Tesla is a first-mover in the EV industry. However, many analysts are uncertain whether this is sufficient in the long run. In order to become the most compelling car company of the 21st century, Tesla will have to come up with a source of sustainable competitive advantage. In this video, we will discuss several of the companies strenghts, as well as what makes it so very similar to Apple, and why we believe that Tesla has high chances in repeating Apple's success from several years ago. One big difference between the two companies is that Tesla has a clear and public road map for several years of new products; 35k version of Model3, Solar roof, ModelY, Semitruck, Roadster, Pickup, $20k sedan, etc. Apple used to manage a ground breaking product; ipod, iphone, ipad every so often but it was never clear what their next big product was going to be until it was announced. Another difference is in the cost of their products; Apple primarily makes $1k products, Tesla primarily makes $50k. Another difference is that TSLA makes their own products and desires vertical integration; Apple farms out the majority of their production. What all this will mean is hard to say, though I think TSLA has the possible potential to become much larger than AAPL.

      Hi David! Very interesting observations!
Do you think that a clear roadmap is more dangerous (shows competitors what you will do next) or is a beneficial technique (gives loyal brand followers something to wait for) ? It shows strength and confidence from Tesla, doesn't it?

    • @dksculpture

@@365FinancialAnalyst Thanks. I think the TSLA roadmap is a good sign as long as they can execute in the relative near term. I also believe that Musk and TSLA have many other product ideas that have not yet been discussed publicly, including batteries that are significantly better than what they currently make (which are already ahead of the competition). I'm very bullish on TSLA at present.

As a shareholder, Tesla solar roof owner, and a Tesla Model 3 owner, I gave my all for Tesla to be successful. The company's mission, which is to accelerate the advent of sustainable transportation and energy has been semi-completed. With companies, such as GM and Ford focusing on electric zero emission vehicles going forward, the Tesla effect has already taken place. The world cannot afford the dangerous experiment of continuously dumping CO2 into the atmosphere as pointed out by the most recent climate change report. Unfortunately, the survival of Tesla will never be secured due to the constant negative narrative being pushed by the media since fossil fuel and legacy car manufactures rule the world. I wish them luck and god speed.

6:22 Supporters don't just become customers, we become shareholders as well.
I suspect one of the reasons Tesla survived all the Short Seller antics was that it had an unusual number of shareholders who believed in the company rather than just financial investment firms who want a short term ROI. When Tesla's stock price gets brought low, supporters of the company flood in to buy stocks stabilizing the price.
This gives Musk the freedom to take risks that most CEO's would dream of.

I don’t think Apple has superior products. The technology is often years old and the specs aren’t better, especially for the ridiculous amounts of money charged. What Apple has is a superior brand, with many iOS users not even considering the alternative, often knowing very little about it.
As for Tesla, they have both the best brand and the best products, something Apple used to have but doesn’t any more imo. For as long as Elon is steering the ship, I don’t think there will be a good ‘Android of the Auto world’.

Hi Loui! Awesome comment! And in fact ... the comparison we made here is between Apple from 10 years (and may be 15 years) ago and Tesla today. There are so many similarities. The first few versions of the Iphone were by far the best product alternative on the market. You are right - Samsung were fast to catch up - but initial leadership gave Apple the edge, as they were able to acquire a significant amount of users and make them part of their integrated ecosystem. Switching costs are very high once you enter such a system. In all likelihood, Tesla will apply a very similar strategy.

Yeah... I have to disagree with this one...
They do have similarities, but they are VERY different.
First of all, Tesla's plan isn't to become a huge brand with great products, its plan is to make every mainstream car on the road EV, whether it be a Tesla, Volvo or Volkswagen. Apple would NEVER let that fly.
Tesla open sources their patents, Apple patents the shit out of their tech and only uses it as selling points.
Elon is an entrepreneur, as in not just a founder of (several) companies. All he wants is for the world to be better (sounds corny, but you really can't say otherwise) while Steve's biggest influence was to make a successful company.
The LAST thing you would do if you were out for money would be to sell your first revolutionary company, found a private rocket company (while the best thing flying was a several-billion dollar space plane that was bleeding off of welfare), then put all your money into both a dying EV company AND a rocket company that had yet to have a successful launch.

