Jesus that escalated quickly...
Had a blast working on this, challenging but rewarding. Thanks for having me guys.
Chris Iddon where are you guys located,
Jesse Permenter The film look are based in Sunderland, I'm just an actor that worked with them on this project (hopefully more).
Thanks for coming along for the ride. Can't thank you enough for your hard work.
Awesome movie! I really like the twist at the ending. The movie did not feel like 3 minutes at all. A very entertaining movie, great job guys!
Thanks for the feedback Vegard!
That was REALLY GOOD. The actor's performance was phenomenal, it must've been so hard to do all that he did and make it feel natural. The sound design also stuck out as really good.
Cheers Turkeyrolls! It was certainly a process for the cast and crew. We have a bunch of behind the scenes videos if you are interested in the making of the film: czcams.com/video/mSbNZNrZHdg/video.html
Actually came here from that
That ending was frightening! I’m so happy to follow along from the conception of the idea to the final film, and the changes that come with it.
Congrats on the film!
Cheers Nate! I hope you stayed around for the credits, you might see a familiar name in there. Thank you for the initial challenge, it's been a ride! With this project, in particular, it has shown us how precious a single word of dialogue can be and how to use it to its full potential.
The Film Look I did indeed! I watched it with my family. They enjoyed the film and seeing the credit. Thank you!
just wondering what a short film like this's budget would be
The ending was great. Great acting too
Thanks!
Wow that twist was so unexpected! I think that made this "good" short film into a great one! You really nailed the film look (from a cinematography standpoint, and the colours were so filmlike, as well). Awesome set and prop design too!
P.S. so looking forward to watch all the tutorials about how you made this one!
Thanks for the feedback! It's good to hear you are looking forward to episodes on this because we've got LOADS. Maybe too many. But we'll play that by ear haha
This is real filmmaking. I've just seen Film Riot's BALLiSTIC and although their budget is much higher than this, the story and acting aren't nearly as good. This is an incredibly powerful piece of work. Good job!
Haven't watched Ballistic just yet so I can't comment on that, but thank you for the feedback! With this, we really wanted to tell a very basic short story that has a big punch at the end. Hopefully have people remembering it and coming back. Cheers!
I agree with you Elliot. The BALLiSTIC was very well made, but I didn't like the story nearly as much. The Asylum Groove proves that the story is the most important!
Vegard Pedersen ryan from film riot is an action director, so he didn’t care about his story as the stunts and explosions etc.
While the story isn't nearly as good, I think balistic's effects are just as cool and worth watching
Exactly film riot acting is poot
Awesome Work Guys!
Congratulations on winning the Rode BEST BTS - EDUCATIONAL (2018) with this film.
Thank you :)
Why do I feel so bad for him, especially when he was calling out for his mother 🥺
BRILLIANT 👏🏽
OMG. That ending was great! Love it!
Cheers!
Well done to the whole crew, shocking ending! 😱
Thanks Scott!
The sudden contrast in everything was very well done.
The abrupt transitioning using water on his head was a great idea imo.
Fantastic short! Was not expecting that ending, very creepy! Loved the dance sequence, something that I’m wanting try out in the future.
Looking forward for what you’ve got planned next
Cheers Teddy! We have loads of episodes coming out soon so stay tuned :D
4 years later and this film is still on my mind.
This was really good, very different, but I am happily surprised!!!
That's good to hear! Different and surprising was our intention :D
Holy shit that hit incredibly hard. Well done lads!

EPIC! Great work. The first location kind of reminds me of an "Inside number 9" episode. They too use crazy story twists
Cheers! Surreal was certainly our intention!
Great stuff! Awesome lighting! :)

nice one guys
damn that was amazing, this deserves so many more views, i hope you guys blow up one day well done
Thanks for the support!
This is absolutely fantastic Rob & Rich! Love it!!
Cheers Max! Any feedback or critique?
The Film Look Sure, I guess I really liked the dance segment but wanted to know who he was or what he'd done to be there or what he wants - Definitely incredibly difficult in 3 minutes, and even harder with no dialog but the story enticed me enough to pose the questions anyhow. Technically it was spectacular as always and felt well thought out.
But great job guy!
Excellent
Thanks Márcio!
Really really loved this, defo wasn't expecting the ending,! - Eliza
Thanks for watching! :D
I have been following your entire process up-till this point. Interesting take, 1 location work is always challenging. Nice one. It left me wanting more

Amazing! I am in Film School and working on an assignment consisting on a Nonverbal Scene and this was so helpful, thanks!!
That's great! Best o' luck Liliane! We have a video breaking down our strategy for the lack of dialogue in this film. Might be helpful for you! czcams.com/video/qzYD463LbWU/video.html
Just discovered your channel and I think you are all an amazing group of talented artists.

