Netflix has thousands of videos to choose from for a night (or day) of marathon watching. The problem is: how do you pick what to watch? It can be daunting searching through various titles, so much so that you may end up skipping to watch anything altogether. Netflix tries to make it easier to pick titles through personalization of their site-including the thumbnails you’ll see for every piece of content in their catalog.
With thousands of videos to choose from, and more than 130 million subscriber in 190 countries, there’s a lot of potential to create some eye-catching thumbnails according to users’ tastes. So the company uses a set of algorithms to determine what images you’re more likely to click on. It’s just one streaming service on the frontier of personalizing how content is served to its viewers. Netflix’s goal is to get you engaged with their content for as long as possible. And ever changing customizable thumbnails is just one of their methods.

Sometimes when I go on Netflix I’m like “Oh they changed the thumbnail” of a series I’m watching. Could this be that I’m watching a lot of different shows of different genres?

That's because anytime you hear someone talking about a "company using AI", what they *actually* mean is a "company pretending to use AI to push you into a bias of whatever makes them the most money". Anyone who thinks a company's AI is "curating for you" is HOPELESSLY naive.

@@JamesR624 They are using artificial intelligence and yes, they're using it to push their original content. When Disney launches their streaming service and pulls all of their own and Fox's content, Netflix has to stand on its own against the big guys. Netflix has created a mass library of content and it's curating it's organisation, along with its thumbnails, descriptions and other promotional material to each viewer.

@@skeletonizer9529 Actually, I watch more Netflix originals than anything else. They have some awesome shows, and, quite honestly, a lot of the non-Netflix stuff just isn't worth watching. What's being produced for TV is largely smutty and uninteresting with lots of gritty violence and bad langauge. No thanks! That said, Netflix produces some nasty stuff, too, but at least there is some decent content. As for old movies and shows, I have most of the ones I like on DVD and am in the process of digitizing those DVDs and loading them on a drive connected to my Roku. I don't need them to be on Netflix to be able to watch them. Honestly, the reason I keep Netflix is their original series.
That said, of *course* Netflix will push their content, and I often get ads for new shows I would NEVER watch. Is it annoying? You bet it is. I really wish there was a "hide this show" button to make shows I detest leave my feed.

The weirdest thing my Netflix has ever done is what it did to the Shrek thumbnails. I was just searching for Shrek two, like you do, and I realized that all of my Shrek thumbnails were weirdly.... sexual......? The thumbnail for Shrek was from the scene when Farquaad is in bed looking at the princesses on the magic mirror. The specific frame is him, holding up his drink, his shirt off with the covers over him which makes him look naked, with his eyes half closed and smirking, which is a seduction face if I ever saw one. The thumbnail for Shrek Two was from the beginning of the movie when Shrek and Fiona are on their honeymoon and they’re on the beach. The frame is them in their swimsuits, staring lovingly into each other’s eyes. This one was the most romantic of the weirdly sexual Shrek covers. Finally, Shrek the Third was of a scene where Donkey wakes Shrek up at night. The frame shows Donkey at Shrek’s bedside, smiling at Shrek who is shirtless, again with the covers on him which makes him look naked.
I don’t know what this says about me but it gave me a good laugh

There are companies which have failed just because they couldn't crack the UX. Also, many of the UX designers double as front-end developers. And being a woman is an advantage in the UX world. Women have the ability to empathize and understand the users much better than the men. And trust me, being a man, I know this first hand through both my personal and professional experiences. Programmer here!
Movie posters are designed to have vertical emphasis, whereas Netflix thumbnails need a variety of aspect ratios (most often more square shaped). This means you would either have to stretch the original and distort it, or cut it. There's too much variation in movie poster design to reliably cut them in huge batches without doing a lot of work. They'd have to cut them down manually, OR more likely, develop programs to analyze and do the job instead.
Remember captcha tests online (silly tests to verify you're a human)? A huge reason they work is we naturally understand how to read words baked into flat images. It's too complex to be automated. Any automation to trim the original posters would need to recognize written language so as to not cut the title off, or cut it in half. It would ALSO need to be associated with the film itself. Without reliably picking up words in the title on the original posters, this would also need to be done by hand.
By making their own title cards, they have a built in association with the source film, the ability to automate selection of screenshots based off large tests they can continuously improve, they can apply this approach to automatically generating title cards of different dimensions by making modest changes to their existing code, and they can create logical sets of title cards so their interface is visually and logically cohesive.

And yet it's not, so maybe you need to fine-tune your ad sponsor detector...or pay attention to the actual content.

@@cityuser Even if it was, I've seen many sponsored content that was actually quite good. Game Theory does quite a bit, but I think it's because most of their partners are hands off (I can't believe I just said that for Disney).

Video was too long. Halfway through it, I got hungry so I left it playing and went to the kitchen to fix my self a sandwich. But then I found out that I'm out of mayonnaise so I went to a store. There, I saw the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my whole life. But I'm really a shy person so I took up a three-year personality development course so I can introduce my self. She was very friendly and all, but unfortunately, she has a boyfriend. So I said, all good, I'm a mature person. I want the best for her and I harbor no illusion that I am the best person for her and she seems happy with her boyfriend, so I did not bother her anymore. But we kept in touch and we became friends and I got over my crush on her. Then she broke up with her boyfriend, we drank some alcohol because of it, I told her she'll be fine and I wished her well. I still think she's the most beautiful woman in the world, but like I said, I am over my crush on her. It was like five years already when I first saw her. Besides, I am quiet happy with the friendship I developed with her. It was more important than a crush. So we kept hanging out, drinking, having coffee, and all. I had a girlfriend, she started dating other guys. My girlfriend wants to live some other life without me in it, so I said, okay, I want the best for you and I want you to pursue your happiness. My lady friend and I drank alcohol about it, and she gave me the same advice I gave her when she was in that position and I became okay with the breakup immediately. But we were really drunk, so she spent the night in my apartment. I only have one bed, so you know what that means: She took the bed and I slept on the couch. But on the couch, I really can't sleep. Something was bothering me. So I tossed and turned for about three hours, then I finally can't take it anymore, I stood up and went straight to my room where she's sleeping. I approached the bed, gently sat on it and I reached for her shoulder to pull her closer to me. She stirred and woke up. She asked what's up. I told her, you know, the first time I saw you, I was watching a video and left it playing to get my self a sandwich then went to the store to get some mayo then I got distracted by life that I forgot to finish the video. She said, you know what, I've been wondering about a weird noise in your night drawer. So we opened that drawer, and lo and behold, there's my phone and this video still has two minutes of play time on it.

There is a Netflix Original show someone recommended to me that I had never heard of. I searched it up and it said I had a 44% match rating. I added it to my list. Now it's splashed all over my front page when it was previously no where to be seen and has an 94% match rating.