Samsung outsells Apple in the cellphone market by a wide margin, mainly because Samsung offers a complete line from stylish feature rich high end models to basic useful bargain models. Apple does have a higher profit margin, due to charging premium prices higher than other equivalent models, and having no bargain or mid-range models.
That illustrates one significant difference between Apple and Tesla - while Apple is exclusively expensive high end tech equipment, with no attempt to go "down market", Tesla started with high end to get established and profitable, but is working hard to develop lower cost options to expand their customer base.

Releasing the Tesla patents was absolutely inspired, in order for governments and companies around the world to role out charging facilities and more resilient smart-grids, there had to be significant demand; Tesla needs competitors in order to make a dent in the fossil fuel system we all currently inhabit. Releasing these patents was likely not too painful for Tesla because they were already benefiting from them, being the first-movers, and they would have learned to apply them in the real world, it cements Tesla's sincerity in achieving it's vision of transitioning the world towards electric vehicles, and signals to customers that Tesla is not just focused on profits for themselves. Musk was quoted as saying (paraphrase) 'if we are all in a sinking boat and Tesla has a design for a bucket to bail out the water, it is common sense to share that design'.

As a follower of both companies, and an investor in both, I'd have to qualify the similarities this way:
Apple was well established as a boutique brand for more than 20 years before entering the smartphone market (or should I say, inventing it). They were very profitable, where Tesla has never been profitable. Tesla also has no track record in being a mass market leader, which they're now trying to accomplish.
It should be obvious by now that Tesla will most likely not survive on its own, but will have to merge with a larger car company or be acquired somehow, in order to have the R&D depth going forward. The capital costs just don't favour a small company such as Tesla. It's a very different market from computers, as they've discovered.
I like to say that the difference between Apple and Tesla is that, when Steve Jobs got up at MacWorld and announced a product, there were lineups of customers who bought it right away. Elon Musk lacks the capability to satisfy customers as he announces new products. This is a fundamental difference, and a big problem, for Tesla.
    Cheers all.

Another economic advantage of Tesla's which is largely overlooked. It's their intention to solar power all their facilities including their almost global supercharger network. All with technology they produce along with appropriate storage. Once the infrastructure is installed the entire system will operate on free energy. Quite hard to compete with. They are predicting 7c/kwh on their network as they phase out free supercharging. A ridiculously low price for consumers and a healthy markup on free.

Nobody is talking about perpetual motion or lack of depreciation or need for maintenance. Fossil fuel and nuclear infrastructure also has all of that along with constantly having to pay to access the energy which the consumer pays for. Renewables need far less maintenance and do not have that ongoing payment to access the energy. The energy is free not the maintenance or depreciation, although they are greatly diminished and yes, the consumer pays for that too. Ultimately less than they used to.

    • @AWildBard
      @AWildBard Před 5 lety

This is a good point, but to make superchargers rely on renewable energy will require a massive build-up of solar and wind power + battery storage somewhere along the line. Tesla has been doing a great job of building the supercharger network, but I doubt if any of them run on renewable power unless the grid already runs on renewable power. To charge one car probably requires at least 5-10 solar panels working all day long. But if you have 10 chargers, that is potentially 100 to 150 cars per day, or more. So one charging station might need the equivalent of maybe 1,000 solar panels to run independent of grid power- if it was always busy.

Kevin Vidakovic Apple’s sales are on the decline and the only way for them to keep growing is to pump up the prices even further, when they were high for people to begin with, so that strategy risks alienating their fanbase and any other potential customers and keep them from upgrading their phones making them get even less sales in the long run, if they get half the sales in 5 years time they will have to start selling $2000 phones just to maintain a 0% rate of growth and since you can only raise up prices so much they will make less money than before in the long run.
Their stock has dumped like a rock and I’m skeptical like many analysts are that they can introduce another breakthrough product to keep growth going, the Apple Watch was a product that brought something new to the market, but it wasn’t the Hail Mary that saved them from stagnation, stagnant companies are ripe for market disruption and Apple’s days are counted without the man that made it into what it is today, they can no longer disrupt new markets, they’re too big to take risks and experiment with new products without a disruptive man at the helm like Steve Jobs was.

As it stands, Tesla sold about 50% of what Renault-Nissan did in 2017, and this doesn't include all the Chinese manufacturing coming online, nor Volkswagen AG, which is switching to all EV in the near future. Volkswagen, which owns Audi, Porsche etc, produces over 10 million cars per year. That's almost 30,000 daily.
