- Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR) refers to techniques such as yoga nidra or certain forms of meditation that allow the mind and body to deeply relax without actually sleeping. These methods can help improve focus, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being by promoting restorative relaxation.
In this video, Andrew & Rhonda cover:
• How NSDR restores mental & physical vigor
• The study that found 1 hour of yoga nidra boosts striatal dopamine 60% over baseline
• Why people who struggle falling asleep would benefit from 10-20 minutes of NSDR done at any time of day or night
• How NSDR differs from meditation
• If NSDR can effectively "replace lost sleep"
• Why Andrew prefers doing NSDR in the morning
• What happened when Rhonda did NSDR after a night of poor sleep
• The possible creativity & trauma therapy benefits of NSDR

I always make the mistake of thinking that I'm going to get some quick, straightforward answer with these two
You’re addicted to quick, cheap dopamine lol.
How will you buy content or product if they tell you upfront.
That’s why I normally read instead of watch videos. You learn twice as much in half the time.
I usually go straight to the comments, you can usually cut to the chase there. Someone will usually reveal the hook and you can roll your eyes and move on...
Yes, watching them is actually the real answer for going to sleep quickly.

When I was in my early 20's I worked in a large machine shop with non stop noise and loud obnoxious machines. Most of the employees where jerks and it was a hard place to work. We were given an hour lunch break and almost everyone gathered in the break room and just continued the noise and chatter. I discovered that I could sneak off to the very quite warehouse, eat my lunch and then recline on pallets of card board boxes. I discovered that in 15-20 minutes of relaxing, clearing my mind I could recharge myself as much as if I was getting on a full nights sleep. I continue to do this 40 years later with the same results. I have always just called it a nap, but I now realize it is something more.
Well done!!! 💖
I’m a mathematician. I do my very best work just laying completely still in bed with my eyes closed learning very abstract concepts and mastering them.

I can’t speak for Hinduism, but in Buddhism, meditation is supposed to be a relaxed state of letting go where you abandon the process of thinking and doing. In fact the way he describes yoga nidra is exactly how meditation has been taught to me by various monks, and that the idea of using meditation to focus is completely wrong. The goal of meditation is not to focus on the breath. Focusing on the breath or a meditation object of choice is not required, it’s just a useful technique to help you relax if you find your mind is wandering/etc. Another common practice in meditation and very emphasized practice is to have body awareness. Buddha teaches to scan the body and to relax, rest, let go of thoughts and intentions, be in the moment, etc. I’m only commenting this because the pervasive conception of meditation as a concentration practice is the exact opposite of the purpose and essence of meditation
In Western Science (I am Aware that it is Not the Same as ancient teachings), there is two groups of Meditation: open monitoring Meditation (What you have Just described) and focused attention Meditation. Different results, different implications. (Sorry for my german autocorrect capitalizing everything).
@@user-bp2rd3xr1r this is very interesting and I didn’t know that! Itd be cool if Huberman knew or clarified that cause I think ppl miss out by only going into meditation with thinking of it as focus attention, usually trying to improve performance. That’s so cool thanks for that clarification ❤️👍🏾
“Meditation” is a wide range of techniques and purposes and different schools have different philosophies.
Then westerners pick one out and sell it 😂
@@tookie36 literally
That is just one form of meditation. I think a meditation practice needs a combination of concentration as well as letting go. I will say I always found concentration practices to be boring/tedious so I have a bias towards letting go practices. Awakening/Realization can happen in many ways and there are many paths. I find it fascinating and sad at the same time how so many people live their whole lives in a subject/object split. Very sad to me that so many people do not realize their true nature that is right in front of their face. We are so wrapped up in our identities and thoughts, that we never stop, turn within and inquire.
the right gratitude and praying for others
as you settle into bed does much to get
your mind and body rested since
self-centered thinking is often
what makes for restlessness
Great insight. I will give it a go! ❤🙏
well, maybe for some. ADHD is another cause of restlessness at bedtime. To manage, I pace gently inside my house while watching something educational (its not exciting, so I have to press in with my attention). As I pace, I pass the counter with my postits, so I can trap thoughts, organize plans etc. Then I usually can sleep with a relaxed body and mind after a short prayer.

