Hey folks. We have a review of A Christmas Carol and Voyage of the Damned coming your way in the next few days so subscribe for more festive fun
Voyage of the Damned is my all time favourite Dr. Who episode... I hope you treated it kindly!
wat tuk yu so lung ?
So gassed man
@@mattriusblack2461 he won't sadly
I've always thought this episode is actually quite decent. Some of the performances, especially David Morrissey's were portrayed well.
The biggest question is, why did the Cybermen need a bunch of kids to build the Cyberking? They just stand around and do nothing while a (very small) bunch of urchins with 1/100th of their strength and stamina did all the work. Are the Cybermen lazy now?
Man, RTD was so great with his characterisation. Even in this average episode, the difference with the Chibnall era is staggering
The only reason I dislike this episode is the fact they scammed us out of David Morrissey being the doctor 😭😭😭
Glad we got Matt Smith though, right?
@@Joeistheking oh yeah ofc, but David Morrissey would’ve been amazing
@@realmjumper8154You never know with Doctor Who. We may see him play The Doctor or reprise his role as Jackson one day!
@@realmjumper8154 Morrissey has stated he never wanted to take over a series as the doctor. Which is why he did this one. He isn't much on long running commitments.
Well, Capaldi managed to land the role after playing John Frobisher and Caecillius so it’s not impossible he’ll return.
I think if Jackson was investigating the dissapearance of the children, that could be a good way to tie it in, if a bit obvious.
As well as that, have Miss Cardigan be a rival to Jackson, maybe even being called the master as a misdirect again, could be a fun idea
I love the utilisation of the watch as you know the setup for the joke, as he obviously isn’t a secret Time Lord as they’re not gonna do the same twist as Utopia, so you accept the one off joke and think that’s it.
But then they pull another twist on you and reveal that, actually, while it is a broken and otherwise unassuming watch, it is the key to his identity like the ones Time Lords have because it was Jackson’s watch. It might not restore his identity in quite a literal sense as in Family of Blood or Utopia but it fulfills the same narrative purpose.
It’s actually quite a clever utilisation of it both for the story and in a meta context.
“That was designated: “a lie” is enough to make the episode for me.
One of my favourite Cybermen lines of all time. 😂
And "define the parameters of 'best'"
Wouldn’t of minded Jackson actually being the doctor thought he was pretty decent and his companions on point like Victorian Donna or Jackie 😂
💯 I’d prefer making the companion from Victorian times and not the typical 21st century female.
@@saskruffriders8234 be soo good
Regarding the infostamps and why they wernt used in series 2 is mentioned in the episode. The Doctor says "Why would the Cybermen need something so simple. They gotta be wireless... Unless... They're in the wrong century they haven't got much power, they need plain old, basic infostamps to update themselves"
lol loved the king crimson reference
I do hope the cyber shade’s return. An interesting way of solving the sluggishness of cybermen. Also cool design
They're CyberMEN, why would they call her the Cyberqueen?
God I laughed so hard at "In the court of the cyber kiiiiing"
Episodes like this are why I'm excited for RTD's return. Despite its many flaws, the character writing is so superb, it blows any and all of Chibnall's work out of the water. The stories themselves can be as cheesy as ever and I won't care, I just want the true Doctor back.
One thing that confused me about this episode is why the Cybermen don't have their wrist blasters from Army of Ghosts/Doomsday especially since they're the supposed to be the same ones
You're the Cyber King Charlie.. Yeah!! the Cyber King!
king cybus' new hit record, including such tracks as in the court of the cyber king, and 18th century cyber man
IMO: this was the best Christmas special, second only to Voyage of the Damned. I loved the mystery behind The Next Doctor; the Cybermen are shown as a threat (how they were shown in Closing Time was a joke) and I love Jackson Lake. I really could believe this guy was the next Doctor.
It was an excellent episode and Tenant of course, smashes this episode.
Great work HMM. Your essay on the Next Doctor allowed me to reconsider a lot of themes and positive points of this episode. keep up w the amazing channel and merry christmas!