Awesome! Welcome to the channel!
I love the plot twist !
Cheers!
Super pumped for the BTS
great work you guys
Wish to create something as cool someday ( very soon )
Appreciate the support Hady!
It reminded me a bit of the Ambrose Bierce story, "Incident on Owl Creek Bridge." Good work.
Will have to look that up!
Donald W. Meyers came here to say this, immediately reminded me of An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge and also the movie Stay.
This is very well made. Loved the eiditing in particular. I was wondering why you post your work here when you could submit it onto the festival circuit?
We will be submitting it to some festivals, obviously not ones which require exclusive screening. But most short film festivals will invite even those which are already online which is great because it means we can get the film online, show the audience, and start making episodes about how we made the film and mistakes and lessons we learned.
I really loved the ending
Thanks, it got a little dark, but we like the contrast between the two scenes.
It really did and now i can't wait for another amazing one
We have loads more videos coming out about how we made this one, but we are currently working on the next film too.
can't wait
really great movie
awesome👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching :)
I liked it.
Thanks for watching :)
I love you!
Love you too mate ❤
😳...
Wow. This comment is probably late but I must say that is really amazing.
Cheers Ramiru!
How the heck did you get that shot at 1:25 ??
Jesse Permenter they got a gimbal so I suppose they used that
A filmmaker friend of ours is a Steadicam operator. Our BTS episode coming out on Sunday will feature the shot. Stay tuned!
The Film Look very interested in that BTS. I absolutely love the lighting and feel of the chair room
I think that besides the idea of the ending, which is really cool, it's kinda taking me out of what is going on with in the shortfilm.
It was really beatifull that this cleaning guy starts to dance with his mopping stick, and it was even more interesting how he reacted to the idea of him falling with the bucket and not really understanding as an spectator if his having an idea that idea is whats giving life to his mopping stick or what!
Then the ending kinda ruin the whole point of what was a beatifull setup to a gag or just a really nice story of a man who dream with the love of his life.
I ended up liking more the idea of him having like this romantic thing than the electric chair, which was a little too much maybe for all the idea of the short
You make a really good point and thank you for the feedback. Really happy you mentioned a romantic relationship with the mop; that was our full intention for the first half. The contrast to the 2nd half of the film was deliberate, but I do see how it almost becomes a completely different film.
The Film Look maybe it needed some litle things that made you think that something was off, besides the song!
czcams.com/video/CuorsbghT5M/video.html
This is really interesting to see! :)
Bearing in mind it could just be me, I didn't get the story at all, even after wtaching your explanations on other videos... It opens with someone moving furniture, and also painting. But when he starts cleaning, we understand it's a dancing floor (so what were the armchair and cushions doing there???) and his painting something on the table isn't related to anything. I was lost, but tried to hang on.
It looks like there was a party at the asylum (we know it's an asylum because of the title of the film), and by his attitude, the "mop guy" is obviously a patient here. BTW, you had him wear a blue shirt to show he's independant, like J. Nicholson's character - but the latter was sane (allowing him to be independant) whereas the former in your film obviously belongs in an asylum.
Then the final "twist". At first, I thought he was receiving electric shocks as a therapy. It didn't make much sense (nothing really lead to that), but it was consistent with the theme. But no, is was really an execution, and I was completely lost.
What was the story? Even the "it was just a dream" end twist didn't help me understand, as I can't see what that dream could have been about. Not about freedom -he's in an asylum, he's working and not a glamourous task, and he's dreaming inside the dream (that he's dancing)...!?- not about healing, not about the crime that gets him the electric chair... So ???
That's a big negative, and I'm sorry because the rest deserves only congratulations: nice acting, nice set, nice editing, etc. I won't expand on that because others already have, and I agree with them wholeheartedly.
Thanks for the feedback and honesty. The whole film is essentially a mishmash of different ideas and experimenting with what works and doesn't work on screen. With keeping it short, cheap, and the challenge of only a single word of dialogue, we wanted to simply set a scene, drop in a character, give him something to do, and go out with a bang. From what you've mentioned, I do see some inconsistencies and a few plot holes here and there. Thank you for making me aware of them. These are definitely things which we will be avoiding in the next film. This was was a strange project, very different from the norm, because of its false sense of reality. When trying to find a balance on that note we obviously didn't fall on the right side of that balance for some.
The story makes perfect sense. The opening is a montage of him making the dance hall more clear, as he moves disused furniture out of the way. Why was it there? Well it's an old looking building, and it could easily have been used for many different occasions. Secondly he's not painting on a table, at least it doesn't look like he is. But what he is painting is the big banner that you see in the background. It's obvious that he's clearing the space and setting up for what we think is going to be some kind of big event. The event is then revealed to be his own execution. The whole piece is essentially supposed to be a man's last thoughts in his own imagination, before he is executed. That's my interpretation of it at least.
THANK YOU...for this as well as for the whole film academy people from asylums cannot afford. Tell me if you want to hear a really moving really true story of the type shown in the film. Maybe you could narrate my life in three more minutes like the shown ones as well...really, I understand this plot. :-) kind regards!
Is the song inspired by American Horror Story Asylum's Dominique?
We would have to say no, because we have not seen American Horror Story. Herd it's good though.
Can u share a script for this film? Thanks
We have 1st and Final versions of the script in our Asylum Groove film pack. It also comes with a bunch of other goodies: www.thefilmlook.com/store/the-asylum-groove-with-special-features
Awesome guys. Can I recommend a new poster please using a still from 01:34? That is all, thank you :)
If we hadn't just ordered the posters that would be the shoot we would use.
Song??

