- Outstanding Music Director Jaidev: A Mine of Talent that Remained Underexploited
Born in Nairobi, Kenya (East Africa) on August 3, 1919, where his father worked as an official in the railways, Jaidev (Jai Dev Verma) moved with his family to Ludhiana in 1927 after the death of his father where he began learning vocal music. While continuing his musical training, he also took up a job as a music teacher in a school.
Ali Akbar Khan, the Sarod Maestro was the musician at the court of 28-year-old Maharaja of the erstwhile princely state of Jodhpur. When the Khan’s patron, the Maharaja, died in a plane crash, Ali Akbar Khan asked his young disciple Jaidev to pack up and accompany him to Bombay. At the initial stage of his career Jaidev acted in 4-5 swashbuckling/mythological films, but soon realized that ‘acting’ was not his forte.
In Bombay, Chetna Anand approached Ali Akbar Khan to compose music for his couple of films produced under the family banner Navketan - Aandhiyan (1952) and Humsafar (1953), starring Dev Anand. But both these films failed to click at the box office. Ali Akbar Khan moved on but Jaidev decided to stay on in Bombay and began assisting veteran music director S D Burman. In that capacity, under the Navketan banner, he contributed in landmark scores for Taxi Driver (1954), Munimji, House No. 44 (1955), Kala Pani, Laajwanti (1958), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958) and the song in Agneepath - “Raat Bhi Hai Kuch Bheegi Bheegi”. He also assisted Burman dada in Sujata and Insaan Jaag Utha (1959).

With the film Navketan's Hum Dono (1961) that Jaidev truly came into the limelight, with classic songs like, "Allah Tero Naam", "Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar", "Main Zindagi Ka Saath" and "Kabhi khud pe Kabhi Halat pe". His other big success came with Sunil Dutt star, Mujhe Jeene Do (1963)with melodious songs like "Nadi Naare Na Jao Shyam Pai Padoon", "Ab Koi Gulshan Na Ujde" ; "Tere Bachpan Ko Jawani Ki Dua" ;"Mohe Na Yoon Ghoor Ghoor Ke Dekho" ;"Raat Bhi Hai Kuch Bheegi Bheegi" ; "Moko Peehar Mein Mat Chhed"; "Maang Mein Bhar Le Rang Sakhi Re"
Reshma Aur Shera(1971) was noted for its classic songs such as "Ek Meethi Si Chubhan, Ek Thandi Si Aggan" (lyrics by Udhav Kumar) and "Tu Chanda Main Chandni" (lyrics by Balkavi Bairagi).
Though many of Jaidev's films failed at the box office, many of them, such as Alaap, Kinare Kinare and Ankahee, are remembered for his imaginative musical scores. Jaidev shot to prominence once again with his ghazals and songs in Muzaffar Ali's Gaman like Seene mein jalan, Raat bhar aapki yaad aati rahi and Ajeeb saaneha mujhpar guzar gaya yaaron..
He gave music in nearly 42 films .

Each music director has his own apt for music, but all the music directors were true great in their own fields and together with it is the lyrics which is the soul of the song, I just feel all are great in their own perception, but one thing is the reality that even after several decades the songs will be still remembered whether be lyrics, music director or singer my hats off to all these that we have heard to such melodious songs made by them
You are right Pradeep ji So many of the old school made genuine efforts to innovate and create a unique composition, even though the raaga might be repeated. Further the lyricists wrote with heart for filmmakers who wanted to tell a good story through film.
This is perhaps the reason their music endures even after so many decades.
Today's film makers hunt for formulas, recipes, elements, stunts, props that will fetch them 100 crores in 3 days. So the songs will have ephemeral impact.
Mera favourite seene main jalan nahi aaya Mirza sab. Anyway thanks. 😊
1of the most talented mds of indian cinema. He will alwaya live thru his evergreen music.
😎😎
Jaidev was a legend ,a genius. 'Abhi na jao chhod kr' and 'Allah tero naam' are sufficient to keep him alive for ever though all other tunes are unique.
What a nice tribute to Jaidevji.Ireally like to listen songs composed by JaidevjiAll songs in these videos are superb, takes me to different level.Thank you IMirzaji for the upload 🙏👍
Jaidev ke liye sirf awaz ke Shahinsha Md Rafi sahab ke songs hain Immortal songs , ye kidhar ke bekar Collection utha kar laae ho .
Hey, genius.. This channel is not for you. You have a very high taste to listen to these songs.
Nice presentation cum selection songs giving tribute to legendary Music Maestro Jaidev ji on his death anniversary day.
The great Joydev was the synonyme of soft, soothing, and soulful music ! We owe a lot to this legendary composer for having enthralled us with soulful music of very rich content - lafz, sur, taal, and loy - and - high aesthetic value ! Although the great Joydev Saab had composed music for comparatively lesser number of Hindustani Films than his more illustrious contemporaries like Madan Mohan Saab, S.D.Barman Saab, Naushad Saab, and Shankar - Jaikishan Saab - for instance - among others - he could make an impact on the heart of the discerning music lovers through his path - breaking compositions ! Personally speaking, I consider his masterpiece - "Main Zindagi Ka Sath Nibhata Challa Gaya" - from the film"Hum Dono' - as my all time favourite !
Let's bow our head in reverence to this legendary composer and noble soul for his impeccable track record and monumental contributions to the World of Music !
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤❤❤
Undoubtedly one of the most talented composers industry ever produced. Humble, honest to core, never copied a single melody, genius. A man who can give 8 gems in one single film like Hum dono.. (Abhi na jao Chhokar, Allah tero naam, Prabhu tero naam, main zindagi ka saath nibhata, kabhi khud pe kabhi haalat pe.. and so on) how can he be forgotten/ neglected by this ruthless industry.. his last few films produced some great evergreens like Gaman and Gharonda.. I was fortunate to meet him few months before his death. thanks a ton for sharing this.
A simple unassuming, down to earth sort of human beings with no Air about himself.....a Rarity seen in today's Human beings....Late Shri Jaidev gave Singing Breaks to many in Bollywood like Suresh Wadkar; Kavita Krishnamurty, Sadhna Sargam, Alka with his Popular & widely appreciated programme called "Aarohi" on Doordarshan during the late 70's- early 80's....Jaidev ji will forever remain in our Hearts..🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤
Share more n more every moment, obliged
What happened when you met him?
As a diehard fan of Jaidev, my gratitude for remembering the genius, and for sharing the article on him. Among fantastic compositions, he also introduced Hariharan, Penaz Masani, Suresh Wadkar, Runa Laila and, if I remember right, Chaya Ganguly. Thank you, again, for remembering him and presenting this collection.
wonderful selection of songs. one observation which I would like to make, I have gone through more than 25 music directors from the era of 1949 to 1965. this was the peak use of the accordion in the background scores. and they but I have not seen Jaidev has used this musical instrument in his compositions. correct me if I am wrong.
One of our most humble ,low profiled but a genius of a composer, Jaidev ji's contribution to the music world has been immense.
Great upload.
Thanks also for your valuable information.
Regards
Great 👍 collection ❤️❤️❤️
