I loved the first game a lot, it felt like a very unique and special experience to me. I also experienced some psychological problems some years ago, so it was relatable as well to me to some degree.
Either way, thanks for the review! I love the positive light you presented it in. I look forward to playing it myself one day.
A few tips for those ready to face this stormy psychological adventure: Use headphones, disable subtitles, take your time with the game, and take regular breaks. I'd also add: be aware of your own mental and emotional state before diving in. It's a unique gaming experience, but come prepared!
I unfortunately didn't use headphones and used subtitles (sometimes I just can't identify the things the voices are saying), but I still had a great time!
Very much looking forward to playing this. Loved the first one and seems to be more of that but better
This is the most positive review of Hellblade 2, barely any negative / critics even
I can only share my own experience with it!
I didn’t finish the first game, but I’m 4 hours into this sequel and it’s already much better than the first. The graphics are some of the best I’ve ever seen, and the simplistic gameplay makes it easy to get into. I’m impressed with this game. 10/10
Already out? Nice. Thinking about playing the first one before this one 🤔
it's been out today and they already finished the game like damn.
@yonico_ I finished the game over the weekend. Been playing it since Thursday
You absolutely should! It's a unique, wild ride. It's worth playing before diving into the sequel. It's also just €2.99 on Humble, so no excuse.
Yeah, they recently published a 20 minute video which describes what they are attempting to to achieve with it in that it is attempting to show you the dual reality of people living with psychosis experience in their interactions with normal people in how different it can make her see things.

As much as I've tried giving Ninja Theory's games a fair shake, I don't think Hellblade is for me. Not because of the subject matter, but the gameplay.
Despite the first game being considered double-A, it contained everything I dislike about western triple-A games, from unskippable walking sections in place of full player agency and more engaging gameplay, to a zoomed-in over-the-shoulder perspective ill-fitting a melee combat game (though at least here, it's usually one-on-one fights). While I did enjoy the atmosphere, visuals, audio effects that emulate psychosis, and some puzzles for the most part, it wasn't enough to make up for the issues I had with the gameplay. I just don't see myself enjoying its sequel much more if I already didn't like the first game.
I don't think narrative-driven games need to railroad players with design tropes that hurt their replay value, because I've played plenty of indie games that tell the kinds of stories only a game could, and make the best use of the medium possible. When playing these kinds of games, I always ask myself "What do I get from playing this, that I can't already get from just watching a full playthrough on CZcams?", and if the gameplay isn't enjoyable at all to me, the answer is usually nothing but tedium.
Of all the Ninja Theory games I've played, the only one I've genuinely enjoyed so far is Heavenly Sword, and even that comes with caveats, like a sluggish framerate and the spectacle coming at the cost of combat depth. DmC has the better combat of the bunch, but only because it's borrowing from Devil May Cry, and even then its combat pales in comparison to the majority of games in that franchise due to serious design oversights. There's a lot wrong with that reboot, but I don't blame Ninja Theory for that incident, as Capcom were the ones calling the shots at the end of the day.
I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade with this, I'm sure plenty of people will still enjoy Hellblade II regardless. As for myself, I've resigned myself to the fact that Ninja Theory don't share my values when it comes to game design, despite their being some superficial overlap between the games I enjoy and theirs.
It's free on gamepass by the way.
It's not free though 😭😭 it's on gamepass is a better phrasing for what you get
It’s not free. U have to pay for game pass
not free, gamepass costs money
