  • In today’s episode I go spearfishing with Justin Lee in Hawaii to collect groceries. During quarantine here in Hawaii we are super lucky to still have access to our oceans to collect food. We have an epic day shooting lots of goat fish and collecting tako (he’e) (octopus). I get some unbelievable film of Justin hunting like a pro. We take the fish home and Sam and I take you through the whole process of how to Chinese style steam the most delicious fish in Hawaii.

For everyone wondering, after about 40-50 feet, there’s enough water pressure on your body that you actually start to become denser. You go from being buoyant on the surface to being able to sink, just another danger when diving and why you should have proper training and take safety precautions.

When you remove the scales start from the head and then move your way back.By removing the first scales, the ones following won't find resistance and go off easier.

That makes so much sense man thanks so much. I struggled so much it was awful. I think leaving it in the fridge for a day or two dried it out also and made the scales harder to remove.

Awesome vid and lots of great info.
Different spearos use different techniques, I agree with Justin’s method of holding the speargun from the middle or closer to the muzzle, (specifically for longer spearguns) it allows him to change direction / point when he spots the fish that he wants and extend it towards the fish, his motion is calm enough not to spook the fish and he seems to do it really well. If u find a spot on the bottom and know that the fish are gonna pass from a certain direction then it’s better to hold from the handle and be ready, but if u are in a spot that the fish can come in from ur 3 -9 o’clock then holding the speargun from the middle will allow u to easily turn it around and feed it out to the direction of the fish.

Thanks yup tons of work. I much prefer to scale in the water but ruins the picture after. And I’m not always sure what’s happening with the fish till we get out. I wish I could help you hands free but all I’ve got is figure out how to hands free “click” your ears on land then click and hum and hold. And repeat. It’s a muscle that needs to be worked out.

You can make a cherreh fish scale with 2 Heineken caps or long board caps screwed into a solid piece guava stick/koa wood. Make sure you use stainless steel screws (lasts longer). Aloha