@@TheFilmLook Thank you!!
Nice job. I found this from a blog post about screenwriting. One thing that is bothering me is why would someone in an asylum be in an electric chair? Are there countries where they kill the mentally ill? Shock treatment has gone in and out of use for quite a long time but I don't know of electric chairs in use. That just left me confused. Otherwise, it was a good exercise.
What we really wanted to get out of this film was to attempt to create a lovable, and for the most part, mute protagonist - get the audience comfortable, and turn it upside down towards the end. We needed something brutal and disturbing, and capital punishment seemed to fit the bill. The idea of the chair was to imply this guy had done something really bad, and the audience could fill in that sadistic gap. Maybe it would have worked better if he'd have been inside a prison rather than an Asylum.
Hahah le premier film francais

us.audionetwork.com/browse/m/track/mon-prince-charmant-vintage-6-30_1010895
so I'm guessing this is Texas...
What? Maybe it's just me but I don't get it, why is he in the chair?
We wanted to imply the protagonist had done something punishable by execution, and we wanted the audience to fill in that gap.
did you submit this to any festivals? also I think adding more film grain would've brought the cinematography up a few notches
We sent it to a few but haven't had a lot of luck. But there's always the next one!
Wow, that was harsh! I guess he's dead.
Or is he!? ...yes, very likely.
Yea, I think the electric chair will do that Lol!
I was wondering if they were killing him or giving him shock therapy.
Nnooooooo
mopping a wooden floor
I am HURT
I think if it only made to shock the viewer it is not justified. When using such a sensitive content there has to be a saying about the situation, otherwise it is just abusing the sensitive topic for amusement and production needs.
It is a little bit to shock the viewer, but it's also to give the audience a false sense of security. The amusement is the point of the film, it's meant to make you feel uncomfortable whilst watching.
First
You win!
What a good premise and what a disaster ending. Trying too hard to be edgy? It was almost a non sequitur. If the outcome was what it was it wasn’t explained adequately. I would have done a more lighthearted and sweet ending. Could be just as touching but actually fit with the rest of the film. C-.
I appreciate the feedback. We knew from the get-go that the ending would be quite divisive, and have this question of taste/lack of, depending on who is watching. What were you hoping the ending would be? Be cool to know how you would have ended it.
You could keep your present ending and make the character a prisoner rather than a patient. It’s the mismatch in your story that’s the issue not the ending. In novel writing we talk of the “promise of the novel” and when you switched from one story to another with no reason or continuity it violated this “promise of the short film”. There are a number of ways you could have fixed this. Even a sign that used the phrase “blah blah blah center for the criminally insane” would have worked, or some back story to connect why he’s getting executed while protecting the character so we still like him. The way this was done frankensteins two story lines without and tendons or enough connective tissue to make it reasonable. Read all your comments. When folks are talking about your ending you’re getting things like “well that escalated quickly” and “well that was sudden”. This is because there’s inadequate continuity.
@@walcuppernell2931 Aye that makes a lot of sense. It's almost like we have these 2 stories which don't line up enough. Thanks for the feedback Wal
Great production values. Story is not my cup of tea.
