When you're young, your youth is your best selling point. Being able to act is icing on the cake and will propel your career. I suppose to get studio's or director's attention, sometimes you just have to bare it all.
I'm for actors using their bodies as expressions in their art but it should be done tastefully. I was shocked when I first watch Gia but after finishing the movie, I think Jolie wouldn't be as effective in portraying the character if she's all wrapped up. Overall, she made you feel for the person in the biopic.

Not so much; first thing in which I saw Jenny Agutter was _Walkabout,_ in which she was nude a few times. She did nudity in many of her films. I met John Landis at a convention and asked how he came to choose her for _American Werewolf in London._
He asked, "Have you ever seen _Walkabout_ ...?"
"Absolutely," I said. "That's when I first fell in love with her."
He smiled: "That's when I fell in love with her too..."
The turning point for Meg Ryan's career was the disastrous plastic surgery, not appearing nude. In general, you can look through this list and say that movies that were successful helped careers and movies that bombed harmed them. Maybe nudity helps associate a particular actor more directly with that success or failure but otherwise I doubt that is particularly relevant to casting agents any more than any other aspect of the role.
I utterly agree with you, it's generally what a movie does at the box office, but God yes, the plastic surgery-and her lies and attitude in response to it. The public also did not like her affair with Russell Crowe or how she treated her then husband Dennis Quaid over it. Add to this her rather shockingly pleased declaration on a talk show and in a magazine that she was not romantic at all and didn't really like the image she'd been making for herself-and got a lot of mileage out of it all these years!!

Eva Green is one of the most underrated actresses. After Penny Dreadful, I will watch anything with her in it. Her elegance and poise, as well as her acting, is just so hypnotizing.

Elizabeth Berkeley got such a raw deal after Showgirls. That movie is much deeper and more substantive than it gets credit for, usually it's just written off as a quasi-X-rated movie that exploits the actors. It's a very introspective and disturbing look into the entertainment industry as a whole and the Las Vegas industry specifically and how the industry chews up and spits out vulnerable women like discount chewing gum.

The nude scene was not the issue that messed up Meg Ryan's career, it was the way she dumped Dennis Quaid for a fling with Russell Crowe that soured people on her.
Back when Quaid was bigger than Crowe, time flies.
Meg Ryan's career stalled when she had an affair with Russell Crowe during the filming of Proof of Life. Her image was the sweet girl next door, and the adultery flew in the face of that. Made it hard to keep the career going. Also, she was nearing 40, which ended her career as the lead in rom-coms.
When it comes to the times Kate Winslet does it, it ALWAYS makes sense for the character in that scene. She's one of those few who only do it when it makes sense for the character in that scene. There are too many who do it just for the sake of doing it, doing it for the sake of trying to get away from a situation where they;re pigeon-holed into certain genres (See Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls), or because they're told "You need to do it", when they really didn't.
And she's kept doing it into her 40s, which I admire. In Ammonite, she did a graphic nude scene at 45 or so, basically saying to the audience, "This is what I look like, you have a problem with that, f*ck you."

Sharon Stone’s Catherine Trammell is one of the greatest villains in film history. With or without “the shot”. Should’ve gotten an Oscar for that role

She was still a little rough as an actress. Over the years I think she's gotten alot better from Casino on to stuff that was more enjoyable to watch because she was in it like The Muse and Sphere, Alpha Dog, Gloria, If These Walls Could, Talk. Her scene with Demi Moore as her hairdresser is fantastic and perfectly cast in Bobby. But she put her all into it for Casino. One of her best performances. But as far as Basic Instinct goes I think still there's alot of passion in that performance and I can't see anyone else playing Catherine Trammell.
I have to admit, Johnson and Dornan faces are rather unmemorable so obviously those that saw their performances no one was looking at their faces lol

Whenever I watch Blue Lagoon, I don't even think about her nudity or find anything sexual about it. Such is the power of that movie that the sombre nature of what is happening is all you are left with. It is a powerful story and very sad. They needed to be naked to show off how people would be without the constraints of civilized society having that peer pressure on them. It asks fundamental questions about how we are. Her performance was brilliant.

"Showgirls" was NOT the 1st NC-17 movie, but "Henry and June" in 1990. I know this because I worked at a multiplex in San Francisco showing this. We had to check ID's and make sure that no one under 17 came in. I also worked at a theater that showed "Showgirls" a few years later. "Showgirls" was actually the 1st NC-17 movie to get a wide release.

