I think the common mistake pagans in general make, is that your altar has to only fit in with a certain aesthetic, or has to mean a specific thing. My altar is my fire place in my dining room, and I only really picked this particular space so I can light many candles at once and know it'll be safe (some spell work that I do requires candles to burn out completey which can take hours). I simply collect things that I feel drawn to, and other than changing them around with each season/Equinox etc, none of it fits any specific aesthetic or theme. I decorate it with things that feel magick to me, as well as the tools that I need to perform my rituals or spell work. We're all guilty of falling in to the trap of thinking our altars need to look a certain way or need certain items that tie in with each other to be 'legit', but I feel like we should all just fill them with whatever makes us happy and feel connected! My altar looks like chaos a lot of the time, but everything there serves a purpose, whether it's for my work or things that just bring me happiness! Paganism is so varied and subjective, just do what brings you joy and don't worry about what everyone else is doing. If your intention is great, you can't really go wrong! Great video! :)

Having your cat hanging around the beginning of your video, and then you setting up your Odin altar is sort of like "Top 10 Images Before Disaster" energy lmao especially know how much cats love sunlit windows and dangly things hanging off walls but I hope everything stays upright and in place it all looks great!

This has been my struggle I’m so worried to offend the gods/goddesses by setting figures next to others or using the same offering bowl at different times for different deities. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one stressing over that and trying to figure it out 😂

Being an armchair not-a-witch, an altar seems like a no-brainer-- a sacrifice of space dedicated to mindfulness and intention. But I just happen to have a neat 100-year-old secretary to store things like my tarot cards and candles, specimens and artifacts.

When I was in the woods I found "weapons", that I felt, were made just for me, made out of wood.
I also found Thor's Hammer Mjölnir, made out of a tree root.
When you are alone in nature, you have a much stronger connection to the gods and the universe.
Modern civilization is, pretty much, static, that hinders your connection to all things.

I would look at the changing of oath rings or any type of oath jewelry that no longer fits as maybe a sign your transitioning to a new phase and that when you relinquish the oath to that piece it is meant to be past to another person maybe moving into your phase etc. aka you’ve leveled up.

It's always such a struggle cause I start overthinking and moving things around, and it takes me so long to get it done. Seeing that you struggle with the same issue ,that I'm not the only one, and also learning from the way you think and organize your altar , has made me feel better and excited to get mine done .

I personally have two altars. One is inside one is outside. The one outside I use mainly for deity work but also for the land spirits and the spirits of my plants. Inside I mainly use it for ancestors as well as spells and basic magic. I do use it some for deity work but I feel called to do it more outside.

  • @wilhelmhetrick8948

Something I want to point out is it is important to remember tradition but it's also important to evolve. We can look at the limited understanding we have as a chance to evolve our faith to a more modern understanding of the world. I don't believe the gods would be offended by us trying to understand them differently than people a thousand years ago. Odin did once say "I am the All Father, father of all gods. If he worships a god, he worships me." Referring to the fact that he understands that humans are just humans and will interpret him and his message differently. It's possible and even likely that our ancestors got some things completely wrong, just because it's old doesn't mean it was correct.

In the old days most people didn't offer fancy things to the gods. Only very rich people like kings or jarls could afford that. People offered part of their crops or an animal in very special occasions because animals were very precious. Project that to the modern age and adjust it. Flowers from a field in spring, fallen leaves, sticks and stones, nuts/ fruits (use dehydrated fruits to avoid flies), milk, honey or even flavored water with spices that you have in your kitchen. If you live in the countryside you can find bones out in the wild (safety first though, don't put yourself in dangerous situations) . You can even draw something and offer that too. An offering is an offering and if it is done with respect the gods will be happy to accept it. It just takes small adjustments to cater to different gods

My alter? Is the fire pit in my back yard. I venerate the dead, some I knew through life, some I killed in war, so I have a lot of skulls that I found while hiking and other things that are remembrances of the dead. I also have a life alter of sorts that would be the garden area I have, but I don't do much there that would be considered ritual. But these are just me and my practices.

Yet another thing (things, details) that we (both you and me, and some other, "senior" Norse Pagans) have in common! I can't believe how powerful and reflective this is (watching your videos)! It's as if I'm finally speaking to someone, it could as well been myself, who totally and irrevocably gets me!
At the beginning I had one small altar, now I have 3 "main" altars and it's slowly spreading to my entire house! :D
I have the sticks and the cones and chestnuts and bones and pretty stones - all of which I gathered from here and there exactly the same way you did with your Laguz stick, and on top of that, I too have a chest and a "rack" with all the neckleses and gifts I've received from the beginning of my journey,,, you wouldn't believe (if you haven't been experiencing it yourself) at how exactly the same we are and we have even the same weird thoughts!
I too, struggle every time I dust and rearange my altar with the position of the figurines and even amulets and bindrunes... It's insane how we "match", I said this before and I have to say it again, we Nords are all the same, almost exactly the same and we like to believe we're so "different" and unique and beyond comprehension, when even with thousands of miles between us and different skies above us - we're the same :D
One other thing, I'm the only Nord who has a dog, all other Nords own cats, and now you too! I would probably have a cat too if I wasn't allergic to cat fur... How crazy, I feel so warm in my heart

Anyway, I hope your Mary is more respectful to your altar than my boy, Thor. He has knock things over or just actually steal it and hide it. This is something thet may help you guys and Jacob. I heard one of the things you can do if . If you can not use an item or give it to someone who can use it for their altar. You can bury it. I read this in a wiccan book a long time ago because it goes back to the earth being natural. Also I use to watch an old nun on tv, she would take all broken catholic statues and things from people who were stressed what to do with it. She put it in the walls and pillars inside churches newly being built, so it went back to the christian god.

