  • In this video Forrest the founder of Different Media shows you how to remove a broken 3-way dometic fridge from a Motorhome, and how to replace it with a efficient 12 volt Compressor Fridge instead. Forrest is restoring and renovating his 1989 Toyota Motorhome and only the propane function of his 3 way fridge worked so he decided to give it away and replace it with a 12 volt compressor cooler. Compressors are the same technology that are used in our refrigerators in houses, but the 12 volt versions have a modified compressor to work at lower voltage and lower amperage, which suits RV and Van life. The Chilly moose 52L fridge is a perfect example of a efficient option to keep your food cold, it uses only 60 watts when it is on, and once it reaches temperature it turns off and waits to heat back up again until turning on and consuming more of your battery. Forrest also builds a slide out tray for the fridge to sit on because it is a top loading type model and he shows you how to do that in this video. If you found this video useful at all, make sure to check out our sponsors as it was only made possible by them, They make all sorts of cool outdoor equipment!

Long story short my old RV had a residential fridge and it was awesome. Ran fine on a inverter with a AGM battery. I ended up selling the RV and bought a slide in camper. Has a 2 way fridge and I live in Arizona, so you can imagine the disaster this fridge is. It is a small fridge so I have been contemplating doing this very thing. I didn't think I would find a video, but low and behold you had one, so great job ! I am not sure how I am going to make it work yet in my situation. I still need to take some measurements, but I definitely want it to look like it was on purpose. Thanks for the the inspiration, and for my thought validation.

Hi Forrest, thank you for your very informative video. After watching we were also inspired to remove the old dometic fridge from our Scamp and replace it with a 12 volt compressor cooler. We have successfully removed the fridge and are trying to figure out the best way to finish the new space. Can you offer any advice on how you finished the space that the old fridge occupied? Thanks for any information that you can provide.

Hey Laurie, glad you enjoyed the video. Funny enough I was actually looking at space today and thinking about what I'm going to do to finish it, we left it how it was finished this video because we didn't have enough time to do anything really with it before moving in, and then I just never got around to doing anything because it worked as is. I plan to do something with it but not sure yet, I'll post videos on my Forrest Stevens youtube channel when I do. Also if you wanted to join my discord and share what you end up doing it's linked in the Description

What did you use to seal off your new hole from where the fridge came out? I’m having same issue now. Took out fridge and m building a shelf there now but massive opening to the great outdoors 😳…

The "12 volt" stuff that you identified is actually the 110V (or 240V) power. The "exhaust" is both an exhaust AND contains the 12v/110or240v heating elements. You should have called out that the gas lines should be cleared before disconnecting the gas lines. Very dangerous to not include this information.

AMM013 . . . I second that ! I nearly suffocated removing a rv fridge that was supposed to have been decommissioned and wasn’t !
