    Greetings from Omsk, Russia. I am so glad that foreigners are interested in our hockey (KHL, VHL and MHL), just as we Russians are interested in your hockey (NHL and AHL). I really dream that there will be meetings between NHL and KHL teams, especially matches between the champions of the Stanley Cup and Gagarin Cup!!! I support Omsk Avangard. The 1st Avangard attack team is considered one of the best in the KHL, it includes: Vladimir Tkachev #19, Ryan Spooner #51 and Reed Boucher #86!

      Добро пожаловать! I am a big fan of Omsk, that 2021 team is one of my favorite KHL teams of all time. I will try to make a video about them at some point if I am able to find enough footage. Go hawks!

    Great video but one mistake, the Continental Cup is named after Viktor Tikhonov, an ex Soviet defenseman and most of all, head coach of the Soviet hockey team from 1977 to 1991 (& Russian national team until 1994). He was known for his brutal and dictatorial coaching and hated by many players, Slava Fetisov being very vocal about it in the documentary "Red Army". Viktor Tikhonov, the Coyotes player is his grandson.

    • @alexusss1000
      @alexusss1000 Před 5 dny

      Yeah, brutal and all, but nevertheless he made Slava one of the top defensemen of all time...Path to success ain't a cake walk, hey? Oh, and yes... there was one small detail missed....Viktor Tikhonov is THE most decorated Soviet / Russian coach. I think it'd make a whole lot of more sense to name things after HIM and not just another "brutal" coach....Just saying....

Glad I found your channel and look forward to the next videos in this series

      Thanks! I'm glad you found me. I got into watching the KHL the same way through highlights and game recaps. Full games are a bit trickier to find without a subscription but there are some sites that stream games. You can watch both the MHL and VHL on youtube by searching MHL_RU and which is their channel where they livestream games. Its all in Russian so hard to navigate if you don't speak the language but lots of fun to watch! I'll have some more videos about the MHL coming in the next few months.

      I discovered the Russian Super League when the NHL went on strike in the early 2000s. Paid some guy in Russia to send me games recorded on DVD so I could watch the NHL players that went over, and discovered young Russian prospects like Ovechkin, who was then on Dynamo Moscow. Even learned to phonetically read Russian so I could read the backs of the jerseys. Years later, I attended KHL games in Czechia, Finland and Latvia. And coincidentally, married a Russian woman, although that had nothing to do with hockey...

      They used to be. But when they expanded into other countries, they changed to English so they could be more universally read. I actually learned to phonetically read Cyrillic when I watched the old Russian Super League, so I could identify the players during the NHL strike. Actually, with the non-Russian teams (other than Belarus) leaving the KHL, I assumed they might go back to Cyrillic.

    I love the no-draft youth through pro model, you get never do that in Nth America with non hockey markets, they started the draft because of the Habs 😂
    There were some filth plays in there. Man I wish Russia wasn't the enigma wrapped in a riddle, floating in perfume, and served in man's hat, that it is. It would be so awesome if they were a western nation and not always the enemy and we could all play more 🏒

    • @A350Airways
      @A350Airways Před 14 dny +2

      The early KHL had a draft, but it was ineffectual since teams could protect players (3, and, because of Lokomotiv's disaster in 2011, Lokomotiv could protect as many players as they wanted for the next 5 seasons after that) and teams frequently used draft picks on protected players.

      Such a fun league to watch. It gets a bad wrap because of everything that has gone on in Russia but there’s a ton of great talent playing right now and some super passionate fan bases which make watching the games fun.

  • @A350Airways
    @A350Airways Před 14 dny

    Sure, in the early 2010s, the KHL supposedly had a high enough level of talent to fit between the AHL and the NHL, but it shows my knowledge of the league is a little dated.

    • @turk914
      @turk914 Před 6 dny

      The talent is a bit down, as when the Ukraine invasion happened, not only did all the non-Russian franchises leave (with the exception of Belarus), but a lot of foreign players left Russia, mostly to go to European leagues. I'd say right now, it's probably somewhat comparable to the SHL (Sweden) or Liga (Finland).
