  • So in order to get water into the Villa, I had to drill a hole in our wall. Can't lie, that felt quite weird. In the end, it all when quite smooth. Now we can crack on with the rest.
Join me today as I drill a big fat hole in the wall of my basement.

My name is Sam and together with my girlfriend Lyanne, I am on a quest to restore the beauty of this old Italian villa from 1895. Join us as we have to let go of our Dutch habits to fit in in our Italian surroundings, were the word 'plan' gets redefined and our tastebuds are awakened.
The goal of this project is to show that with limited financial means and a lot of optimism we can resurrect the beauty of this abandoned villa in a green and sustainable way. But most of all learn from everything that we encounter and enjoy it whilst we're at it.

Hello, you both truly are unstoppable, I admire you so much that you will go to any lengths to 1, install water etc into/out of this home and 2, to restore this Vila back into the grand working home it would have been back in the day, with all your very hard work and attention to detail I can see this Vila turning out to be not just a labour of love but something quite awesome 😃👌🌈🤟❤️

That air well as you call it sure is handy for hiding the pipework required nowadays. I tend to think of your air well as a gutter to keep water away from the house, but I guess it is both. Good job cleaning it way back. Well done.

Its so nice to see those old houses getting some love instead of just ripping them down and building a new apartment complex without any soul or character. I wonder if you have any plans already for the damaged retaining walls. For me those bulging, crumbling walls seem to be your biggest and most expensive problem. And from the botchy repair done to them, and they seem to be a problem for quite some time already. My first instinct would be to dig down around the whole house and completely rebuild them but you would need a digger for that and a few tons of concrete. I imagine the cost for that would be quite extensive. Also, I am really excited to see what becomes of the garden. I am most jealous of the wonderful outdoors part of you Villa. ^^ Happy repairing and good luck!

You should insulate the pipes up the hill where the valves are. The heavy gauge polythene pipe is unlikely to freeze even lying on the ground. But the aluminium/brass valves would freeze more easily so wrap all those in exterior insulation and tape all over to stop birds from picking at it. You're doing the right thing! All the best!

Hi Sam, from 1 Dutch person to other Dutch couple, please take next advise. The water point in the hill. If you don't want it to freeze up anymore, build a multiplex (betonplex) box over it. And isolate it from the inside. Blue colored PUR plate. Cheap an good solution. I love what you are doing and keep going on . Laterzzzz

Hi Sam, look at the plans for an RRB8L rocket stove. To this type of stove you can add a copper pipe coil and with that distribute heat to your radiators. The stove is very efficient and does not need good firewood. With remains of branches or pallets it works perfectly. Widely used in permaculture habitats

Install insulation over heat-tape on water pipes if you can't build a pump house around your water tank / supply. We had a gravity fed 550 gallon tank 1 mile up in the hills at our Oregon beef ranch. During the winter a 100-watt light bulb kept it from freezing up. ❤️🙏

  • @kareliask
    @kareliask Před 4 měsíci +1

Leaving the tap on to prevent freezing is a good idea, it's standard practice in a lot of cold areas. You can insulate your pipes too, but if it's happening further down the line, a running tap is probably the only option.

double-leaf walls (where an airspace is between the internal and external walls) allow the structure to stay cool in the warmer months and insulate it in winter. I would imagine it would keep the damp out as well

Holy man! What a giant project! I’m very impressed with your resilience. While watching these last two episodes, I swear I would have been kicking the walls many times. You are doing some good work. I really hope you’ve considered using some foam insulation or heat tracing on those pipes. Of course I think of that living in northern Alberta Canada. It was -53 here not so many days ago. My basement shower pipes freeze solid at -35c, and they are buried 8’ below ground.

Hello, it's me again: your language knitpicker.
First of all, though, praise from the bottom of my heart for the way you can work so calmly in such a tight space! My nerves would be jangling and my very being screaming: "Run! Get out!"
And then, while you are chatting easily to the camera, you use such 'typical' (British) English terms like 'hereish' ; lovely! On the other hand, and here it comes, you use lightly where you should have used SLIGHTLY.
Lightly for weight: You jumped down into the air passage, landing lightly on the dusty floor.
Slightly for amount: You opened a tap slightly to avoid the pipes freezing in sub-zero temperatures.
How are the Italian lessons going? Italian is my third language (Sicilian my fourth 😉)

You might want to consider building an insulated box around the connection in the hills before the frost does permanent damage to the valve and piping. I know Italy is generally warm but it would be cheap insurance to prevent costly damage.

Hi, I think it will be problematic to heat the inside the pipe in the introductory well, only if you do it outside. In general, if you put insulation there for the winter and there is a constant water flow, the water should not freeze. I don't know the width of the technical channel where you laid the pipes, but maybe you can fix them with a construction gun?!👍
