Mary Chapin Carpenter was born Feb. 21, 1958, in Princeton, N.J. Her father was an executive for Life magazine, and she spent part of her early life living in Japan. She grew up with a love of contemporary pop hits, although her mother's Woody Guthrie and Judy Collins records gave her some interest in country/folk music. She spent her time at home with her guitar, and her father encouraged her to perform at talent nights.
Enrolling in Brown University, Carpenter earned a degree in American civilization. Between college years she would play local bars and clubs in the Washington, DC area. By 1986, she was a local star, winning five Washington Area Music Awards. She released her 1987 debut "Hometown Girl", produced by guitarist/producer John Jennings.
She returns to Washington almost every summer to perform at the popular outdoor venue Wolftrap.

Reminds me of Summers growing up. Lighting bugs, mosquitoes, drive in movies and wanting to grow up. Now I want to go back.

I can't even imagine how you write a song like this, how you feel those feelings and find a way to put them to words and music so that WE feel them. I always need a minute to take a breath after I hear this one.
25 years ago I saw her sing this on a cold, wet night at the Edmonton Folk Festival and it wasn't just raindrops on my face...
For me ... this is one of those songs that no matter how many times you are hearing it, tears just come. Beautiful...Haunting. Thank You from the bottom of my heart D.

Mary Shapin just love her singing n song writing when she sings she makes one feel
good and relaxed her voice is so soft in tone mighty,would love if she would come and perform in Ireland,,Martin,,,,Kilkenny Eire
so gentle and haunting. Maybe a kind soul will play this for me when im on my last breaths, then I can let go and drift calmly away.
I cannot even say how much I adore this woman.....Loved here for 20+ years now and my respect's evolved into not just for the music itsself, but the woman behind it..here's to 20 more years!

This song is simply sublime...Mary is truly an artist with the voice of an angel, one of those people I'd like to meet and sit and have coffee with. Such grace and style and intimacy demonstrated here. I'm humbled by her music...
