abstract painting with many layers and marks

  • In this video I start with Marks intuitively as always. I use charcoal, derwent sticks and acrylic medium.
I love many layers in my abstract paintings. So it doesn't bother me if the picture doesn't show up immediately. My motto is not to think too long. When it stops, just put something brave in and see what happened.

Totally agree with your philosophy of continuous change and reworking until you are happy with what you see. Each layer is part of the path. The piece that you produced is both beautiful AND interesting because of the journey taken to produce it. Thank you for sharing your working methods. Truly inspiring.

Ah, great advice about the picture not showing up right away. I'm beyond frustrated with a canvas I'm working now -means I'm thinking way too much about a "result".

hello Laura, it is artists life that not all paintings show themselves immediately. If I get stuck with a picture, I leave it there for a few days. Then I look at the picture again. If I still don't know what to do next, then I take a bold step. I take a color and just paint into the picture as if I were starting a new one. Most of the time it gives me a new look at the picture. and so I can go on. Try it out. Kind regards Conny

The music is integrated into my video editing program and in this context it means seclusion. I wanted to google that too because I like it, but I can't find anything about it. Sorry

Dear Sheila, thank you so much for the kind words. I can't tell you what kind of music that is. I have the MOVAVI video editor and there it has music that I can use without fear of copyright. This piece is called 'Abgeschiedenheit '. It doesn't say who the music is by though. KInd regards Conny

i noticed that in the beginning, it was very raw looking, very grungy, is that what you look for at the start then look for a more polished ending based on what goes through your head in the start?

    • @ConnyLehmann

Since I prefer to paint in layers, it is important for me to make the first layers very lively. I then have so many options to react openly. .
I have no intention of painting at the beginning of any picture. I always paint very intuitively and allow everything that I enjoy. At some point I then go into dialogue with the picture and react to what is already there. So the first phase is always the playground, then there is the dialogue between my intuition and the picture.
The only thing I avoid are stopping too long. Then I just paint something brave into it and new paths are open again until the picture is finished.

Dear Paul, thank you very much for your kind words.
For me, painting over it is indicated when I get stuck. Instead of hesitating to continue painting for too long, the best choice for me is to simply change something in the picture. I've learned in my painting career that I shouldn't get too caught up in individual parts of the picture. Otherwise my picture will look cramped at the end. But that is a matter of opinion.
Sometimes it takes effort for me to do that too. However, I know that my best pictures come about when I just keep painting and don't hesitate too much.
      Best regards Conny

That's just it, it's all really good. The marking, color, forms, composition.
I'm inspired by it and I'm applying it to my stuff. I need a wiggly brush with a loose extension. Your colors are the best.
