  • In this episode, I interview Jade Connelly-Duggan, acupuncturist, organizational leadership coach, and owner of Humaning Well. Jade's leadership work is centered on sensory awareness and trusting the wisdom of the body. She is a second generation holistic health practitioner and grew up in a family that cultivated a deep self-awareness in her at a young age.
Jade has done a few online Enneagram tests and has consistently come up with two results: Enneagram 8 (The Challenger) and Enneagram 4 (The Individualist). She's a great example of how online tests can be tricky and how exploring type with a coach or spiritual director can be helpful to hone in on some details. If you know the Enneagram, 4s and 8s very different types as one is in the Body Center (8) and the other is in the Heart Center(4). Yet in some ways they can look alike. When someone has done a lot of inner work and is as self-aware as Jade is, there can some wrestling with the questions. You will see that in this episode. When this happens, it's helpful to try to answer questions from your 21 year old (and usually less self-aware) self.
While this episode is not a formal typing session, we explored the nuances of Enneagram 8 and Enneagram 4, their lower and higher expressions, their wings, and their lines. We dialed in some of the details and I am pretty sure Jade is either a 4w3 or an 8w7. If I had to pick one, I'd lean toward the 4w3.
At 1:04 I referenced subtypes and couldn't find what I was looking for to share in the episode. I found the reference later on and am sharing it here. The reference is from Beatrice Chestnut's book, The Complete Enneagram (page 286): "This four tends to be a humanitarian with an empathetic and nurturing disposition, someone who protests for the sake of others and is sensitive to the needy, the dispossessed, and victims of injustice.... They try to take care of others' pain or work to ease the 'suffering of the world' so they don't have to fully deal with their own suffering." This 4's desire to do the work of social justice can look like an 8, but their motivation is coming from the Heart Center and not the Body center, and so looking at Type 4 for Jade is a worthwhile exploration.
Here's what's important to remember as you watch: at the end of the day, typing is not about what I think the person's type is. It's about what resonates for the person. Unlike tests like Meyers-Briggs, the Enneagram is deeply personal, nuanced, and ultimately sacred. Your Enneagram type is said to be one of the 9 faces of the Divine. No one can tell you which face of God you bring forth, except you. We can offer suggestions and guidance, but ultimately landing on your type is an inside job.
Sometimes people mistype themselves and we also discussed that in this episode. Mistyping yourself is never time wasted. Experiencing life through a type other than yours offers you a glimpse into one of the 9 expressions of Divinity. I promise you, someday that glimpse will help you when you meet someone who leads with that other type you thought you were. You will have understanding and compassion about that person that will matter in your relationship.