lol. So true
Yes! I was thinking the same thing.
But don't do yoga if you are a Christian. It's Hindu, and not alright with Jehovah.
Science is always behind the 8 ball - that’s why I don’t take people seriously when their closed minds ask for scientific proof over the reality already proven. Inevitably it proves itself wrong 😉😉. However I do have great respect for both Andrew and Rhonda.

I once went to a 10 day meditation retreat. I had to sleep in a room with bunkbeds and 11 strangers. It was a silent retreat, but still I couldn’t sleep, too weird, so I got about eight hours of sleep in 10 days! but I meditated for about four hours a day and I will tell you i left there so transformed and so energized (though I did release a lot of anger had a major healing) but, I never had to make up the loss of sleep. Meditation is amazing especially if you have trouble sleeping!
Sounds like my 20 minute beauty naps in my days off…I can get so much done and I look so refreshed 😊

The first time I did yoga nidra was in my yoga training! Wow! It was freaky but in a good way. From my understanding, it puts your brain into theta.
I call it the fine wine of yoga!
That's the power of ancient Indian yoga techniques (nidras) which will continue to amaze the world as soon as they will discover in the near future. The power of Hinduism 🇮🇳🇮🇳❤️❤️
I've been doing this exact thing for 10 to 15min after work many times when I've had a busy day or lack of sleep the night before when I get home. Except I've just now have seen that this is "a thing" lol
I found the real important part is to lay on the floor on your back, carpet preferably, cuz you need a firm surface to give your body support and set a timer and for that time to do nothing. No phone, calls, texting, talking, nothing.
The goal I always had was to have my body and mind completely resting, no effort being put towards anything whatsoever for those 10-15min. And ya, I agree, it makes a HUGE difference in my energy level and my ability to feel refreshed enough to be useful for the rest of the evening. Some days work better than others but ya, HIGHLY recommend!
i’ve been doing NSDR once a day for a few years now…it’s phenomenal how it can change your mood. ..more energy /lightness of being.
It's called Yog Nidra
Now you haven't. You've been doing yoga nidra. This guy has to make a new acronym to try to claim it as his own. Massive ego.
He mentions Kamini Desai in this video, she is an amazing teacher and author. If you ever get the chance to study with her I highly recommend.
She talks about a very important key feature of yoga Nidra is becoming the container of existence in which everything is happening. This is very helpful if you are practicing non attachment . She is a very special person.

I do yoga nidra. It helps me to use a youtube yoga nidra. There is one woman who has a very calming voice and really helps.
its why getting a massage, especially swedish massage can be REALLY relaxing and restorative. II was told that getting a one hour massage was like getting a good 7 hours of rest. As a massage therapist I am always honored when the client falls asleep on my table.
Massages are wonderful but expensive. I've had many massages over the years from Registered Massage Therapist as I hold my tension in my neck, shoulders and back. Had a bulging disk in my neck for 10 years. Healed itself but still mindful of how I sit, stand and the position of my head and shoulders. If I could sleep at night & remove the stressors in my life it would lessen that by 90 per cent. I had one $100 CAD massage from a young Asian lady and I felt the benefits for 4 days. I don't know the name of the technigue. Is Swedish deep tissue massage? I know naps or resting brain for 15 to 45 minutes helps this 74 year old.
Great stuff. Thank you.

