There's something about the pixel art in this that I really like, even though it seems pretty simple compared to other classical shmups. I think it's how well they've done the lighting/shading on the metal surfaces of tanks and stuff, normally people make it easy by using flat rectangles with a gradient, or hemispheres, but here they have varied surfaces with really appealing shading. They even make rectangular surfaces better than simple gradients.
Yeah, it's a version European way of doing the art, especially in the UK, which you would see a lot on the PCs of the time too. I generally prefer good quality classic '90s Japanese video game anime/Manga style pixel art more, but it still looks decent here. They were really good at getting that almost rendered look, even though they didn't use pre-rendered images to do so, like Rare did in Donkey Kong Country for example.
This was a great Snes gem and one of my favorite Snes games of all time. Another similarity to Firepower 2000 where you can play as Jeep and Helicopter,from the mid to late 80's in the arcade there was a game called Silk Worm.
Love this game. Using the heli makes it play quite differently too - adds replay value. Level 3 is rough with the heli. TIP - let the big carrier lift the power-up tank - you get more tokens when you destroy the carrier. Really good playing here. This game is tough - plenty of banana skins along the way - it's really easy to screw up the level 2 boss for example.
full run. no deaths. jeep? impressive man! I would always play as the Heli and even then a no death run is impressive this is balls hard. Fun trick, set up 2 player and let the 2p die. you'll get a ton of Bullet ammo right off the bat
You're absolutely right about the difficulty of the stages: it took me quite a while to clear the first three, the fourth was easier - but then I finished the final two _first try!!_ That normally never happens ;) I really like this game though. Plus it gave me new appreciation for the multi-direction shot in Super Aleste :)
What makes this shooter stand out from the other SNES options is its near zero slowdown, even when the screen is crowded. Its hard to play Gradius III after getting used to Firepower 2000.
Something I don't see in many of these runs: Try to wait a bit to destroy any item bunkers that are in a prominent clearing or in the middle of the screen, because a big yellow ship may come in and pick it up. Once the ship's picked up the item container (you'll hear a "hem-LOCK!" sound when it's attached, the same as those flamethrowers that flip out of the ground in level 1), pop it with the most powerful weapon you've got, *quickly*, before it fires back, and it'll drop roughly double the amount of powerup tokens. For instance, you can have the plasma gun at full power (Plasma 7) before the end of the first level.
@@PEG I think it's because of the weird weapon progression perhaps. Once you get Plasma and Bullet upgraded you have a pretty reasonable amount of spread, and then level 7 Laser and Ionic basically deal insane amounts of pinpoint damage for bosses. You also amass enough of the fire ring subweapons that block bullets that you can actually use them aggressively to block stuff by about the middle/end of stage 2 that you can then use the subweapons a LOT more frequently without worrying too much about your stock being depleted at a bad time. The boat's inertia always felt like the hardest part of its level, heh.
Great run, the Jeep is also my favorite, but in the second level boss, why didn't you shoot diagonally? It's the Jeep's biggest strength. Also, letting the ship get the powerup box nets you more after you kill it.
Yeah it really is surprising this type of control system isn't used more. Have you tried Gradius v? That game has a type that is kind of similar in that you can aim the lasers in any direction.
@@PEG I haven't tried Gradius 5 yet, but I have played Gradius and Gradius 2 for the Famicom/NES, and Gradius 3 for the SNES. I found all of those games really fun, so I should probably give Gradius 5 a look as well - it seems pretty cool.
I always cheesed the first level by choosing 2 player game and keeping the helicopter alive as long as possible. As long as the helicopter was alive the crates would spawn much more items.
I was just sittin here playing enter the gungeon and im like what was that game i used to play 20 years ago... tried for so long and finally found it lol this game was so good
I haven't played this game in years, I probably suck at it now lol. The last time I played I did a double playthrough with jeep first then Heli. Surprisingly I got the higher score with Heli but it was so hard. I didn't my first death until the boss battle on level 5 because those stupid Afro lava puffs landed in a awkward position and the game registered it as a hit and I had 12 extra lives too. Never had that many before. I miss this game. Like your retro uploads
the best looking shmup of the early 90's no doubt....only games could compare it to maybe Raptor:Call of the Shadows(1994, PC MS-DOS) and Tyrian 2000(1995, PC MS-DOS)
I envy you that you have a 1-chip conse, mines UN3 model but the checkerboard noise it's apparent when using C-sync, I got a cable from Insurrection industries and yeah it's C-sync and it gives me clean signal, but it has noise produced by the console video chip, and it looks blurry a bit too
You can tell just by watching the video that it's done on a 1-chip SNES? Well you would be correct! I got lucky and found one at a thrift store many years ago, didn't even know it was a 1-chip until I opening it up many years later.
Good programming. It's pretty much a myth that the SNES cannot handle these sorts of games, take a look at Space Megaforce if you want to see a game with tons of crap going on and running at nearly full speed the entire time.
yea space megaforce and rendering ranger r2 along with firepower 2000 put that myth to rest. there's pop'n twin bee as well. darius twin(1 player doesn't slow down), super nova, macross scrabled valkarie, axelay, etc

Firepower 2000 was also known as Super SWIV, and SWIV stands for "Silk Worm 4" although there was never a part 2 or 3.

Beating this game is one of the greatest game accomplishments! I have never done a perfect run as you have demonstrated here!

It is the correct aspect ratio, that's why there are black borders on the sides. The original game is 4:3.
