Ironically Australia has a reputation for being pretty fussy about coffee. Back in the , maybe 90s, Starbucks tried to open in Melbourne. The locals where so offended by the quality of the coffee they protested and threw a huge fit about it and the shop ended up shutting down. Though in 2022 I think Starbucks are now in most major cities having learned their lesson that they cant make shitty coffee and expect not to agravate the customers.
I think the episode was more of a satire of America's perceptions of Australia, than of Australia itself. After all, the seed for the whole episode is based on the assumption we Aussies have the same kind of toilet as the US does, and we just don't. (For anyone who's unaware, our water levels are far lower, with almost all the water in the cistern rather than the bowl). And I never fully understood the "giant beer" thing. I think I heard one time it was based on an assumption made by folks who saw our money boxes that were made to look like famous Aussie beers, and which were a foot or more tall. Someone thought they were ACTUAL beers.
I’m an Australian and this episode still makes me puts a smile on my face especially when Homer keeps getting punched by the officer. Plus we are known for our beer typical! Ha ha!!!! 😂😂😂🇦🇺
Foreign embassies aren't actually the sovereign territory of their nations. That's a common misconception due to the fact that citizens of the host country can't enter them without permission
I like how this made me laugh, even though I saw it when it originally aired, and I've seen this whole episode (in pieces) on YT, and I've seen individual gags or brief snips of the espisode before, and I know what to expect... still it's funny! Excellent writers.
Homer: "Look boy, now I'm in Australia. Now I'm in America Australia America Australia." Bart: "We get it, dad." Homer: "America, Australia!" Marge: "Homer, that's enough." As a non drinker in Australia, I can indeed confirm that this is how all bartender's respond when I ask for any non alcoholic beverage. Me: Can I get some water? Bartender: Sure, *returns with a glass of beer* Me: No thanks, I just want water My Brother: Don't be rude, just take the beer (I kid you not, this was a genuine interaction I had) The easy way out of this is the following Me Can I get some water? Bartender: Beer it is! Me: Nah mate, I'm the designated driver Bartender: Ahh, I feel sorry for you mate
Everything else aside, I assume the water costs nothing, while the beer does not, so if someone brings you beer when you asked for water, _you_ are not the one being rude when you object.
