Not necessarily. If a patient is able to be appropriately positioned in a slit lamp it is certainly preferred, however, non-ambulatory patients may require examination from a supine position in which case a direct ophthalmoscope would prove useful. In an ophthalmological specific practice it is not often utilized (in my experience)
