If it’s not one of these 3, what’s your go to Tarpon reel? And, do you fish bait, artificials, or both?
Awesome vid only thing is you said the slammer holds 340yds of 40lb but thats the specs for the 5500 reel.... their 6500 slammer holds 410 of 40lb
I'm a new subscriber i really like your channel
I have the saltist mq 5k and love it because it's really versatile
Just got a saragosa 8k paired on Kong rod medium heavy 8ft rod and it’s amazing.
I have a Saltist mq 4k and I love it. It’s hard to beat how smooth it is
Yea man the 8k feels great too! Definitely smoother than the Saragosa and Slammer
wait a year and it won't be so smooth
I own all three of these reels and the slammer isn’t even in the same ball park as the other two. I burned through it in half a season while the other two are still just as good as they were and have been fished harder
Doesn't the Saltist have a magnesium alloy for the gears?
I used my Slammer DX 6500 for both bait and lure application. But need a 13' rod for bait and a 10' for lure.
In South Africa the Daiwa Saltist and Shimano Saragosa reels are use to target and catch sharks from the shore. Thats why we pioneered the short butt surf casting spinning rods. We also pioneered the non return slide, dingle dangle, latex bait cotton etc etc etc.
Saragossa 8000-10000 best reel IMO
❤
I use a Shimano Baitrunner 6kD. Did I mess up?
Those baitrunners are legends, surprise they havent updated that reel. Saragosa, twinpowers . Daiwa Certate
What reel is good for surf fishing? Usually use cut bait for anything that will bite
The best would be a van staal VR or X2. Some other good alternatives would be a Saragosa or a BG MQ for a more budget friendly option
Well here in southern california all you need is 2500- 3000 size reel ML - M rod really. But it comes down to preference
What would u take for casting over and over inshore all day a disease saltiest 3000 or a Saragosa 5000
Inshore would definitely go with the 3000 size not a 5000
I’ve gotta 5k gosa on a med heavy fenwick elite inshore 7’6 usually use for snook around heavy structure and a 10k gosa on a 7’2 heavy terez. Which would be better suited for tarpon?
If you’re casting lighter baits pretty far, like on the beach, and they’re not very big fish, then the 5k will work, but it’s definitely light. The 10k and terez would be better, but I like longer rods for tarpon. They tend to keep the fish on better and help you cast further.
@@tailwateroutfitters gotcha, thank you!
Can’t decide between slammer and saragosa
Is the Penn 6500 equivalent to the Gosa and Saltist in size?
Yes. Penns run big, so just pay attention to line capacity and weight of the reel when comparing to others.
FFP Resolute 6K with a Bull Bay Tarpon Brute Force.
So many branded reels, in my whole life ill never been got or used that somekined of a thing. Ive got 2 set ups here but only a chepiest set ups made from china. I love fishing and more power to yuo and godbless....
Saragosa
Can a 6000 saragosa handle 20-80 pound tarpon and drum I live in sc , Im trying to go light as I can.
Yea absolutely, the 6k should work great for that!
@@tailwateroutfittersdo you think I can go any lighter? Im using artificial lures like NLBN and bigger topwaters too

Ive caught a 35 pound king mackerel and a 25 pound tarpon on my Saragossa 6000 not the gen that just came out but the one before with 22 pounds of drag .. It made it look easy with a strong rod it’s impressive what you can do with little drag !
I have a 6K Gosa. I hooked a 250lb (approx) stingray from the beach chasing redfish down in the OBX. He was screaming drag so hard I almost snapped my finger trying to slow it down. Cranked it down to probably 95% drag and stopped him with maybe 30 yards of line left on the spool. Was using 50lb braid FWIW. Took me over an hour to get him on the beach but that reel performed flawlessly. I've now bought 4 more Gosas in various sizes. Absolutely worth it for the money
is the saltist mq much better then just the plain saltist? about a $100 price diff
The biggest difference is the weight. The saltist feels heavy like a bg
Can i get away with a saltist 5000?
Conventional or fly gear for me….. have never like spinning reels… otherwise known as an upside down egg beater…. Too many moving parts like the bale…. that spins ….WTF do you actually need a one for …???? The bale-less spinner makes sense… maybe… but not so much …!
I’m guessing spin gear users just can’t cast a conventional reel…
I’ve never seen spin gear on a tuna party boat…… the reason being is …. Spin gear is too slow and not enough power for tuna and everyone will be waiting for you and they will be PISSED OFF AT YOU …. Don’t be that guy…!

As long as your attitude impresses at least yourself....I'm sure the mirror just gushes praise that nobody else can give you
Beginners gotta start somewhere.... unfortunately a lot of fishers stay in that beginner mode. Fly Fishing gang 💪
Saragosa
That’s what id pick for bait or artificial too