Key quality thing I love about any cyber man episode is the audio motif of their theme
The way it just creeps in is perfect
Hi harry, merry christmas, wishing you and your family all the best for 2023
I honest think this ep was alright, it a very enjoyable christmas special even with all it flaws.
This is actually one of my favourite, perhaps even my favourite episode, or all time. That maybe partly due to nostalgia, as I have some deep memories buried of watching this episode as a young child. But also I find the mystery of the plot, the setting of Victorian London, and the Cybermen a lot of fun. Yes the Cybermen are a little like derivative robots in the story, and cyberking is a bit over the top. But as a child I found it thrilling, and the classic jokes of the Sonic Screwdriver and TARDIS are classics.
Happy christmas mate
LOVED the King Crimson segue! ;)
One of the ways they could make this episode better: make it a version of the Baker Street Irregulars. Jackson Lake is a version of Holmes, who has an organisation of orphans (the kids who got kidnapped) and a reason why he felt strongly about saving them, not just one of them being his son.
When he lost his memory and took over the Doctor's alias being when his Watson dies.
The shades could be what they actually found in the Hounds of Baskerville and they followed him back to London city.
If you even need more connections, have the woman be his version of Irene Adler who got kidnapped before his identity loss.
The cyber shades have no back story. Then why do I know from only watching the episode not extended media. Why do I know they have the brain of an animal? Most likely a dog or cat? How do I know the backstory? Oh it was in the episode.
I like the episode but it’s flawed. I really wish Jackson ended up saving the day instead of the Doctor, to show that truly anyone can be the Doctor and be a hero.
Glad there's some appreciation for the funeral scene, the first half of this episode is a ton of fun but I agree the second half stops it from being a Doctor Who Christmas Classic
Did It Suck? would also be a good title for vacuum cleaner reviews.
This one of my earliest doctor who episode. Funny how things work out
I really wish we could go back to the surprise era where they didn’t reveal who the doctor was until it happened on show, imagine the surprise on everyone’s face if Peter Capaldi regenerated into Jodi Whitaker & we had no clue
Literally never in the history of the show has it been a surprise. Don't know what you're on about
I would love them to do this even once in the coming years.
This Christmas special was defo mid for me too.. I didn’t like it but I didn’t dislike it either😂😂 2008 me didn’t like it much since RTD was ball tickling like crazy with the whole “will he won’t he regenerate” stuff but it’s grown on me.
Dr Who the centrepiece of Christmas Day tv, these were good times!
I loved this episode and you can't beat a bit of King Crimson
11 should have used a Cyber shade for Handles.
I like The Next Doctor
That Björk reference sent me
This is actually what The governor saw just before he died
I thought it would have been interesting if Lake was 11 having a fusty old fashioned doctor would have been a nice C change from 10
14:24 perfect
What the hell does the word jakensian even mean
7:38. The Doctor explains earlier in the episode that the Cybermen have to stop being wireless due to being out of their own time and needing to maintain their data.
But yeah totally hated the Cybermen voices in this episode. It’s barely improved under Moffat either. Its tragic that we didn’t get a truly great Cybermen voice again until Chibnall’s era (ew)
Everything about Jackson Lake in this episode is great, and everything about the Cybermen in this episode is aggressively mediocre. overall, it's decent.
BENNIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Did it suck, yep. I couldn't stand this episode like the first few times i saw it. Then IDK i watched it again. And went "wow i'm an ass this is really good." Does it make my list of Tenant episode, nope. But i no longer skip it
One thing I've learned from my brief (and, having suffered through the Heaven Sent review, now concluded) jaunt through this channel is that all Doctor Who episodes are far better than random critics who rate things 'out oF tEn' could ever comprehend. I imagine if you tallied up all your scores for each episode you'd find some major inconsistencies in the scores, the whole thing is a waste of time
Harry I’ve been watching your content on and off for a few years now and the conclusion I’ve came to is you simply don’t like Doctor Who, I can’t remember any of these review videos being made without a moan or a groan, we all have distaste for Jodie’s era granted but this seems to be a constant distaste for the show from 2005, I think it’s probably time to move on to making content about things you actually like, just my opinion mate.
