Just a question, how intelligent would you rate the red fox compared to a smart dog?
They are like little dogs so sad that they have such a hard time surviving in the wild with cruel people calling them vermin and wanting to hunt and kill them. They are so precious and beautiful.

They are one of the most invasive mammal species on earth (humans are unparalleled of course)
They have, along with domestic cats and ofc humans, exterminated the Australian native ecosystem
Also, they are killing off Arctic foxes as due to climate change their areal is expanding northwards. Arctic foxes are smaller.
They have spread to every single continent except Antarctica.
it would seem that cuteness is the only thing that motivates kost people to care about an animal. But you know the animals in the meat inndustry are cute too.

Fun fact: in Russia they successfully bred a domesticated Silver fox. It isn't perfect, because there is only a decade of domestic breeding rn, and dogs/cats had hundreds, but the foxes bred are very friendly.

It's actually not a decade. They have been doing it for 50 years or so now.
Dogs and cats have been bred for domesticated traits for thousands of years. And there is evidence that dogs/an early extinct variety of wolf, started being domesticated tens of thousands of years ago.
Think of the millions of stories, lost to the ages.
That's probably where he came from. That Russian scientist was the only person in history to successfully domesticate the fox

Oh my gosh he is more well behaved then my 6 month old border collie! My dog doesn't shake, kiss, leave it, and he's not good at stay yet. He's not the sharpest tool in the shed! He also hates when we touch his paws lol!

I have a fox. The funny thing about mine, it FARTS continuously!!! The one wild fox that shows up at my country home & is friendly has an enormous flatulence problem!!!

Love it! With leave it, it might help to reward with either a different treat, or to pick up the turkey and feed it to him. I was training this trick with my rats, and they got the idea much quicker when I consistently asked them to leave it in one area, then fed from my hand (it also made it easier to have them leaving food without my hand "guarding" it, as they didn't anticipate and jump the gun on any release cues).
Anyway, great job training your fox! I love seeing people train there pets (especially with positive reinforcement!), it really shows investment in their mental health :)
Shadow The Rat I love rats! Couldn’t have one because of Riot though and between him and my other animals I have my hands full.
But I agree the mental stimulation is great! He usually does much better with leave it but the turkey was so high value I’m surprised he did it at all. I can put treats on his paws and even his nose I just knew he wouldn’t with turkey just yet lol.

I have a wild, but pretty tame, fox that has been visiting me for a year. I don't think I'm the first human in her life, because she was tame from the first day she wandered into my life. She doesn't do tricks, but she is very smart. If I point at something, she follows the line of my point and goes to see what is there and if I tell her "no" when she is doing something I don't want her to do - like chewing the packet that the food I give her came in, she stops straight away. If she comes to visit and we haven't noticed her, she knocks on the door with her paw.

Some states are dumb. As long as someone has proof of financial stability and has researched the needs, let them have a permit and get one. Love how half the ban reasons are "muh potential danger". Any dog can be a potential danger too. Worst ones of all is ones that allow fur farms to operate day and night, but how DARE you want one as a pet.

Wild animals are "not" pets and should not be treated as such. However, If certain states allow wild animals to be used as such. They should be used as companions not a house pet.
Foxes are not pets. Get a cat or a dog. They are domesticated. Foxes are NOT.

An animal is not good or bad. It is just an animal, lead by its instinct or the training humans give to it. Kindness or cruelty are human behaviours.

@@moriarty6677Nah, kindness and cruelty are traits of any very intelligent species. Dolphins for example will take baby porpoises to rape caves. There is no evolutionary benefit to that at all. It all comes down to once you reach a certain intelligence threshhold, you are capable of evil and good. Now can one blame other species for that? No, because these other animals haven't developed the same kind of society we have. They don't have social pressures yet to figure out morality, just what makes themselves feel good or bad

It probably wasn’t. Foxes that were born wild are way more difficult to train. It’s probably a rescue from a fur farm or they may have got it as a kit.

My under the front porch housemates for 2yrs were red foxes. Move to Hancock/Houghton area of MI for a job. Had 800 sq ft cottage on lake. Three days after I moved in four foxes were sitting on long front porch in front of door. Not sure what to do, I stood and talked to them for awhile and then moved toward door. They move just far enough so I could get in. A scene that repeated itself almost daily. They also were often there in AM moving just far enough so I could get out of the door to head for work. Later I realized they were sorta roommates living under the front porch. A very special experience.
