Might sound weird, but I'm glad I didn't discover this song when it first came out in May 2015. At that time I had just broken off my first relationship. Man, I loved that girl. But she was toxic to the core. It took courage, pain, and time to turn away from her. Several times I thought I "needed her there, as desperate as that sounds." But I didn't. I learned how to breathe without her and I'm better for it. She never changed but I did. My wife is magnitudes better than she ever was. I love Jon Bellion and this song, but I'm glad I discovered it well after those scars had healed and the embers died.

i think the part that says "we live in an age where everything is staged and all we do is fake our feelings I'm so scared to put myself so out there" is so true on so many levels. i'm a victim of sexual assault. i was 4 years old when I was molested by a girl that was babysitting for me. at times I hate faking my feelings and hiding my story because of something that wasn't my fault. although my family has supported me unconditionally from the start and my close friends support me too I want to share my story in a public way to bring awareness to sexual assault and give voices to the ones that can't find their own. but I'm afraid to put myself out there because I'm terrified that people will look at me the way I look at myself and see me nothing more than a victim. however if I allow my story to be unheard someone else will have an unheard story as well. victims deserve to know that it wasn't their fault, that they're good enough, worthy, and can rise above the adversity that a horrible and evil human being put them through.
