Hello. This is Daft Punk speaking... WDPK 83.7, the sound of tomorrow, the music of today, brings you exclusively, the Essential Mix.
Listening to this back in 1997 for the first time must have been 100% life changing.
First time I heard Daft Punk play in the middle of a field, everyone ran to the tent, like their lives depended upon it, memories... (1996 LoL)
Absolutely was for me
Indeed it was.
Ahh I can picture it. Chicago 1997 after listening to them, went to a local record store and got their CD. I was on vacation and I still have the Cd in 2020. Good times!
I recorded it live off the radio, in my living room, with friends and E’s. It’s was fucking epic then and it’s fucking epic now 😎👍🏻🎼🎵🎶🎵🎶

I used to lie in bed on a Saturday night listening to the Essential Mix in suburban Dublin, taping the shows. Trying to stay awake long enough to turn the tape over. Have been listening to funk, groove, house ,techno, drum n bass , trance , you name it...music since the early 90s , throughout the years I have listened to music evolve, and I can safely say I can educate my children's children about the ultimate mix and this is the one they will study and listen too. I remember listening to this set back in 2012, when I was a huge fan of Daft Punk and enjoyed a lot their sets (NRJ Radio, Fun Radio, BBC Radio 1, among others) with just 16 years old. At that time, my mother was suffering for bone cancer and these sets helped me get through such though times. My mother unfortunately died short after that year and these sets became a huge refuge for me.
8 years later, I came across this video by accident and I friggin enjoyed it again. Although I must recognize that I stoped listening DP after hearing "Get Lucky" everywhere (don't get me wrong, R.A.M is an awesome album) and after I discovered some other great electronic artists (YMO, Telex, Kraftwerk, The Buggles, etc.), I still visit DP from time to time.
In the recent months I even re-discovered a new underground house scene thanks to YT channels such as Houseum, so it's really nice to hear funky basslines and TR-909 rythms once again in a world dominated by "modern EDM". Anyway, thank you Daft Punk, you guys were a emotional support for me and I won't forget that... ever :)
Sorry to hear that dude. Glad to hear that you're doing better
@MrChromed thats class brother. Therapeutic for sure. You mother raised a strong as fuck son and shes only in another realm waiting for you. I thought id share the most transcendental artist who I discovered in recent years. There called Bicep and there tunes are sick very powerful transitions. Highly anticipated new album coming January too. Daft Punk n Bicep go hand n hand so i thought id share bro. Some new content for you to digest when ever the time is right haha
The EDM thing is such a joke. I don't know anybody that listens to it at this point

people saying "they'll be back" have no clues about what Daft Punk are made of, and how private their career is, when they say something, it's definitive. They are old, they've been on top of their game for 30 years, they have never lost their characters, and what they were saying in 1993 about themselves in France is still holding, they are still true to themselves, they're not coming back, it's over moby let go, no one listen to techno.

@@nicolaslinsalata8009 I don't think you've got the memo. (It was a reference to Eminem dissing Moby)
@@AQ-wk6lc Why Eminem dissed Moby?
It was the mid 90's. Rave had burned bright and strong for dam near a decade. The people danced and danced. Ultimately the government and music industry would move to oppresse the scene, unsympathetically forcing a critical mass and then of course an implosion. The vibe extinguished itself. Suddenly all that existed was Trance. It left a black hole of unfulfillment. All we could do was cringe and seek. As we picked through the wreckage looking for some semblance of soul, slowly, slowly, track by track, piece by piece, garage started to bubble back to the surface and we thought - maybe? maybe its going to be OK? We started to dance again, and started to think maybe we can live with this?!
It was at that moment Daft Punk occurred.
Nothing would ever be the same again. Worries vanished and the future couldn't come soon enough.
Where are you Daft Punk? We need you.
If you want to run a 4 hour marathon, you dont need to train. Just listen to this twice in a row and it will propel you to the finish line.

Absolutely. They were only like early 20s traveling the world. I saw them live in 1997 at a rave in chicago. I was too young to appreciate it then.

For me Daft Punk was one of the most important Music in my best time in life: 1997. I was 17 years old (german) 5mm haircut, stüssy shirt, Smoking cigarettes, doing graffiti tags and starting to go in clubs at the weekend with a lot of friends. The DJ radio shows we heared in our cars, the air in those summernights, the whole feeling of this time is so precious for me. I will never forget these vibes and the homework album. Some people call it they had an evolution in their music style, others call it they sold out after Homework to commercialism and mainstream music. Well I'm more or less in the second camp, this mix is raw and uncut Chicago meets French touch House music. And listening to this DJ set, I quite can't believe it that these are the same guys who made big money with producing cheesy music. Besides that if there wasn't Daft Punk, I wouldn't be listening to Electronic music at all. So much respect for their legacy!
Cheesy music? C’mon now
@@gregsh8240 It was pretty cheesy let's be honest.
@@dpayO2
Consider it cheesy if you feel so but cheesy music close to perfection. The pinnacle of cheesy music....
I wouldnt consider Discovery and Human After All as "commercialism". Discovery is still house music but mixed with disco and funk. Songs like One More Time, Superheroes, Too Long and Voyager are banger house music.
Human After All is also not mainstream as its the darkest and moody-est Daft Punk album. I can understand if you think RAM and collabs with The Weeknd as them making mainstream music, but Discovery and Human After All arent typical pop music. These two albums still have that house sound to it.

So bloody true. The minimalist trend has got to die..
TheSecretsquirrel222 there’s not enough bass line and funky beats today. Its like high pitched dubstep borderline trance. The mainstream has gone down. The underground still has good music 👀
There's plenty of great club music today. In fact I'd argue there's been a renaissance in house and techno in the past five years and we've seen the rise of refreshing new acts
