    Kind of sad really. Lost all his children tragically. Lost his wife. And he wasn't popular. And maybe drank himself to death. I am not going to judge him. Sometimes life is hell.

    I had to Google Nathaniel Peabody Rogers and found out he was a very influential person. He was a lawyer against slavery and for women's rights and animal rights.

    Whiskey was a little risky back in the day. Wow, it’s a bit rustic and forgotten. I like the old gothic type fence and headstones. I was a scout and we would take care of old cemeteries that needed cleaning to earn badges or craft points. Thank you for the informative video🤠👍

    I'd read that Franklin Pierce was quite fond of the drink. I'd also read that he gave his entire inauguration speech, some 3300 words, from memory.

    It's a common practice for towns to put flags on all veteran's graves every Memorial Day. Sometimes the Boy Scouts do this as part of their community service.

    Pierce's close friend from college was the writer Nataniel Hawthorne, who wrote the Scarlet Letter.

  • @rhvoriginals3083
    @rhvoriginals3083 Před 3 měsíci +8

    It’s a bit of a misnomer to say Pierce was pro slavery. Like many politicians of his day he felt slavery was an issue for the individual states to address. Politicians of that time were forced to take that stance for federal offices if they wished to get southern support, which they would require to win votes and offices. He was actually anti slavery, in fact he asserted it should be abolished from the face of the earth. Pierce’s biography was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne leading into the 1852 Presidential election. Hawthorne met Pierce at Bowdoin College in Maine, while both were students. They were lifelong friends.
    Interesting fact: Hawthorne had changed his name to escape its dark past. Hawthorne’s great, great grandfather, John Hathorne, had been a leading judge at the Salem Witch Trials.

    Some of the older cemeteries in Fresno County have these. I took my son to a really old one last weekend. We were in the foothills found a the oldest still in use church donated in the the 1860’s and the people who donated the land buried in the old cemetery. I hadn’t been out there in years unfortunately many of the standing headstones had been vandalized and broken.
    Always enjoy your videos.

    I noticed his son Benjamin died on January 6, 1853. That may have been a few weeks before inauguration. That had to have been horrible to get thru that month.

    • @JAG51020
      @JAG51020 Před 3 měsíci +1

      It was actually 2 months before his inauguration, back then the Presidents took office on March 4. It was later changed to January 20 to shorten the "lame duck" period between the November election and inauguration day. This likely contributed to Pierce's drinking problem, as I read that he said that the office no longer meant anything to him after his son died.

    That cemetery ( The Old North Churchyard,) predates America. The City of Concord was settled in 1727 by charter on the authority of the Massachusetts bay Colony as The Penacook Plantation, and Later, The Town of Rumford of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Most of the patriarchs of the founding 92 Families are buried there. Many of the families who founded Rumford had come up from Haverhill and Salisbury of The Mass Bay Colony. Rumford WAS The Western Frontier in 1727-29 when the original town was surveyed and the first buildings built there. The only thing further west was Old Fort #4 on the Connecticut River. Two days and a bit hard March from Rumford. So Called as it was the 4th and furthest fort out from Boston. The original western boundary of the Hampshire Grants was the West bank of the Merrimack river that runs through Present day Concord, so Massachusetts Bay had legislative jurisdiction over the area but the area was disputed between the two colonies. As the Lt. Governor and later Governor of the fledgling New Hampshire colony, one Benning Wentworth had his eyes on the Mast Yards just west of the Penacook Plantation, Tall virgin White Pines which were used for the masts of the ships of the Royal Navy were worth a good deal of money and Benning Wentworth meant to have them and was eventually successful in petitioning the crown to expand the western boundary of the Hampshire Grants from the Merrimack River to the West Bank of the Connecticut River which is the border between the states of New Hampshire and Vermont today. (This makes New Hampshire responsible for the cost and maintenance of all bridges that span the Connecticut River between the two states to this day.) So President Franklin Pierce is in with Rolf's and Walkers, and Osgoods and Bradleys and Greenes and Merrils and Eastmans and Stickneys, all of whom were represented in the first 92 families who settled the Penacook Plantation. Look up Colonel Benjamin Rolf's tombstone, not far from President Pierce. . It is a slate stone. It looks like it was caved Yesterday. There is no locked gate on the Old North Church Yard. Nobody wants to bother President Franklin Pierce. His grave was really run down many years ago and a Boy Scout repaired it as his project for Eagle Scout. It has been refurbished since but it at one time was the most neglected of all the presidential graves. Franklin Pierce rests in peace. He doesn't get many visitors. I'm a writer of historical fiction. Look for me on Amazon. I am working on a book about colonial Concord called "The Rumford Diaries". It should be out in about a year. Franklin Pierce was a Democrat. Republicans had not yet been invented. The New Hampshire legislature has met in Concord since 1782. In 1782 they voted themselves a $100 annual stipend to defer costs of travel and lodging while the legislature was in session. They have Never increased that stipend since it's establishment in 1782. The New Hampshire Legislators STILL Pay themselves $100 a year. Our Federal legislature could learn a lesson from the folks who govern New Hampshire Rest easy Mr. President. It's a good thing they didn't cremate him. He was such a heavy drinker the fire would still be burning.

