    Comp cams should make a tappit cam and tappit lifters for hemis with a round tappit lifter. Also and offer a roller lifter with a single thick rod through the center of the roller and lifter arms that hold the roller in place.

    What happens if you use hydraulic roller lifters on a solid roller lifter cam? (Small Block Chevy 355 retrofit)

    I have a 2006 Dodge RAM Grand Caravan SXT 3.8 Liter Engine, With Timing Chain and Roller Lifters. ( I had the RAM Dealer Run the V.I.N.).
    It has a Lifter Noise and I am Not Sure if it is Actually the Roller Lifter or the Valve itself and it has become a Very Sharp Tapping Noise on the Front Left Bank of the Engine, where the EGR Valve is Located. I was Thinking of Removing the Rocker Cover and then letting it Run to See what is Really going on under there. 1. Is this a Good Idea??? 2. Do Roller Lifters make Sharp Tapping almost Sharp Hammering like Sharp Tapping Noises or would it be the Valve itself??? 3. If it IS the Valve then I Will Obviously Need to Remove the Head or can it be Done without Removing the Head and Exhaust Manifold???
    I have also been Told that Lifter Noise is a Common thing on Caravans. I am Not Sure if this is Really True or Not, since My Vehicle is the Only one I have come across that has this Issue. Maybe other Owners are Loaded to the Gills and get them Fixed or Unfortunately and Prematurely Scrap their Vehicles, Due to Misinformation and are Told that they Need a New Engine, when that may Not Really be the Actual Case.
    I Was Told that: "I Will Need to get a New Engine and for that kind of Money, I might as Well get another Vehicle." I was Told to Scrap it. I Don't Think So. 4. I Walked away From ALL that B.S. Crap and am Searching for some Kind of Honest Advice as to what I may be Dealing with here and how much Work and what Tools Will be Required???
    Thank You. COMP. Cams.

    how can you tell if a roller lifter is hydraulic or solid?

  • @nicholassmerk
    @nicholassmerk Před 10 lety +2

    What happens when you need to pound out old flat tappet lifters? Is there a proper way to remove them? That's not necessarily "clean". I tried once, had the top of the engine (only freshened up the top end) full of broken lifter parts. Actually ran great with new lifters and heads.

    • @Compcams1976
      @Compcams1976  Před 10 lety +2

      There is no standard procedure for removing damaged/stuck lifters. If you can get the lifters up high enough in their bores to slide the cam out, removing them via the bottom of the block would be the easiest way. Be sure to use plenty of lubricant on the lifter bodies to help them slide out easier.

      Ok, the engine I had worked on was a Chrysler 318. They were just peened over/distorted from being very old. After I got them slid up, I was grabbing at them with locking pliers and levers. I remember having pieces all over.

      @@nicholassmerk after i got mine slid up i just used a rag to cover the sides of the lifter so i wouldnt mar them and used channel lock pliers, pulled right out on the sticky ones

    Everyone has a different opinion among builders. Most claim for a roller block break in Oil isn't necessary. I know Dad never used break in oil or even ND for several flat cam engines (Chevy 350, 250, 283, Ford 240, 360, 460, 300, etc). We used 30W. But back then oil had more zinc and phosphorus. So the later engines we used Rotella for break-in. But now even Rotella has gone to the synthetic blend and is dual rated. You really don't want synthetic for break-in and you really don't want much or any boron or moly but a healthy dose of Zn and Ph is a given.. the more spring pressure the higher amount desired. I'm not building a big power house. Just a factory freshening. But I don't want to spend $11-15/qt for Motul or Joe Gibbs BR40 or even Lucas break-in or Maxima oil. It's a stock roller cam with factory spring pressure. About the only two things I didn't put back to factory was i chose Mahle Clevite aluminum/silicone bearings and I chose carbon steel top and second rings with plasma moly coating. So I've been researching oil a lot late at night looking for as close to conventional as possible. Absolutely all regular brand "conventional oils" if it's SN+ or SP are actually synthetic blend. Lucas sells specialty conventional oil. Valvoline sells a racing conventional oil... but after looking at it's formula I wouldn't want to use it for break in for a long-term street engine, Royal Purple sells a specialty conventional oil. Basically if it's actually conventional oil it's going to be SM rated or back. SL, SJ, SH, SG, SF or it would have been a HDEO like Rotella WAS. Castrol HD30 is a blend. The Castrol 20W50 is probably a good choice for a flat tappet build. So I threw my hands up and bought some Pro Force SM. Now that's not a great brand for running long term but it's only going to be used for the break-in. And knowing it's not much Zn or Ph i bought some Lucas special Zn additive. Comp sells some. Redline. Etc. I just bought what was available on the local shelf. The Pro Force formula was a lower detergent, lower TBN, and completely conventional. It'll be just fine. If something happens it won't be because of the oil i chose. Nothing is going to happen. One thing I've noticed in all the forums I've read over a great deal of time is there isn't much faith or there's missplaced faith. Faith in a brand rather than the right schedule. Being afraid to tie your shoelaces for someone telling you it's all wrong. It's not about the 3 million to 1 it won't work; it's about it'll work. I broke a socket torquing a head tonight. I was so hot and nearly depleted of salt and minerals i just checked them once more and came to the house. The other one will be there when I've had some protein. I've got other sockets. I'd tell more but I already know what would be thought. 😊

    So there's no need to soak the lifter in kerosene/motor oil overnight before installation?

    • @Compcams1976

      Stuart B Hi Stuart - COMP recommends soaking the lifters in mineral spirits overnight. Oil is not necessary. Hope this helps!

    • @markfothebeast
      @markfothebeast Před 8 lety +3

      Kerosene/Diesel/Mineral Spirits are similar petroleum products. I use whatever one of these are available to clean internal engine parts before assembly (I flush engine blocks with diesel). It helps displace water, debris, and prevents rust. Don't forget the Comp Cams assembly lube.

      Stuart B never kerosene wtf ? Hydraulic oil yes. Rollers there's no need don't put heavy grease because the roller will not roll it will slide. Tip though always use zinc additive in your oil changes