Elizabeth Berkeley was the and still is the bomb. Showgirls made all her stock go up to me. She was a teen star that literally showed that world I'm not a teen queen. Me and my fans are not at Bayside anymore. And even now at 50. Her body is insane.
She's also the poster child for what NOT to do as a child star actress famous for a being on a kids show. Her biggest mistake wasn't THAT she did Showgirls. It was WHEN she did it. Going from A-Z right away instead of gradually separating herself from where she started and working to get to a place where Showgirls wouldn't have been as drastic a change for her is what hurt her career.

Showgirls should have been here striptease and what it did for demi Moore or Lisa raye in the players club. But, it was a badly written shock drama.

I don't understand why it's such a big issue. I've bathed nude at the beach many times. Maybe we're more relaxed with it in northern Europe. I remember a classmate telling me, when I was at the beach with my secondary school class, that she didn't find naked men attractive. I should have said: So you think that's why I do it?
Abroad I don't do it unless it's a designated nude beach e.g. Plage Orient on Saint Martin.
The first film I saw Helen Mirren in was the 1985 SF hit "2010: Odyssey Two" the sequel to Stanley Kubrick's hit "2001: A Space Odyssey".
I had forgotten about _Caligula._ I've been a fan of Helen Mirren since first seeing her in _Excalibur._ I'm surprised not mentioned was the graphic nudity in _The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover,_ which avoided an X rating by risking no rating at all, but on its poster, at the bottom, a knife and fork clearly are set up to resemble an X as an x-rating...
I was in love/lust with Helen Mirren after seeing her as Morgana le Fay in Excalibur as a teenager. And then I fell in love/lust with her again when I saw her in RED. Lord that red dress😓😓
The ‘X’ rating wasn’t copyrighted. You didn’t have to submit a movie for review to get an ‘X’ rating, anyone could just slap it on so it effectively meant “Not Rated”, anyway. Lack of copyright is why it was so easily co-opted by the adult film industry and quickly lost all meaning.
Oh, please. Actors have done nude scenes for decades without consequence. Aside from a small group of prudes, no one cares. The bottom line is, an actor's career is only as good as their last one or two films. Also, their offscreen behavior can play a big part; for example if they involve themselves in any controversial issues (overtly political, or doing illegal things), that can be a death knell for their careers. Being butt-naked in a movie is NOT one of those factors.
There are exceptions to every rule (Berkeley in SHOWGIRLS)

I remember being in magazine shop when Charlize Theron appeared in the edition of Playboy that had just come out. One of the clerks noted it in the adult section and sneered that her career "was over." Yeah, right.
It not the fact they did nude scenes in movies that hurt or bustled their careers. It was ether just a bad movie, or they were never that great at acting in the first place for the most part. For others it was something they did off screen that hurt their acting career, like Meg Ryan. She should of left Dennis Quaid first then ran around had flings all she wanted.
Kate is beautiful in Titanic, and the scene is about Rose taking control over her own life. And the treatment of Brooke Shields when she was young was abominable.
Most of these were probably nude but could have been just implied nudity and you couldn't see anything. Probably left out of this list is Denise Richards and Kevin Bacon from Wild Things.
Robert DeNiro & Gerard Depardieu went full frontal for Bertolucci's "1900" (at least in the 5 hour director's cut).

sincerely, I'm tired of actors and actresses that know they will need to show their bodies nude and then complain after the movie.
if you aren't willing to do nude scenes, make sure it's stated on the contract. if they try to force you to do nude scenes, sue them for breaking the contract. an easy win. if you are willing to do them or don't take any step to ensure you won't be asked to, don't complain when you are shown in full view on the big screen.

A dozen old women get together and decide to do nude calendar photos. (It's all politely 'covered up' by flower vases, etc.) But the winning argument among these women was, "You're 60 or 70 years old - we've all had this question, could we do it?" Well now's the time - do it now or forever forget about a nudey photo!" It''s also a powerful flim featuring Helen Mirren but really in an ensemble cast. I think of that film when I think of Jamie Leigh's nude scenes - "Now or never-!"
It was interesting watching In the Cut the first time as it was in a video store in South Korea where you were assigned a room with typically 2 seats. I was there with my friend and his wife. I'd never tried a 3 seat cinema before!

