I love the little detail of Toby not noticing because he looked at what they'd actually done... but because he noticed the unused card.

i thought it was because they mentioned, "president" a few seconds before, and human nature being what it is, he began to look for where the president was--like, "don't think about an elephant"

The end of that cold open is one of my favourites. It's right up there with ”Ginger, get the popcorn” 😂

I sense that Sorkin came up with that punchline first and then wrote the cold open around it. Brilliant stuff.

Some of the smartest people I know are the dumbest people I know

I like that both scenes are about very smart people making very dumb mistakes

That’s a pretty good description of the whole show.

This scene just proves that the entire senior staff are occasionally, humanly dumb, and that makes them adorable.

The Sorkin years are basically a screwball comedy

Fun fact: in the season one episode “Six Meetings Before Lunch,” there is a fire in this fireplace.

For a drama series, "The West Wing" had moments of comic brilliance and this was one of them. Expertly written and played to perfection.
We have CJ and the team painstakingly arranging the seating of everyone and forgetting the President.
We have Josh and Sam trying to get a fire going with disastrous results.
Donna is the connecting factor running back and forth between the two and Charlie's comment at the end when waking an annoyed Bartlet is icing on the cake.....

“You’re not using lighter fluid or anything are you?”
“Nooo! No flammable liquids to start a fire, ever!”
    “Got it!”
    “What?”
    “Kerosine!”

Continuity issue. In season one Episode 18 there is a nice fire going in this room with no problem.

“When you have people sitting with the President, there’s excruciating protocol involved.” Yes there is, and that’s why there’s a White House Office of Protocol to do these things, not the press secretary. There’s also an order of precedence, codified in federal law, that would be used to determine where congressional and federal officials sit.