  • @carolynsager6069
    @carolynsager6069 Před rokem

i would treat your bones like people do masks. you have that wall there on the left in your back ground. you could put crooked vine roots on that wall , then put your bones on them. The light against the dark will make them stand out. You could make that whole room your altar having your desk in there too. I have seen this a few times looking at Wiccan videos. What actually excited me, the decor and placement of things. its the new decorating style of like the late 1800's goth type of look. for example. Really old looking trunks in one corner stacked on each other used as a table. Old english cottage style is part of this. antique curio cabinets with old bottle for oils and spells, and books. Old books on their side with crows sitting on them.

If you are sticking within a certain set of deities that all exist in a cosmology then the majority of "alters" being used will reflect that cosmology. Similar to setting up a stage for the gods, ancestors, and other spirits. I find it really importing how an alter is arranged because I see it like a recipe which creates spirit food. You have to know that how you have it arranged will attract certain entities.

    • @TheWisdomOfOdin
      @TheWisdomOfOdin  Před 2 lety +1

There have been many mjolnir pendants found in grave sites of vikings, and the people during that time. Gods like Thor, and Freyr would have been more prominent deities than the war god Odin, to the common person.
So its partly an honoring of the past practices that we know.

@@TheWisdomOfOdin Now that you say that it reminds me that I'd heard that before. I'd also heard it suggested that Odin was more of a God of Jarls, with his exalted status as All-father of the Pantheon. Actually, this reminds me that I want to get myself a new, better quality Mjolnir: one that is more 3D, if that makes sense?

I came to Norse paganism through marriage. But my original Celtics practices merged very easily between the two. Mostly I had a lot of extra feathers and bones.....

here is my ideia: if u don't know what to do or u are having problems to find the "most perfect" altar, just make your house your altar. there's is one small altar in the kitchen, another in the tree in your garden and etc, till u find what is more confortable to u, i personally like to have a lot kkkk

    Jacob,
If your oath ring is actually made of pewter, you should not have that against your skin. Lead is a major chemical constituent of pewter. Don't risk lead poisoning. You could put that in a place of honor in your home, but don't wear it. (LTB, age 78)

My question is how do I find other Norse pagans in my area to find gatherings

  • @BooksAndShitButNotLiterally

Because I'm nonbinary I chose a name, and the name happened to be Loki. It just felt... right, like it chose me. What does that mean?
I'm not currently involved in any religious practice but I have a deep love of mythology, and want to incorporate aspects of many traditions into my life. Am I likely to get backlash from the Norse gods?

I can definitely see Loki being a god who would deal with nonbinary people pretty well. Fun fact Loki is a father and a mother. He's the mother of Odins horse, Slepnir.
Loki is also pretty big on chaotic energy and mischief in general. If you want to do some Loki worship good offerrings I've personally done include tequila, Twisted Tea, and rum. I'm not big on Loki worship personally, I often say things like "Fuck you Loki. Leave me alone!" Because I'm just giving to him to leave me alone.

Right, that makes sense, and I suppose it's worth spending some time sort of brainstorming the possibilities for offerings.
That's pretty funny, I love it. Pretty much echoes the Aesir's attitude much of the time lol

I have strong faith and believe that the gods watch over me and my family though they are not pagans with me. Perhaps you can help in a few ways to become close to the gods. Skol

Hello Norse Pagans. I am currently going to every youtube channel of every religion I can find and asking them why I should join their religion. I will document all responses from all religions and decide which one I will join. If there is no response, I will cross those religions off after 1 week. Thanks!

Also you should set up a shrine to your patron Gods - determined through divination. Not every god will work with you, and you should be making weekly offerings to each deity who walks with you on the appropriate days of the week. In addition where is your ancestral shrine??? Every Asatruar MUST have a separate shrine for their blood ancestors. This is the foundation of every single living ancestral religion - Palo, Santeria, Voudon etc.

You say there is much we do not know and that is true but the world over we can see similarities in the practices of both historic and contemporary occult communities. I know magic is not your thing but much of the information you think is lost can actually be inferred from the knowledge and practices of high magicians, traditional witches, shamans and the like. Not every witch, not every high magician... far from it, but if you find those with deep knowledge, rooted in centuries of accumulated experience, you will find much to enrich your paganism, without feeling any need to become a witch or a mage.

I personally have two altars. One is inside one is outside. The one outside I use mainly for deity work but also for the land spirits and the spirits of my plants. Inside I mainly use it for ancestors as well as spells and basic magic. I do use it some for deity work but I feel called to do it more outside.