Jennifer Lawrence has done a few nude scenes long before No Hard Feelings. If her fappening leak fiasco didn't affect her back then, nor did her other movie nude scenes. Nothing phase her.
Red Sparrow and Mother also showcased her assets, but it hasn't affected her career either positively or negatively. The rest of the actresses/actors featured in the video had the trajectory of their career affected by their decision to appear nude with the exception of Daniel Radcliffe.

I missed Jennifer Connelly from the list. She started her filming carrer really early, and when she reached 20y in the Hot Spot movie, that was impressive. She became a woman, who could use her naked/half naked body confidently several times in her movies.
My agent told me I had to be completely nude for my first acting gig and it was for a cartoon voice-over part! 😆

Personally I couldn't care less whether or not they choose to appear nude as long as it serves the story of helps build the world. It doesn't alter my perception of them.

American society has this strange hangup with the human body, on one hand you get a movie with dozens of murders and that's okay, but one hint of side boob and the scene needs to get cut if you want a any rating other than NC 17+.
Now I don't believe in gratuitous nudity just for the sake of it, but if the story is worth telling and the scene requires it and the actor is happy and willing to do the scene, then just enjoy the movie and the story it's telling. It shouldn't be such a big deal.

With porn being so easily accessible I don’t understand why we need nudity and over sexualization in mainstream movies. Nudity almost never adds anything to the plot.
Helen Mirren believes she did the first post Hayes Code full frontal nude scene in “Age of Consent” in 1969. Since then she has been recognized as one of the greatest actresses of her generation. Kate Winslet won an Oscar for her performance in “The Reader” in which she appeared nude. OTOH Jason Segel did a full frontal nude scene in “Forgetting Sarah Marshal” that passed without much notice. Hedy Lamar’s full frontal nude scene in “Ecstasy” in 1936 played in “art houses” for decades.
Brooke Shields was not nude in The Blue Lagoon, every one of those scenes is a body double.
Ok, I never saw those movies only heard of darrario and watch 1 movie of her, because her name sounded so cool, and because I heard she has blue eye and is amazing, because she is brunette. She was ok, saw her in the earthquake movie. Still that is a cool name, like Jojen Reed.
Dornan is actually underatted. In the movie about Herve Villecheze he was very good in for HBO and the series with Gilian Anderson where he played a serial killer.
I find it always funny that Americans lose their mind over nudity, but never bat an eye when brain matter flies over the screen. Sadistic brutality and gore is ok, sex isn't. That actually explains a lot.

Nudity in acting is a test, of how much of _themself,_ an actor is willing to put on the line.
Anyone who’s too protective of themself, is not someone who sacrifices their all for the sake of their art and their craft; they’re not as serious, not as committed.
Of course it should fit in with the story, and the artist should vet the work before they commit to it, but in most developed countries other than the U.S. (where film is more industry and less art), nudity is the first step to being considered a serious artist.

I applaud and respect all the actors and actresses who have the guts to say "no" to nude scenes. It's never necessary outside of porn. Hollywood is just gross.

I think this whole "Oh my god they're nude-drama is so american." I feel it is so goddamn ridiculous to film an after-sex scene with girls always covering themselves with the sheets as if they have not just done what they did and it was so embarrassing to show themselves in front of their partner. The same is true for the guy wearing pants like immediatly afterwards. It breaks the immersion. It's like no director filming those scenes ever had sex before. This kind of censorship is just awkward. Worse, making something awkward when it clearly is one of the most natural things happening in the human experience. Now look at me. Making a big deal out of nothing, just like the industry does.^^
There's a limit to what and how they can show something that will affect the movie rating, + at a certain point it starts to cross the line into pornographic. You have to ask yourself as the audience do we really need to see THAT in particular in order to keep up with the story?

I'm surprised they didn't include Lisa Bonet, whose image rapidly changed from playing a squeaky-clean wholesome daughter on the Cosby show in the 80s (back before the general public knew about Bill Cosby's vile habits) to playing a VERY erotic (and bloody) role in Angel Heart.

This list seems incorrect.
If they film is good no one cares if the actor or actress gets naked all not. Besides Helen Mirren and Kate Winslet have got naked loads of time and everybody thinks they are great actresses.
