  • Running the Comgrow Z1 setup that was sent to me to try and making an engraved wine glass. The rotary is limited on the size of material but is very effective.

    Thanks for making this video. I totally agree with comgrow making a rotary that can have the rollers widen more. When I work on tumblers, I will cut a wooden ring to place on the bottom side of the tumbler. The i.d. of the ring is the size of the narrow base and the o.d will be the size of the top side of the tumbler. Havent had any isseues when i do it that way.
    Hope that makes sense

      Yea, I am familiar with the method but prefer to not have to use them. I may do a video using the method but in reality, I will just use my bigger roller.

    If you want the frosted etching, use flat black spray paint on glass. Remove the paint and it's just like the traditional glass etching.

    Morning, I enjoyed your video, it was very informative. I have the same equipment and found that if I unstrung one roller to be un-driven by the belt and placed some weight in the tumbler the rotary drive worked without jittering the cup around.

    You just gave me a great idea for another Custom design. New rails for the Rotary that would allow the Rollers to spread farther apart.
    Rust oleum paint with Titanium Dioxide works well too. Just use the Mirror Output toggle in the Rotary Setup if it goes the “wrong” direction…

    And the Comgrow Rotary also works on the K40 with the extra 6-pin to 4-pin “A” cable included with the Rotary (not the “B” cable).

  • @harmonic75
    @harmonic75 Před rokem

    If your worried about the focus you could use an identical glass that isn't coated yet then swap them after setting it.
    Added - the wiggling your getting with the tumbler is because it's tapered - the ends are turning different amounts relative to the rollers. If it was cylindrical it wouldn't wiggle even if it's big. If you add a spacer ring to the smaller end to lift it off the rollers it will track straight (or maybe rest it on the bearings you used for the wine glass). It needs to be the same diameter as where the top of the tumbler lands on the rollers.

    • @TheClackShack
      @TheClackShack  Před rokem

      I tried using the bearings but it didn't work. I may ba able to do it with a taper ring but would rather just use my other roller than chance it.

    please keep us updated on comgrow's response to the adjustable roller. I was just about tp pull the trigger on one of these until seeing this video. the larger tapered tumblers will most likely be a good portion of what I do. hoping to partially subsidize the pittance of Disability I get for becoming unexpectedly disabled

  • @MarklTucson
    @MarklTucson Před rokem +1

    Was it the diameter of the tumbler or the taper? Seems like the taper would cause issues and induce lateral motion. If you were to make a ring at the ID of a part of the tumbler toward the bottom and the OD of the large diameter of the tumbler, the tumbler will rotate uniformly. Because of the change in diameter, the taper is going to induce lateral motion when the piece is rotated. To illustrate this, try pushing a paint can on the table, it will roll in roughly a straight line; now push a tapered tumbler, it will roll in a circular path. This is because the distance traveled by the smaller diameter in one rotation is going to be less than the distance traveled by the larger diameter in that same rotation.

    • @TheClackShack
      @TheClackShack  Před rokem +1

      The taper is a contributing factor but I have done hundreds of the same tumbler on a wider roller without any issues.

    I have just the same one bad part as you mentioned, the four-screw focus adjustment is a pain.
    Other than that I love my Z1 5W (which I acquired a 10W module for it also), with a Comgrow Enclosure, Comgrow Air Assist, Comgrow Rotary, Comgrow Honeycomb, $10 Amazon LightBurn Camera (I think the price has risen to $12 now) with a Custom 3D Printed Camera Mount that I designed in CAD and DIY Fume Extraction let’s me use my Z1 inside the house in a spare bedroom mostly undetected and only my left-door neighbor can smell the 🔥 burn when I’m engraving cause it gets blown out a window on his side of my house.. :-]

    I've got a xtool d1 10 w w/ r2 rotary. I can etch cheep dollar tree glasses pretty decently. I cannot get a good etch on a not so cheep wine glass. Ive been using cold galvanizing spray. Also, i get a good burn on stainless tumblers, but they fade pretty quickly. Buying a $100 spray is a tough sell. Is that my problem?

    • @TheClackShack
      @TheClackShack  Před rokem +1

      Some wine glasses are crystal and not glass. Crystal is much harder than traditional glass due to its mineral composition. I suspect that this is part of the issue. Also, the lead that is in crystal refracts light differently than glass. (just my opinion) The spray is expensive buy I can sell a few pieces and recover my expense.
