to get her Real ID since her driver's license expired at the beginning of June and she gave it up since she's 86. She could not believe we were there for 1.25 hours. I laughed because I thought it went fast for the DMV. In Wisconsin, they mail the license and ID cards to us instead of taking them right away.
We had a hiccup too. I thought she only needed her driver's license, but we needed a bill, etc. too. Luckily, my mom's credit union was next door so I could get her latest starement. 5 minutes later we were back in business.
I need to get my 20yo an ID even though he is in assisted living.

2 comment day: Great job getting the ID. That was great of her school to make an ID for you! It's sort of ironic that Abbie lost her right to vote, while Priscilla is so into voting and being an election judge. I've been one in a different area I lived and am trying to get back into it at my current address/ township. My Mom also did it, so it's in my blood too. Working an election does feel like something good to do and a "civic duty."

We just bought a 2022 Keystone Passport and it has a lot of issues like you were describing
voting laws vary by state, i believe in some states people under full guardianship can vote. my state is is specified in the court order. I had a neighbor under guardianship that could vote.
Guardianship varies per person but voting laws in relation to guardianship are federal.
I don't know how it is with you. Where I live (in Poland), people speak very badly of large families. They speak very badly of disabled children. For the state, such people are freeloaders :/ Our state gives more money to support an alcoholic than a disabled person.

It’s just a normal id, I know a guy at my church who is 40 and has an I.D that says not use for driving. Or something like that