I was having this conversation with myself the other day.... I am not surprised at all.
I practice "Yoganidra" regularly using "Shavasan" (Corpse Pose) & deep breathing and due to my long practice, I can sometimes go beyond one hour. Quite often, after about 30 to 40 minutes, my pulse rate drops to 50 BPM ! It is truly refreshing. I am always fully awake, but my body goes into deep sleep. At the end, I come out of it slowly.
One should be disciplined enough to really practice total lifelessness without moving any part of your body (except the lungs) even a millimeter. You should learn to resist the urges for small scratching or moving a limb, that you would feel initially. Once you overcome the urge for couple of minutes, it will go away automatically and then will not bother you again. Being truly in Shavasan and breathing deeply is the key. Thoughts in the mind will keep coming and going.
Grazie!😃

Meditation is not only focused awareness. In Patangali's 8 limbs of Yoga this is called Dharana. There are two higher levels-, Dhyana and Samadhi. It's certainly not new agie. And intention setting and showing gratitude, you will find, is a very important part of this practice- (which Western science really needs to explore and embrace in a more holistic and contextual way) These three stages of Meditation are the foundations of authentic Yoga and Meditation. Thousands of years of observation and progressive development supports these practices. Western science is just tipping the top of that iceberg. Deep respect and gratitude to ancient Eastern systems of health and wellbeing. 🙏
This is really interesting. I have recently started using my watch to monitor my sleep with the intention of improving quality. I was doing this type of breathing last night and was surprised that my watch interpreted it as my being asleep when I checked it this morning. Unfortunately the practise never did put me to sleep even when it was part of a daily routine.
When I was a child my mother would send us to bed early and require us to lay still and and not make noise until we fell asleep. because I often was not tired I did just lay there and really started to develop deep though and this habit continued into my later years and believe this is a key part of understanding yourself and connecting your conscious and subconscious mind.
We have created a society so separated from our natural state of existence that it needs a research lab to create a protocol for “Resting my eyes”. It is fascinating how the mechanism works but I think what’s most important here is that it works whether we understand it or not. If we could focus our efforts on creating purposeful communities designed around human well being the body will mostly regulate itself. A protocol is not a solution, it’s a treatment for a symptom of a larger illness. We need to focus on curing the disease. We’ve traded life for trinkets
Best, and dare I say, ON POINT comment in here…you perfectly articulated what the real problem is: analysis paralysis!…people overthink everything!…pole vaulting over mouse turds…non sleep deep rest, is basically Hubermans long ass description for MEDITATION!!

I have been doing a technique called Natural Stress Relief (NSR) for many years. In addition to reducing stress, I find myself more wide awake after a session. Each session lasts 15 minutes, during which you are awake and aware of everything that is going on around you. NSR is available as a self study course for a nominal fee.
Meditation is not only focused awareness. In Patangali's 8 limbs of Yoga this is called -Dharana There are two higher levels of meditation. Dhyana and Samadhi. It's certainly not "new agie" and mysticism could perhaps be considered that which we do not yet undestand. It is part of an incredibly detailed and complex framework for healthy lifestyle and living.
And intention setting and embracing gratitude, you will find, is a very important part of the benefits of this practice- ( which Western science really needs to explore and embrace in a more holistic way to beyter understand in context) These three stages of Meditation are the foundations of authentic Yoga and Meditation. Yoga / stretching improves balance and flexibility. This is a good place to start before adding weight training.
Move on to riding a bicycle which helps improve aerobic capacity and balance.
As these improve add some form of weight / resistance training once or twice a week.
The key is to improve balance, flexibility, cardio capacity, and strength in a gradual manner without any injury which will set you back and add frustration.
Quality of life is key. You need balance, flexibility, cardio fitness and strength. Train to improve without injury.
Reducing stress and getting quality sleep thru meditation and breathing exercises should be part of a daily health routine.

meditation is not focusing, its being aware of the awareness itself. what you call meditation is what is called mindfulness. just to clear that up.
No, there are many kinds of negotiation.
The most straightforward way to meditate is to *focus* your mind on one thing to the exclusion of everything else. For example: your breath, or a word, or a sound. As you are doing this, yes, you will become aware of your awareness.

Is it reasonable to assume that this practice could be helpful for those suffering with moderate forms of various mental illnesses such as Anxiety disorder, OCD, ADHD, and perhaps situational depression?