    Most of the white older stones in New England are marble, a form of limestone. They melt over time due to acid rain. Granite stones hold up much better. Granite only became more widely used after railroads opened up to the granite quarries and granite could be transported over distance. My own marker, a bench marker, came from the Rock of Ages granite quarry in Barre Vermont.

    • @here_we_go_again2571
      @here_we_go_again2571 Před 3 měsíci +2

      Ironically, those who could
      not afford marble markers
      bought (or made themselves)
      a marker out of siltstone.

    • @tommcdonald1873
      @tommcdonald1873 Před 3 měsíci +2

      What is interesting is most of the granite you will find in this cemetery was quarried locally. Rattlesnake Hill is one of the principal quarries that provide this material throughout the country. The Granite State is this state's nickname for good reason.

    In Ohio, our 'rule of thumb' is that all cemeteries open at dawn and close at dusk IF the cemetery has no locking gates.
    Our local, famous, historic cemetery & arboretum has a Greek temple to our local governor and his family. A descendant was interred in the 2010s.
    The flags mark the graves of soldiers. They usually have metal holders denoting the deceased's war service. We have markers from G.A.R. (Covil War), Spanish-American, WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. I have heard about 'War on Global Terror" though have yet to see one (license plate/holders-yes).

    Just a little fyi - those 3 yellow flowers on the Thomas grave at about 10:50 are dandelions and are considered weeds in most parts of the country. In a few days, those flowers will turn into fluffy balls of seeds that will be scattered by the wind to grow more dandelions.
    Thanks for another great tour!

    It must've been hard to lose his kids especially the way they passed. And I've Also heard Pierce is usually ranked towards the bottom of Presidential rankings consistently

    The flags are put on the graves of people who served in the military. From what I understand they are put on by the Veterans Association. The Cemetary where my parents (my father was in WWII) & husband (was in Vietnam) are buried have flags put on from Memorial Day until fall.

    Great as always and always something to learn from you at my age! I love that house right next door to the graveyard...I would live there! How does that cold, wet weather do on your Palm Springs bones? Thanks...as always!

      Hi William, I loved those houses next to the cemetery too. I would definitely live there as well. And I couldn’t wait to get back to the dry desert heat lol! 😎👍

    Nice peaceful old Cemetary 😌 I've heard some about Pierce and his wife watching their son get crushed to death. How horrifying 😢 😳 And he supported the confederacy as you said. He wasn't well liked at all.
    I'm enjoying these. Thanks Steve 😊

    I love these old cemeteries. They do need to do more to preserve the writings on the stones. Thanks for showing and yes please always use your iPhone 😂

    I lived in Concord for 12 years, it is a beautiful city and its final resting places are classic New England Cemeteries. I visited Old North Cemetery several times doing research. I'm surprised you did not visit Christa McAuliffe when you were in the area she is laid to rest about 3/4th of a mile up North State Street in Calvary, Concord's traditional Catholic Cemetery. Men buried at Old North served from the Revolution to the Mexican (Pierce was a Brigadier General in that war) to the Civil War. This included several cenotaphs of men who died in the Civil War whose remains could not be returned home.

      Thanks for sharing Tom. There were so many famous craves that I wanted to visit on this road trip, but I only had six weeks and tried to stay focused on the President graves and as many others as I could, but I still miss so many because of lack of time. ☹️

      @@TheGraveyardChannel Stickney's Mausoleum Grave compared to Pierce's more simple grave is a form of an allegory.

    Lost his wife, lost three kids before age 12, hard to come down harshly on someone seeking ethanol therapy after all that, especially in the mid 19th Century.

    I live in Indiana and most of our gravestones are kind of big but there are are some cemeteries here that have flat graves.Mime won't have a flat stone. Mine will have a bench where my family can sit and visit me.I love all your vidios.You do an awesome job researching everything.

    Watching that man walking his dog in the cemetery, I am reminded when I was a young child how my parents taught me not to even walk on a grave, so much was their respect for the dead. The thought that the dog may relieve himself on any grave is despicable.
