the Gladius is a simple type of sword that will be practical for various different context beyond the Roman military setting that it was originally used in

Technically a machete is a sword. It just happens to be a sword that is also a tool. If one looks to early machete they are the same as swords called hanger/messer. Yes many modern machete are a bit thinner but thats b/c we can make them thinner without them breaking. Whereas before this was much harder to achieve.

I use the gladius for gardening, it's very effective but being double edged requires care unless you want to open your forehead!

The shield you have in the background, I have the same one. But how realistic is it actually to have a straps on that kind of shield, instead of holding it in the middle ? or is it just fantasy design ?

Hi Kenneth, you have a sharp eye, Buddy :-) yes, you are right, I also quess this shield is more fantasy design. - Actually, it is quite sturdy and solid, thats why i got it: it has got a metal ring around it (historically correct would be leather), and on the back it has got one leather strap and one metal/wooden grip. This is not correct Viking desing ... but it actually handles very well. - Maybe sometime i will make a DIY large Viking shield... Cheers, Erik

Cold steel says it is a "machete" but it is a sword ! If you study history and words, you will discover that a sword is a double edged blade that is made for fighting / war. A sabre / saber is a "big knife" just like a machete is. In other words, if it has two edges it is a sword, if not it is a machete in this case.

Dear Shinobi Hiriyu, thank you for your comment, i appreciate your thoughts. True, the Gladius is double edged.. The reason why i think it is correct still to speak of a machete (well, a double-edged machete..) is due to itssimple construction.simply flat Piece of steel, the Profile is not sword-typical with a thicker central part or a fuller, and the edges are not differentially heat treated, as far as i know... so the Features arequite machete-like. - but i get your Point. And i like the Gladius a lot! Cheers Erik
