My nana and Grandpa are Bob and Nancy Ward, they owned the Bushrod Hall until 2004. We were lucky enough to live with them and it is a seriously beautiful home. I miss it so much. I could name most of the people who lived in the historic homes in the 90s.

Makes me want to move to Tennessee! You have mountains, beautiful small towns and no income tax.

Roane county tax is very high. So much so that it has caused many people to move out of the county. However, Roane county is home to some wonderful people and very beautiful scenery.

Surprise. This is where I was born and Family in Harriman. Have not returned only to drive thru for 50 years. They hid racism even once schools were integrated. My parents of 15 siblings, who have pasted on, were well educated and did well, in their lives, as African Americans. I played in the Band Central Elementary, as 1st African American student, playing the Clarinet, in 1966. Still remember names and students! My favorite friend Becky Bradshaw. Smiths. Tarwaters

Is it racist there like a Sundown town?

I was born in Harriman in 1956. Harriman had a section of the city just for blacks which I lived next to. I grew up with both black and white friends and thought this was normal as I was raised in a nonprejudiced home. I played at my black friends homes just as they played at mine. When I started school, we all walked to school together and back. This was when I first noticed prejudice. I was sweet on a girl named Alicia Snodgress, who happened to be black. I would carry her books and walk her home as far as she'd let me. I couldn't walk her all the way because she didn't want her parent's to see us together. I didn't understand at the time. After walking back and forth to school for a year, my parents let me walk to the Princess theater for dime matinees. Me and friends, both black and white, walked to the Princess together. When we bought our tickets, we would seperate. Blacks went in the door to the right which led to the balcony and whites went left through the main doors. You can still see the door on the right in many pictures of the Princess. Well I had to ask my parents about this. Rude awakening! Harriman didn't always hide their prejudice so well. Especially when a naieve six year year old can see it. Thankfully not all people in Harriman were so bias, as there were some good people even back then.

racism is still prevalent in harriman, mainly among vietnam-age old men hanging onto a thread from the past.
