I personally don't mind using the flex gas lines, but I never run them into the actual furnace cabinet to the gas valve. I always use hard pipe for going into the furnace cabinet connecting it to the gas valve because I have heard of and read reports that the flex lines can eventually rub against the hole cut out where it enters the furnace cabinet and cause a catastrophic explosion or fire. In the mid-1990's this happened a few times (in Phoenix, Az.) and literally blew the roof off of peoples homes, so they finally made it a legal code to run the hard pipe into the unit and never use the flex line. It is fine to use a flex line only on the outside of the furnace, where it is not touching or going through any type of wall or metallic cover.
Thx. for the vids, the information, and the entertainment.

hi! just got a new gas furnace after 35 years. I'm in an upstairs duplex, separate furnaces for upper and lower units. a new digital thermostat was installed in my dining room for it. I have the heat set to 70° - the apt. feels warm enough (I guess) but when I walk past the vents they're blowing cool - almost cold air. The furnace man gave me the "run-down" on how the unit heats up, how it maintains heat and how heat travels to my second floor. I was lost after his eons minute explanation. While I appreciated his knowledgeable attempt at his

That turned out sweet! A starkap on the hot gas vent will stabilize that draft even on a windy day. If someone were to put a piece of paper on the combustion air vent on the top of the furnace when running that situation would be deadly. If you timed how long the furnace took to shut down on the pressure switch, & monitored the ambient co levels around the furnace, you would see why Jim says put dual acting barometric & spill switch to shut it down within three minutes given restricted/misdirected combustion air or flue condition, it is the only way to truly make it safe for all circumstances. With the Baro & ss some miracle machines will rock & roll @ 3 to 4% oxygen, cuz you have control over the vent that sometimes can't remember which way it needs to go. Anyways thanx for teaching, I'm always evolving & learning thanks to guys like you & Jim. Every day's a school day in the ever changing laboratory we work in called the real world!

Ur draft is terrible. Should be -0.01 to -0.02 and stable. Need fix the draft for sure. What cause that swing like that. Maybe wind idk. Yes u right we cant go with gas pressure. I'm in Indiana and we get some harsh winters temperature wise. It doesn't make sense to put a high efficiency unit in strictly for the savings. Same with a high seer rated a/c. The recovery on that cost sometimes can't be attained for 15 years. If you went all out on 3 stage equipment, your repair bills will wipe out any savings you made along the way. Not to mention the reliability of more technical equipment. You open yourself up for headaches.
Again I said "strictly for the savings". I realize that noise, air quality (good aprilaire filter with an 3 phase dc motor that runs on almost no electricity) if you run the motor 24/7, comfort of a more precise system... I do get that. But the majority of the people shouldn't be affording those high end systems. They need to save for retirement so when the furnace breaks they can afford repairs.

steven, thank you so much for your time in replying to my furnace concern. My thermostat is set on "auto" as you suggest and as much furnace guy suggests also. Temp set to 70° and apartment indicates it's 70° by 2 other thermostats put randomly about my apartment. I just can't figure out why "cool air" blows from the vents. It doesn't "feel" like 70° air. Furnace guy says to me, "Don't sit near the vents"..... I thought to myself, "The nerve!" Steve, in your professional opinion, why is the furnace blowing cool air when the cycle starts up again? I'm SO frustrated! I want to FEEL warm air blowing from the vents. Am I wrong? Am I missing something? I am open to listening to reason. Thank you. Steve

In theory, can you replace the gas furnace with a gas furnace AC combo and connect it outside with the fan and tie into the ductwork in the attic and be good to go,, even if the space has to be enlarged for the furnace is this something that's done often to homes with no central air conditioning? Thanks
