He can go a 20 flat for the 50 free (instead of a 24 that the producers of the show forced him to go), a 1:40 for the 200 IM instead of a 1:53 which they also made him go slow on, and 30 seconds instead of 38 on the 75. sorry swim1929, you are incorrect. The 50 freestyle world record is over 20 seconds. The world record 200 IM for short course is 1:50, so no, Michael Phelps cannot do 50 in 20.00 or 200 IM in 1:40.

I see the producers likely chose that distance in case anyone checked the results against Phelps' usual 50/200 Meter results.
Not sure if you knew but he actually injured his foot before this and if you watch closely he only uses one leg the whole swim. Thats why he goes a 1:53 . Crazy to think he only used 3/4 limbs and went that time

It's not that he wanted to do the breast stroke, it's because that's the starting position for the flip turn, so he had to flip over from his back stroke and get his arms to his side which looked like he did a breast stoke. Plus he didn't even do the leg movement for a proper breast stroke.
Flip turns actually don't slow you down. You get more speed off a wall than you do just swimming normally, so short course times are actually faster than long course times of the same distance. The longer the race, the bigger the difference between SC and LC times.
Shaq is such a cool dude for this. Like yeah no shit Michael Phelps wasn't going full fuckin speed, if he was really racing with Shaq then he should've been in the Olympics too. Shaq brings so much attention with him due to basketball being so popular, this was probably fantastic for the swimming community to get exposure like this, and he didn't have to do any of it.
