    We received a project to repair off an Aluminum competition mountain bike. There were significant cracks in the swing arm that needed to be diagnosed and welded. Since this is an old bike frame (about 12 years old), there was no available information about the parent material. We decided that it was likely a 6000 series Aluminum and would be best repaired with a 5356 Aluminum filler.
    Before welding, we first needed to remove all the paint / primer and groove out the cracks.

    Does 6000 aluminium bike frames need to be heat treated after been welded, as apparently they are 40% weaker afterweld. Also they need to be realigned after treatment

    Nice video. I may have to revisit this once I have a proper shop with a TIG welder; my dad has a old Specialized M2 road frame that's got a nasty crack in it... it's an old fatigue crack from an accident a few years prior to the crack's discovery. Goes over 360 degrees in a helix, right where the shift boss got knocked off in the wreck (we had since drilled it out to fit a Cannondale boss set).
    What's interesting (and perhaps problematic) is that M2 stands for metal matrix; it's some sort of quasi-exotic aluminum alloy that Specialized had developed at the time. What it is I do not not know but it likely isn't a standard alloy (or wasn't at the time). Wouldn't be the first time a bike company did that either, as the guy who founded Klien bikes added boron (IIRC) to the mix as a stiffness enhancement on existing large-tube aluminum bike frame technology (which was originally developed by cannondale).

    I got myself in a bit of trouble last time I cleaned my weld area with solvent while wearing my leather weld gloves. As soon as I struck an arc the fumes in my gloves lit on fire. It took me a minute to realize the excessive heat wasn't from the torch but from my hands on fire haha no injury but I will use bare hands to apply solvent to the weld area, skin doesn't absorb fumes like my tig gloves.

    As a welder who rides an aluminum frame bike, i know a little about the production process for what you have there. Basically, it's gonna be 6061 that is turned into T6 after the fabricatrion steps. In other words heat treatments to attain the far far stronger temper throughout the frame. And they go to all that trouble because just welding it won't hold up. I hope that the piece welded here is going back to the manufacturer to run through their heat treat processes again.

    Want to get larger tires on the rear wheel and don't have much clearance on the bottom
    I know it's aluminum, it's painted and in good condition without any scratches. How big of a job would it be to get an eighth of an inch or 1/4 of an inch more clearance for the rear wheel
    Can that be sanded down? Or some divots put in where the tire comes closest to the metal? Will that weaken the frame? What a bike shop be able to do that or would I have to call a specialist? Thanks if anyone can help

    • @Welddotcom
      @Welddotcom  Před 8 lety +6

      I sometimes use stop drilling techniques when welding thicker materials. This helps avoid additional crack propagation. However, This particular part was fairly thin aluminum and cracks were easily identified. My starts always occur in parent material before the crack and add filler. The same applies for the weld terminations... I always weld past the crack and into clean parent material. As always, add a little extra filler at the end of the weld termination to avoid hot short cracking.
