Genuine discussion: Is the book really that good though? I didn’t really find the House that scary, so (spoilers)
the only way I could enjoy or justify the long unrelated rambles from Z and the inscrutable writing of J along with the unresolved story is to see the book as the House. But otherwise the book was a drag to get through. Maybe I missed something else but I never understood why it was “life-changing” to others.
@@oacmd282 i mean, different strokes for different folks and all, but for my taste I was able to find meaning of it. Reading the book I found myself often mirroring Johnny's behavior, dashing from footnote from footnote, memories of details that apparently never happened, and an undeniable feeling that something more was happening. I also, contrary to most, enjoyed Zampano's ramblings, though either way I take disagreement with any of his sidepaths as being actually "unrelated" to the bulk of the story, to not spoil anything for people passing though ill use an example early in the book, the echoes rant is necessary to properly interpret the book imo. I agree the book isn't "scary" in a traditional sense, but its definitely unnerving, similar to the game "The Witness" it sticks in your brain for a while, making you see or think things that aren't real. Finally Id like to ask at what you believe to be the "end" of the book. The end of the navidson story, Johnny's final footnote telling a story, or is it something in the appendixes?

Lost in the Funhouse inspired roguelike
Imagine a Betrayal at House on the HIll game using this system, 3d with full movement like this, room drafting just like this when u interact with a door to build the mansion, the stats and items/omens/events instead of just items and puzzles. The haunt/traitor mechanic, everything from the board game and then the Haunt is played out in real time, in 3d. oh man PLS let it be real some day. (it could also be turn based like the board game and it would still be good or maybe even first part is turn based and then the haunt is real time)
God I wish I could build a VR game ...

Thanks for making me aware of this game, I played the demo, and loved it and beat what was available. I think there also might be meta-puzzles in the full release, I noticed things like... the drawing room, which had a weird pattern of paintings that might be encoding information in the length of stride. And the security room having word subtraction puzzles that give you letters for some other puzzle I never found. Different words both days i went there.

Goddamn Ryan, you did it again. I don't have the time or money for another fucking awesome game, and yet here I am wishlisting it, you monster. It's like Castles of Mad King Ludwig (a boardgame), which is already awesome, but way more complicated and I am so into it.
Also I don't know anything about House of Leaves, my sister lent it to me years ago and said I should definitely read it, and I definitely forgot to ever do that. If this game is reminiscent of the book, maybe I'll add it to the reading list. For when my daughters are old enough that I have time to read books and play boardgames again. So when I'm 50, I guess 😢
House of Leaves is a very great book with a very dorky fanbase
NL taking an absolute eternity to figure out the three boxes at around 30:00, and then acting like he's an absolute genius for finally figuring it out is peak NL.
Edit: And then insta-calls it a day with 46 steps left and potentially 14+ gold to spend in the shop. Even if the thing that ends in "hammer" for 8 gold *doesn't* get him out of it, he could at least learn what it does. Sure sounds like something that might open up a wall, to me.
Spoiler: No, it just opens locked boxes without needing a key. His real fail was solving the keycard puzzle with the breaker box and then not even trying the keycard door again.

NL is the perfect guy to showcase these games because he resolutely refuses to spend any time interacting with anything or even looking around carefully. Gonna have to buy this...

I playtested this since a long time back and, in fact, there is some deckbuilding in this game. It's just not like most deckbuilders where you build the deck from scratch every run.
Yeah, I think they just mean drafting and light engine building (assuming there are enough rooms with passive effects for that to become relevant) but for some reason every videogame with those elements is just called "deck-building" now. When terms become popular enough they tend to lose meaning quickly, it is what it is. To be fair though I think he also said that before even playing the game, so it's possible someone just explained it poorly and he misunderstood what it would be.
@@TheSquareOnes Yeah, It's hard to describe this game in terms of existing games because its just so different. You have your deck, but its already built, but you can modify over the course of individual runs, and eventually make alterations the base deck between runs. The house itself is the part that's more of the "builder" aspect as you said.
