  • Classic Car Addict is ready to party like its 1989 with this rare '89 Dodge Dakota convertible for sale with 78,089 miles in our Mesa, AZ showroom. There were only 2,842 of these made in 1989. When it first hit dealerships as a 1989 model, you could order the Dakota Sport convertible in either black, white, or red.
    EXTERIOR
The sheet metal appears to be in excellent condition, as does the Exotic Red Clearcoat main color, with Black Clearcoat wheel arch cladding. Dakotas weren’t necessarily rare, but there are portions of the Dakota Sport in particular that would be hard to come by today; including the graphics package, which appears to have no significant issues, and the air dam and Bosch foglamp covers, which were part of the Sport Convertible trim level. The paint is vibrant and appears to be original to the truck.
    INTERIOR
The color of the interior appears to be just as bright and clean as the outside. The seats are upholstered in red maroon cloth, and the visible portions of the upholstery appear to have no tears or damage. The “DAKOTA” name is embroidered on the seat backs, and the seat has a fold-down center armrest. The dash appears to be in excellent condition, with no visible cracks, and no damage to the slide-out cupholder on the passenger side, over the glovebox.
    CHASSIS
The undercarriage show no significant corrosion on the chassis or any of the suspension components. All Dakota Sport Convertibles were equipped with power steering, and the seller’s notes suggest the pump and lines have no leaks. The suspension is original to the truck, and the seller says that other than the shocks which were replaced at 40,000 miles, he knows of nothing that’s been done to it, other than annual lubrication. The wheels are the original cast-aluminum road wheels equipped on Dakota Sport models in 1989, and appear to be in excellent condition with no curb rash or other issues. The tires are Goodyear Wrangler RT/S, sized 215/75R15; later replacements for the original Goodyear Wrangler Radials.
    POWERTRAIN
The Dakota Sport Convertible was available with just one engine: the 3.9-liter V-6, essentially a six-cylinder version of the venerable 318-cu.in. V-8 with the identical bore and stroke, with electronic fuel injection in 1989. The engine bay in the photos looks to be remarkably clean, retaining factory markings and decals on the throttle body and valve covers. The transmission is the Dodge A500 four-speed automatic, at its core an A904 with an overdrive activated by a button on the dash.
